Every single one of them does.” In settings that range from rural fishing communities to the urban capital, the stories of Cabin, Clearing, Forest are a lyrical road map to the human landscape of contemporary Alaska. In “Blue Ticket,” a stranger finds solace in a Juneau homeless encampment. Old friends argue over the pleasures and perils of small-town life in “A Beginner’s Guide to Leaving Your Hometown,” and in “Every Island Longs for the Continent,” a young family falls apart after moving to Kodiak. In these thirteen stories, Zach Falcon explores the burdens of familiarity and the pains of estrangement through characters struggling with their place in the world.

Download or read book In the Great Apache Forest written by James Willard Schultz and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-13 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings us the story of George Crosby, the Lone Boy Scout. George Crosby was born and has lived all of his seventeen years, in Greer, a settlement of a half-dozen pioneer families located on the Little Colorado River, in the White Mountains, Arizona. At the beginning of the Great War Geroge considered what he could do for the good cause. During the summer of 1918, the Supervisor of the Apache National Forest found himself woefully short of men, with the dreaded fire season coming on. Most of his rangers, fire lookouts, and patrols had gone to the war, and he could not find enough men of the right sort to take their place so George Crosby became a member of a troop of the Phoenix Boy Scouts of America. Contents: Alone on Mount Thomas The Mountain Cave The Firebugs at Work Hunting the Deserter The People-of-Peace The Wrongs of the Hopis The Old Men in Rain God's Cave The Death of Old Double Killer The Bear Skin Is Stolen Catching the Firebugs

Book Synopsis Uncommon Weather by : Richard Chiappone
Download or read book Uncommon Weather written by Richard Chiappone and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncommon Weather is an eclectic mix of character-driven stories that delivers a panoramic picture of Alaska— from the cold city streets of Anchorage to picturesque but emotionally treacherous small Alaska towns; from the rough-and-tumble commercial fishing world of the distant Aleutian Islands to a remote river in the Brooks Range, where the vast and unforgiving Arctic wilderness puts romance to a severe test. Richard Chiappone’s characters hail from a wide range of socioeconomic strata, each one attempting to figure out the difficult question of how best to live among others. Odd connections abound. In the seriocomic title story, a lonely middle-aged woman, weary of her austere Alaskan life and her crumbling marriage, picks up a hockey stick and a younger man and tries to brawl her way to some better future. A man diagnosed with an apparently terminal illness is caught up in a catastrophic criminal undertaking masterminded by a precocious seventeen-year-old girl. A young boy, determined to fit in with his edgier peers, goes through a metamorphosis, becoming a strange new creature he’s never seen before. With sometimes hilarious missteps, each character stumbles in and out of predicaments that are by turns tender, heartbreaking, dangerous, and even violent. Told with great empathy and often deeply ironic, wry, and sardonic humor, these stories are a counterpoint to the usual mythos, illuminating an Alaska not usually portrayed in books, on TV, or in movies.
