Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many facts were at the origin of the present monograph. The ftrst is the beauty of maple leaves in Quebec forests in Fall. It raised the question: how does nature create and reproduce such beautiful patterns? The second was the reading of A. Lindenmayer's works on L systems. Finally came the discovery of "the secrets of DNA" together with many stimulating ex changes with biologists. Looking at such facts from the viewpoint of recursive numerical systems led to devise a simple model based on six elementary operations organized in a generating word, the analog of the program of a computer and of the genetic code of DNA in the cells of a living organism. It turned out that such a model, despite its simplicity, can account for a great number of properties of living organisms, e.g. their hierarchical structure, their ability to regenerate after a trauma, the possibility of cloning, their sensitivity to mutation, their growth, decay and reproduction. The model lends itself to analysis: the knowledge of the generating word makes it possible to predict the structure of the successive developmental stages of the system; and to synthesis: a speciftc type of structure can be obtained by systematically constructing a generating word that produces it. In fact the model here proposed is coherent with the fundamental assumptions of cellular biology and in particular with recent discoveries concerning DNA, which in the light of our model behaves like a very elaborate generating word.

Book excerpt: Factorization Method for Boundary Value Problems by Invariant Embedding presents a new theory for linear elliptic boundary value problems. The authors provide a transformation of the problem in two initial value problems that are uncoupled, enabling you to solve these successively. This method appears similar to the Gauss block factorization of the matrix, obtained in finite dimension after discretization of the problem. This proposed method is comparable to the computation of optimal feedbacks for linear quadratic control problems. - Develops the invariant embedding technique for boundary value problems - Makes a link between control theory, boundary value problems and the Gauss factorization - Presents a new theory for successively solving linear elliptic boundary value problems - Includes a transformation in two initial value problems that are uncoupled

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse Problems in the Mechanics of Materials concentrates on two timely subjects: Ill-posed inverse problems related to defect identification; and the mechanics of homogeneous and heterogeneous media, including such topics as cracked bodies, solids with interfaces or inclusions, and materials rendered inhomogeneous by irreversible deformation due to their thermomechanical history. These intriguing subjects are not found together in previous publications. Written in a unique, easy-to-read format, Inverse Problems in the Mechanics of Materials provides quick access to current information. It includes up-to-date references and many recent results, particularly in such classical subjects as elasticity, plasticity, and fracture mechanics. The reader discovers numerous recipes for solving inverse problems, and reviews of available methods provide applications to real-life problems in industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the record of lectures delivered at the Conference on Mathematical System Theory during the summer of 1975. The conference was held at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences in Udine, Italy, and was supported by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Richerche of Italy and the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences. The aim of the conference was to encourage fruitful and active collaboration between researchers working in the diverse areas of system theory. It was also the hope of the organizers that mathematicians participating in the conference might become interested in the purely mathematical problems being raised by systems theory as a result of their participation. The success of the conference is to be measured by the extent to which these aims were fulfilled. Besides the formal programme of lectures recorded in this volume, many informal seminars were held. The cafes of Udine were often the scene of rich and varied discussions of recent developments in the field amongst the participants of the conference. Last but not least, listening to the ideas exposed in the lectures of others in a creative atmosphere was an important activity.
