Download or read book Sundays in the South written by Tom Kupec and published by Ambassador International. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embarking early one Sunday morning on an innocent road trip from Greenville, South Carolina, to the hills of North Carolina, the unsuspecting husband and wife team of Tom and Linda Kupec had no idea that their one-day trek would turn into a fifty-four-week adventure of a lifetime. South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, West Virginia, Mississippi, and Alabama. Each weekend, the couple discovered a new church that was still preaching the Word of God, even if the worship service was a bit different than what they were used to. Mega churches and tiny ones. Liturgical services and charismatic ones. Cotton fields, football fields, and battlefields. The highest mountains east of the Mississippi River. The largest army base in the country. Breathtaking sunrises rivaled only by the splendor of the changing autumn leaves. Four separate trips to the Atlantic Ocean. Through it all God was showing Tom and Linda the indescribable joy of being in the center of God’s will, being led by His Spirit to places they had never been, both physically and spiritually. God showed them the vastness of His Body, the Church. They encountered people with humble hearts looking to serve their Savior. Hungry hearts aspiring to mature in their walk with God. People in churches that proclaim the risen Christ. Churches proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus despite the continuing decay of an increasingly secular society. Churches graciously embracing the couple from South Carolina with their New York accents. Sundays in the South is the story of God’s redemption and His faithfulness to a couple who has not always been faithful to Him. It’s a story of a God faithful to His church despite its warts and blemishes. Follow along with Tom as he recounts their year-long trek and perhaps be inspired to take a journey of your own.

Book Synopsis Globalization and the American South by : James Charles Cobb
Download or read book Globalization and the American South written by James Charles Cobb and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1955 the Fortune magazine list of America's largest corporations included just 18 with headquarters in the Southeast. By 2002 the number had grown to 123. In fact, the South attracted over half of the foreign businesses drawn to the United States in the 1990s. The eight original essays collected here consider this stunning dynamism in ways that help us see anew the region's place in that ever-accelerating, transnational flow of people, capital, and technology known collectively as "globalization." Moving between local and global perspectives, the essays discuss how once faraway places like Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Indian Subcontinent are now having an impact on the South. One essay, for example, looks at a range of issues behind the explosive growth of North Carolina's Latino population, which grew by almost 400 percent during the 1990s-miles ahead of the national growth percentage of 61. In another essay we learn why BMW workers in Germany, frustrated with the migration of jobs to South Carolina, refer to the American South as "our Mexico." Showing that global forces are often on both sides of the matchup--reshaping the South but also adapting to and exploiting its peculiarities--many of the essays make the point that, although the new ethnic food section at the local Winn-Dixie is one manifestation of globalization, so is the wide-ranging export of such originally southern phenomena as NASCAR and Kentucky Fried Chicken. If a single message emerges from the book, it is this: Beware of tidy accounts of worldwide integration. On one hand, globalization can play to southern shortcomings (think of the region's repute as a source of cheap labor); on the other, the influx of new peoples, customs, and ideas is poised to alter forever the South's historic black-white racial divide.

Book Synopsis Latino Immigrants and the Transformation of the U.S. South by : Mary E. Odem
Download or read book Latino Immigrants and the Transformation of the U.S. South written by Mary E. Odem and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latino population in the South has more than doubled over the past decade. The mass migration of Latin Americans to the U.S. South has led to profound changes in the social, economic, and cultural life of the region and inaugurated a new era in southern history. This multidisciplinary collection of essays, written by U.S. and Mexican scholars, explores these transformations in rural, urban, and suburban areas of the South. Using a range of different methodologies and approaches, the contributors present in-depth analyses of how immigration from Mexico and Central and South America is changing the South and how immigrants are adapting to the southern context. Among the book’s central themes are the social and economic impact of immigration, the resulting shifts in regional culture, new racial dynamics, immigrant incorporation and place-making, and diverse southern responses to Latino newcomers. Various chapters explore ethnic and racial tensions among poultry workers in rural Mississippi and forestry workers in Alabama; the “Mexicanization” of the urban landscape in Dalton, Georgia; the costs and benefits of Latino labor in North Carolina; the challenges of living in transnational families; immigrant religious practice and community building in metropolitan Atlanta; and the creation of Latino spaces in rural and urban South Carolina and Georgia.
