The proposed solutions indicate that the matter has not been so fully or so clearly presented to our people as it might be; and there fore we have undertaken the task Of tracing the history of the name, and have ventured to give a meaning to this and associated names. For this purpose we present such of the modern explanations as we have access to, from Robert Dudley, 1630-47, to authorities as late as 1903. We exhibit the use Of the name in early charts and in early Span ish documents and narratives to the end of the seventeenth century.
