Book excerpt: This historical book is a sequel to Caesar's Commentaries on the Civil War, and it is widely assumed that his lieutenant Aulus Hirtius ghost wrote it. After the battle of Pharsalus, Caesar pursues the defeated Pompey to Alexandria, only to discover that his adversary has been killed by the Egyptians. Caesar later chose to ally himself with Cleopatra, sister of Ptolemy XIII, enduring a siege that resulted in the infamous burning of the library of Alexandria, according to Plutarch. Caesar turned his attention to Asia after winning the Battle of the Nile in 47 BC. The book concludes with Caesar's famous remark 'Veni, Vidi, vici' (I came, I saw, I conquered) after his victory over Pontus at the Battle of Zena.

Book excerpt: This biography situates Julius Caesar within the wider context of the crisis of the Roman Republic. The author begins his account with an exposition of the upbringing and education of Caesar, demonstrating how limitations were deliberately imposed on the development of talent and the growth of personality of Romans. But early on, Caesar marked himself out as one whose self-confidence and energy would one day bring him into conflict with institutions obsessed with the denial of the individual. He was the first outside to challenge the Senate - and he got away with it. It was not that he wanted to destroy the Republic; rather, he believed strongly in the rights of individuals and their rights to freedom of speech.

Book excerpt: In his Commentarii de Bello Civili Julius Caesar sought to re-invent his image and appear before his present and future readers in a way which he could control and at times manipulate. Offering a new interpretation of the Bellum Civile this book reveals the intricate literary world that Caesar creates using sophisticated techniques such as a studied choice of vocabulary, rearrangement of events, use of indirect speech, and more. Each of the three books of the work is examined independently to set out the gradual transformation of Caesar's literary persona, in step with his ascent in the 'real' world. By analysing the work from Caesar's viewpoint the author argues that by adroit presentation and manipulation of historical circumstances Caesar creates in his narrative a different reality, one in which his conduct is justified. The question of the res publica is also a key point of the volume, as it is in the Bellum Civile, and the author argues that Caesar purposely does not present himself as a Republican, contrary to commonly held views. Employing detailed philological analyses of Caesar's three books on the Civil War, this work significantly advances our understanding of Caesar as author and politician.

Book excerpt: Julius Caesar (100-44 B.C.) is one of the most famous men in history, and his name was used to denote the status of emperor throughout European countries like Italy, Germany, and Russia nearly 2,000 years after his famous assassination. Before he won the civil war against Pompey the Great and ended the Roman Republic permanently, Caesar became a man of power and fame in modern day France, leading armies in the Gallic campaign. Moreover, Caesar wrote extensively about the campaign, giving readers a fantastic primary account of the history of the times. It was after the Gallic campaign that Caesar would eventually lead his legions across the Rubicon and into Italy, starting the civil war that he would ultimately win.

This description of the events at Alexandria forms a continuous narrative that represents Latin at its clearest, devoid of the artificiality that often makes Latin historical writing so difficult for those who are not experts. The book also includes an informative introduction covering Caesar's career, the war in Alexandria, and the style of Caesar and Hirtius, who is believed to have completed Caesar's writing on the subject. Insightful commentary and extensive vocabulary also are included in the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: De Bello Alexandrino (also Bellum Alexandrinum; On the Alexandrine War) is a Latin work continuing Julius Caesar's commentaries, De Bello Gallico and De Bello Civili. It details Caesar's campaigns in Alexandria and Asia. De Bello Alexandrino is followed by De Bello Africo and De Bello Hispaniensi. These three works end the Cesarean corpus relating Caesar's civil war. Though normally collected and bound with Caesar's authentic writings, their authorship has been debated since antiquity. Suetonius suggests both Oppius and Hirtius as possible authors of De Bello Alexandrino. A. Klotz demonstrate in great detail that the style of De Bello Alexandrino is very similar to the style of the eighth and last book of De Bello Gallico, which is very commonly attributed to Hirtius. Thus it seems likely on stylistic grounds that if it was Hirtius who completed the Gallic Wars, it was Hirtius also who wrote De Bello Alexandrino. But if he did so, his knowledge of the campaign was second-hand, as the author of De Bello Gallico, VIII writes in the introductory chapter: "For myself, I had not the occasion to take part in the Alexandrian and African wars" (Mihi ne illud quidem accidit, ut Alexandrino atque Africano bello interessem).
