Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneer in the field, Christian Metz applies insights of structural linguistics to the language of film. "The semiology of film . . . can be held to date from the publication in 1964 of the famous essay by Christian Metz, 'Le cinéma: langue ou langage?'"—Geoffrey Nowell-Smith, Times Literary Supplement "Modern film theory begins with Metz."—Constance Penley, coeditor of Camera Obscura "Any consideration of semiology in relation to the particular field signifying practice of film passes inevitably through a reference to the work of Christian Metz. . . . The first book to be written in this field, [Film Language] is important not merely because of this primacy but also because of the issues it raises . . . issues that have become crucial to the contemporary argument."—Stephen Heath, Screen

Book Synopsis Screening Modernism by : András Bálint Kovács
Download or read book Screening Modernism written by András Bálint Kovács and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casting fresh light on the renowned productions of auteurs like Antonioni, Fellini, and Bresson and drawing out from the shadows a range of important but lesser-known works, Screening Modernism is the first comprehensive study of European art cinema’s postwar heyday. Spanning from the 1950s to the 1970s, András Bálint Kovács’s encyclopedic work argues that cinematic modernism was not a unified movement with a handful of styles and themes but rather a stunning range of variations on the core principles of modern art. Illustrating how the concepts of modernism and the avant-garde variously manifest themselves in film, Kovács begins by tracing the emergence of art cinema as a historical category. He then explains the main formal characteristics of modern styles and forms as well as their intellectual foundation. Finally, drawing on modernist theory and philosophy along the way, he provides an innovative history of the evolution of modern European art cinema. Exploring not only modernism’s origins but also its stylistic, thematic, and cultural avatars, Screening Modernism ultimately lays out creative new ways to think about the historical periods that comprise this golden age of film.
Book Synopsis The Soul of Film Theory by : Sarah Cooper
Download or read book The Soul of Film Theory written by Sarah Cooper and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contemporary film theory, body and mind have been central to explorations of film form, representation, and spectatorship. While the soul may seem to have no place here, the history of film theory and its legacy to the present suggest otherwise. From the origins of film theory – from Hugo Münsterberg through French Impressionism to writings of the Weimar Republic – to the mid-twentieth century work of Henri Agel and Amédée Ayfre, as well as Edgar Morin, the soul emerges as a multi-faceted, if contested, concept. By revisiting such key moments in the history of film theory, and tracing the survival of this concept through to a range of cutting-edge debates today, from the work of Vivian Sobchack to Jean-Luc Nancy, Gilles Deleuze to Torben Grodal, The Soul of Film Theory tells the heretofore tacit tale of the relation between cinema and the soul, from classical to contemporary times, in dialogue with philosophy, religion, and science.

Enjoying his real debut as a director in 1948 with his notorious documentary about Parisian abattoirs Le Sang des bêtes, Franju went on to make thirteen more courts métrages and eight longs métrages, including his horror classic Les Yeux sans visage. A full introduction and conclusion set Franju's directorial career in the context of his lifelong commitment to France's cinema institutions.

Book Synopsis The Comparative Embryology of Sponges by : Alexander V. Ereskovsky
Download or read book The Comparative Embryology of Sponges written by Alexander V. Ereskovsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-27 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major questions in the evolution of animals is the transition from unicellular to multicellular organization, which resulted in the emergence of Metazoa through a hypothetical Urmetazoa. The Comparative Embryology of Sponges contains abundant original and literary data on comparative embryology and morphology of the Porifera (Sponges), a group of 'lower Metazoa'. On the basis of this material, original typization of the development of Sponges is given and the problems concerning origin and evolution of Porifera and their ontogenesis are discussed. A morphogenetic interpretation of the body plan development during embryogenesis, metamorphosis and asexual reproduction in Sponges is proposed. Special attention is given to the analysis of characteristic features of the ontogenesis in Porifera. The book pursues three primary goals: 1) generalization of all existing information on individual development of sponges, its classification and a statement according to taxonomical structure of Porifera; 2) revealing of heterogeneity of morphogenesis and peculiarities of ontogeneses in various clades of Porifera, and also their correlations with the organization, both adult sponges, and their larvae; 3) revealing homology of morphogeneses in both Porifera and Eumetazoa, testifying to the general evolutionary roots of multicellular animals, and peculiar features of sponges' morphogeneses and ontogenesis. This book will be of interest to embryologists, zoologists, morphologists and researchers in evolutionary biology.
Book Synopsis Stars and Stardom in French Cinema by : Ginette Vincendeau
Download or read book Stars and Stardom in French Cinema written by Ginette Vincendeau and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 2005-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When people think of film stars, they think of Hollywood. Yet, second only to America, French cinema has produced the most substantial galaxy of stars to achieve world fame in their national films. Top French stars are every bit as glamorous and charismatic as their American counterparts, but they are also different from their rivals and opposites, especially in the freedom they have to control their own images and in the ways they straddle mainstream and auteur cinema. This fascinating book, written by a leading authority on French cinema, analyses for the first time the French 'star system' and provides brilliant in-depth studies of the major popular stars of French cinema: Max Linder, Jean Gabin, Brigitte Bardot, Jeanne Moreau and the stars of the New Wave, Louis de Funes, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Alain Delon, Catherine Deneuve, Gerard Depardieu and Juliette Binoche. Stars and Stardom in French Cinema analyses these stars' images and performance styles in the context of the French film industry and in relation to French culture and society.
