Book excerpt: Elliptic curves have played an increasingly important role in number theory and related fields over the last several decades, most notably in areas such as cryptography, factorization, and the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. However, most books on the subject assume a rather high level of mathematical sophistication, and few are truly accessible to

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the arithmetic and metrical theory of regular continued fractions and is intended to be a modern version of A. Ya. Khintchine's classic of the same title. Besides new and simpler proofs for many of the standard topics, numerous numerical examples and applications are included (the continued fraction of e, Ostrowski representations and t-expansions, period lengths of quadratic surds, the general Pell's equation, homogeneous and inhomogeneous diophantine approximation, Hall's theorem, the Lagrange and Markov spectra, asymmetric approximation, etc). Suitable for upper level undergraduate and beginning graduate students, the presentation is self-contained and the metrical results are developed as strong laws of large numbers.

Book excerpt: Advanced Heat Transfer, Second Edition provides a comprehensive presentation of intermediate and advanced heat transfer, and a unified treatment including both single and multiphase systems. It provides a fresh perspective, with coverage of new emerging fields within heat transfer, such as solar energy and cooling of microelectronics. Conductive, radiative and convective modes of heat transfer are presented, as are phase change modes. Using the latest solutions methods, the text is ideal for the range of engineering majors taking a second-level heat transfer course/module, which enables them to succeed in later coursework in energy systems, combustion, and chemical reaction engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains an up-to-date survey and self-contained chapters on contact slant submanifolds and geometry, authored by internationally renowned researchers. The notion of slant submanifolds was introduced by Prof. B.Y. Chen in 1990, and A. Lotta extended this notion in the framework of contact geometry in 1996. Numerous differential geometers have since obtained interesting results on contact slant submanifolds. The book gathers a wide range of topics such as warped product semi-slant submanifolds, slant submersions, semi-slant ξ┴ -, hemi-slant ξ┴ -Riemannian submersions, quasi hemi-slant submanifolds, slant submanifolds of metric f-manifolds, slant lightlike submanifolds, geometric inequalities for slant submanifolds, 3-slant submanifolds, and semi-slant submanifolds of almost paracontact manifolds. The book also includes interesting results on slant curves and magnetic curves, where the latter represents trajectories moving on a Riemannian manifold under the action of magnetic field. It presents detailed information on the most recent advances in the area, making it of much value to scientists, educators and graduate students.

Book excerpt: Evgenii Mikhailovich Lifshitz is perhaps best known for his long association with his mentor Lev D Landau, with whom he co-wrote the classic Course of Theoretical Physics, but he was a noted and respected Soviet physicist in his own right. Born in the Ukraine to a scientific family, his long and distinguished career will be remembered for three things - his collaboration with Landau on the internationally acclaimed Course of Theoretical Physics, his work as editor of the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics, and his scientific papers. As well as his work with Landau, E\M\Lifshitz collaborated with many noted Soviet scientists such as I\M\Khalatnikov, I\E\Dyzaloshinskii, V\V\Sudakov, V\A\Belinskii and the editor of this book, L\P\Pitaevskii. Many of the papers presented in this book include their contribution. Collected together they give a comprehensive and penetrating insight into the man and his work, clearly showing Lifshitz's contribution to physics and the influences on his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To-date computers are supposed to store and exploit knowledge. At least that is one of the aims of research fields such as Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems. However, the problem is to understand what knowledge means, to find ways of representing knowledge, and to specify automated machineries that can extract useful information from stored knowledge. Knowledge is something people have in their mind, and which they can express through natural language. Knowl edge is acquired not only from books, but also from observations made during experiments; in other words, from data. Changing data into knowledge is not a straightforward task. A set of data is generally disorganized, contains useless details, although it can be incomplete. Knowledge is just the opposite: organized (e.g. laying bare dependencies, or classifications), but expressed by means of a poorer language, i.e. pervaded by imprecision or even vagueness, and assuming a level of granularity. One may say that knowledge is summarized and organized data - at least the kind of knowledge that computers can store.

Book excerpt: Although realistic soil and rock foundations reveal noticeable deviations in their properties from homogeneity and isotropy, the model of the homogeneous isotropie elastic half-space is widely used when studying static and dynamie interactions between a defonnable foundation and structures. This is explained by significant mathematieal difficulties inherent in problems conceming mechanies of anisotropie and heterogeneous elastic bodies. Solving the basic static and dynamie problems for heterogeneous and anisotropic half-spaces, such as different contact problems and problems of constructing Green's functions, has become possible in the last few decades due to the development of computer engineering techniques and numerical methods. This book contains the results of investigations in the area of statics and dynamies of heterogeneous and anisotropic foundations, carried out by the author in the last five years while working in the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. The book is directed at engineers and scientists in the areas of soil mechanics, soil-structures interaction, seismology and geophysics. Some characteristic features of the book are: i) Constructing (Chap.l) solutions in a general fonn for the heterogeneous (in the depth direction) transversely isotropic elastic half-space subjected to different loadings, hannonic in time. Characteristics of the given half-space have an influence on functions (of depth z and parameter k of Hankel's transfonns), which are detennined from a system of ordinary differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Number and geometry are the foundations upon which mathematics has been built over some 3000 years. This book is concerned with the logical foundations of number systems from integers to complex numbers. The author has chosen to develop the ideas by illustrating the techniques used throughout mathematics rather than using a self-contained logical treatise. The idea of proof has been emphasised, as has the illustration of concepts from a graphical, numerical and algebraic point of view. Having laid the foundations of the number system, the author has then turned to the analysis of infinite processes involving sequences and series of numbers, including power series. The book also has worked examples throughout and includes some suggestions for self-study projects. In addition there are tutorial problems aimed at stimulating group work and discussion.
