Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INDOCRYPT 2001, the Second Annual Crypto Conference, is proof of the s- ni?cant amount of enthusiasm generated among Indian as well as International crypto communities. INDOCRYPT 2001 was organized by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, also located in Madras (now Chennai). This event was enthusiastically co-sponsored by eAl- traz ConsultingPrivate Ltd, Chennai, Odyssey Technologies Ltd, Chennai, and Shanmuga Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA), Th- javur. The Program Committee Co-chair, Prof.C.Pandu Rangan was responsible for local organization and registration. The Program Committee considered 77 papers and selected 31 papers for presentation. These papers were selected on the basis of perceived originality, quality, and relevance to the ?eld of cryptography. The proceedings include the revised version of the accepted papers. Revisions were not checked as to their contents and authors bear full responsibility for the contents of their submissions. The selection of papers is a very challengingand demandingtask. We wish to thank the Program Committee members who did an excellent job in reviewing the submissions in spite of severe time constraints imposed by the tight p- cessingschedule. Each submission was reviewed by at least three referees (only a few by two). The Program Committee was ably assisted by a large number of reviewers in their area of expertise. The list of reviewers has been provided separately. Our thanks go to all of them.

Book excerpt: Cybercrime: A Reference Handbook documents the history of computer hacking from free long distance phone calls to virtual espionage to worries of a supposed "cyber apocalypse," and provides accessible information everyone should know. An issue so new and evolving so quickly, there are few sources from which readers can get the information they need to inform themselves about and protect themselves from cybercrime. Written by experts in the field, this reference work contains original essays, descriptions of technical aspects, and numerous contributions from over 100 sources. Cybercrime uses fascinating case studies to analyze the beginning of cybercrime and the path it has followed to the present day. With biographical sketches of many influential hackers, the reader will better understand the development of the cybercriminal, and how many of these individuals went on to create some of the computer industry's most useful software. From cyberstalking to viruses, scholars and students alike will find the answers they need to understand these issues.

Book excerpt: This invaluable book presents papers written during the last 40 years by Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and his collaborators on various physical effects which can be observed on atoms interacting with electromagnetic fields. It consists of a personal selection of review papers, lectures given at schools, as well as original experimental and theoretical papers. Emphasis is placed on physical mechanisms and on general approaches (such as the dressed atom approach) having a wide range of applications. Various topics are discussed, such as atoms in intense laser fields, photon correlations, quantum jumps, radiative corrections, laser cooling and trapping, BoseOCoEinstein condensation. In this new edition, about 200-page of new material has been added."

Book excerpt: Underlying most of the IWANN calls for papers is the aim to reassume some of the motivations of the groundwork stages of biocybernetics and the later bionics formulations and to try to reconsider the present value of two basic questions. The?rstoneis:“Whatdoesneurosciencebringintocomputation(thenew bionics)?” That is to say, how can we seek inspiration in biology? Titles such as “computational intelligence”, “arti?cial neural nets”, “genetic algorithms”, “evolutionary hardware”, “evolutive architectures”, “embryonics”, “sensory n- romorphic systems”, and “emotional robotics” are representatives of the present interest in “biological electronics” (bionics). Thesecondquestionis:“Whatcanreturncomputationtoneuroscience(the new neurocybernetics)?” That is to say, how can mathematics, electronics, c- puter science, and arti?cial intelligence help the neurobiologists to improve their experimental data modeling and to move a step forward towards the understa- ing of the nervous system? Relevant here are the general philosophy of the IWANN conferences, the sustained interdisciplinary approach, and the global strategy, again and again to bring together physiologists and computer experts to consider the common and pertinent questions and the shared methods to answer these questions.

Book excerpt: For this book, the editors invited and called for contributions from indispensable research areas relevant to "chance discovery," which has been defined as the discovery of events significant for making a decision, and studied since 2000. From respective research areas as artificial intelligence, mathematics, cognitive science, medical science, risk management, methodologies for design and communication, the invited and selected authors in this book present their particular approaches to chance discovery. The chapters here show contributions to identifying rare or hidden events and explaining their significance, predicting future trends, communications for scenario development in marketing and design, identification effects and side-effects of medicines, etc. The methods presented in this book are based on the interaction of human, machine, and human's living environment, rather than based purely automated predictions of the future. This is a promising direction of computer-supported decision of human in a radically changing environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is organized around the various sensing techniques used to achieve structural health monitoring. Its main focus is on sensors, signal and data reduction methods and inverse techniques, which enable the identification of the physical parameters, affected by the presence of the damage, on which a diagnostic is established. Structural Health Monitoring is not oriented by the type of applications or linked to special classes of problems, but rather presents broader families of techniques: vibration and modal analysis; optical fibre sensing; acousto-ultrasonics, using piezoelectric transducers; and electric and electromagnetic techniques. Each chapter has been written by specialists in the subject area who possess a broad range of practical experience. The book will be accessible to students and those new to the field, but the exhaustive overview of present research and development, as well as the numerous references provided, also make it required reading for experienced researchers and engineers.
