Book Synopsis Calculation of Atmospheric Radiances and Brightness Temperatures by : Michael P. Weinreb
Download or read book Calculation of Atmospheric Radiances and Brightness Temperatures written by Michael P. Weinreb and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We describe a method of simulating measurements of atmospheric radiances and brightness temperatures in wide-bank window channels (at 11 and 3.7 um) of satellite radiometers. As input the simulation takes vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature and water-vapor mixing ratio, as well as the spectral response functions of the window channels. It models the atmospheric transmittances and integrates the equation of radiative transfer. We demonstrate the use of the method with applications to the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer on the TIROS-N satellite."--p.1.

Book Synopsis Atmospheric Temperature Profiles by Ground-based Infrared Spectrometer Measurements by : Jon M. Saul
Download or read book Atmospheric Temperature Profiles by Ground-based Infrared Spectrometer Measurements written by Jon M. Saul and published by . This book was released on 2000-03-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method to recover atmospheric temperature profiles using a ground- based Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer was investigated. The method used a difference form of the radiative transfer equation, a Bomem MR series Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer to collect atmospheric radiance values, and the Phillips Laboratory Expert- assisted User Software (PLEXUS) atmospheric radiance model, to recover an atmospheric temperature profile. The method researched uses radiance values from both the spectrometer measurements and the atmospheric model, along with kernel functions calculated by the atmospheric model as input to a difference form of the radiation transfer equation. From this the change in brightness temperatures was determined. The method assumes that the actual brightness temperature profile is a summation of a standard or reference brightness temperature profile plus some change in the brightness temperature. The brightness temperature profile used by the atmospheric model is the reference brightness temperature profile. Planck's Law was employed to transform the calculated brightness temperature function into a temperature function. A temperature profile was retrieved, although significant differences existed between the recovered temperature profile and a radiosonde recovered temperature profile.

In addition, the interaction among the political, technical, and legal challenges connected with the known or possible risks posed by CW agents is complex and sometimes not well understood. This is usually because technical considerations, when acted on, are almost invariably informed by political ones, such as various legal requirements. The book contains nine chapters covering different aspects of the research on environmental consequences of war and its aftermath and covers in one additional chapter more general issues such as prevention of war and its environmental c- sequences, the legal, political, and technical background to selected environmental and human health effects of CW agents, and the atmospheric transport and depo- tion of persistent organic pollutants under warfare conditions to more specific ones related to two main tragic examples: the war in the Balkans and the Gulf War. Aspects of the war in the Balkans cover contamination by heavy metals in Serbian national parks, the impact of NATO strikes on the Danube river basin, and the problems associated with transuranium elements. The Gulf War in Kuwait covers other problems related to the impact of oil contamination, the impact on grou- water resources, and the soil damage of ground fortifications among other envir- mental and health problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although remote sensing is recognized as a powerful tool, less attention has been given in the past to the use of thermal, and especially thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing. TIR data is useful for understanding the fluxes and redistribution of materials as a key aspect of land surface processes and land-atmosphere inter-relationships. This book

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Remote Sensing is an application-based reference that provides a single source of mathematical concepts necessary for remote sensing data gathering and assimilation. It presents state-of-the-art techniques for estimating land surface variables from a variety of data types, including optical sensors such as RADAR and LIDAR. Scientists in a number of different fields including geography, geology, atmospheric science, environmental science, planetary science and ecology will have access to critically-important data extraction techniques and their virtually unlimited applications. While rigorous enough for the most experienced of scientists, the techniques are well designed and integrated, making the book's content intuitive, clearly presented, and practical in its implementation.
