Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive, yet clearly presented, account of statistical methods for analysing spherical data. The analysis of data, in the form of directions in space or of positions of points on a spherical surface, is required in many contexts in the earth sciences, astrophysics and other fields, yet the methodology required is disseminated throughout the literature. Statistical Analysis of Spherical Data aims to present a unified and up-to-date account of these methods for practical use. The emphasis is on applications rather than theory, with the statistical methods being illustrated throughout the book by data examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics for Engineers focuses on the concepts of probability theory and mathematical statistics for finite-dimensional random variables. The book underscores the probabilities of events, random variables, and numerical characteristics of random variables. Discussions focus on canonical expansions of random vectors, second-order moments of random vectors, generalization of the density concept, entropy of a distribution, direct evaluation of probabilities, and conditional probabilities. The text then examines projections of random vectors and their distributions, including conditional distributions of projections of a random vector, conditional numerical characteristics, and information contained in random variables. The book elaborates on the functions of random variables and estimation of parameters of distributions. Topics include frequency as a probability estimate, estimation of statistical characteristics, estimation of the expectation and covariance matrix of a random vector, and testing the hypotheses on the parameters of distributions. The text then takes a look at estimator theory and estimation of distributions. The book is a vital source of data for students, engineers, postgraduates of applied mathematics, and other institutes of higher technical education.

Book excerpt: Probability and statistics are as much about intuition and problem solving as they are about theorem proving. Consequently, students can find it very difficult to make a successful transition from lectures to examinations to practice because the problems involved can vary so much in nature. Since the subject is critical in so many applications from insurance to telecommunications to bioinformatics, the authors have collected more than 200 worked examples and examination questions with complete solutions to help students develop a deep understanding of the subject rather than a superficial knowledge of sophisticated theories. With amusing stories and historical asides sprinkled throughout, this enjoyable book will leave students better equipped to solve problems in practice and under exam conditions.

Book excerpt: Regression anlysis provides students with the skills and techniques necessary for the intelligent statistical analysis of a response variable. This work shows that there is a defined structure underlying the analysis and explains the rationale behind the methods presented. Due to the increased availability, power and user-friendliness of computers, the more useful, and therefore the more complex statistical analyses are now performed with software rather than by applying formulas. This book, therefore, focuses on the underlying statistical concepts and de-emphasizes the use of formulas. It incorporates real data from SAS, a popular package at this level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978. For the non-mathematician, however, even the simpler introductory books on statistics often raise considerable problems. In this second edition First, some attention has been given to the problem of the transformation of data in order to reinforce the appreciation of the need for normally-distributed data for the use of so many techniques. Secondly, the use of probability paper, at least in simple terms, has been introduced to illustrate the ways in which the labour of probability assessments can be circumvented. Thirdly, radical changes have been made, plus considerable expansion added, to the theme of non-parametric testing, to provide a more systematic approach to what is a most important group of possible techniques for geographers. Fourthly, change and expansion are also reflected in the sections on correlation and regression, including some simple consideration of curvilinear relationships and the presentation of computational techniques more geared to the use of desk calculators rather than long-hand methods. Finally, the bibliography has also been expanded, to incorporate a wider range of books on techniques and a selection of research papers using such techniques in a geographical (or near-geographical) context.

Book excerpt: One of the most popular introductory texts in its field, Statistics for Technology: A Course in Applied Studies presents the range of statistical methods commonly used in science, social science, and engineering. The mathematics are simple and straightforward; statistical concepts are explained carefully; and real-life (rather than contrived) examples are used throughout the chapters.Divided into three parts, the Introduction describes some simple methods of summarizing data. Theory examines the basic concepts and theory of statistics. Applications covers the planning and procedures of experiments, quality control, and life testing.Revised throughout, this Third Edition places a higher priority on the role of computers in analysis, and many new references have been incorporated. A new appendix describes general methods of tackling statistical problems, including guidance on literature searching and report writing.
