(cohesion-angle of friction) characterization model for the design of asphalt mixtures and asphalt pavements. It is demonstrated that, since the model is based on the fundamental material properties represented by C and ?, it can derive analytically other asphalt mix design parameters such as Marshall stability and flow, and indirect tensile strength. The C-? characterization model therefore offers a useful basis for the development of a comprehensive design framework that integrates asphalt mix design with asphalt pavement structural design. To demonstrate this capability, the research developed an empirical-mechanistic rutting prediction model of asphalt pavement layer using the C-? characterization model. In addition, the model allows stresses and strains under design loading to be computed, which can be applied as input to structural analysis for asphalt material selection and pavement thickness design.

Based purely on volumetrics, such design methods have little consideration of the mechanical performance of the mixtures. With the trend of moving the pavement research into more mechanistic based methods and targeting the ultimate goal to good field performance, it is necessary to develop a sophisticated mix design and characterization methodology which can help the designer understand the expected engineering performance of the mix at the early stages, at the same time, to have a more efficient tool to evaluate the quality of the mixtures. This research develops a comprehensive aggregate gradation and asphalt mixture design method that estimates the mechanical properties of the mix at early stage. In this method, strong correlations between aggregate properties, volumetrics, and mechanical properties are identified, making the VMA (Voids in Mineral Aggregate) an excellent media to link the properties of aggregates and asphalt binder to their engineering performance. The concept of the design procedure, especially the aggregate gradation design procedure, is largely based on an analysis of aggregate packing and interlocking. As a fast and convenient design method that emphasizes more on the mechanical performance of the mix, the new design method can be used to evaluate the quality of an existing gradation and mix design, and adjust the gradation of a new mix to satisfy both volumetrics and mechanical properties. In addition, the characteristics of asphalt mixture are studied using micromechanical based discrete element method (DEM) and macromechanical modeling. In DEM simulation, an image based ball clumping technique is used for simulating the angularity properties of aggregate particles. The DEM model is established and calibrated to describe the viscoelastic (dynamic modulus and phase angle) and viscoelastic plastic (strength) properties of asphalt mixtures with or without damage involved. As for macromechanical modeling, a constitutive model for characterizing the permanent deformation of asphalt mixture is explored by taking consideration of the directional distribution of aggregates (anisotropy), and the damage induced by plasticity.

Book excerpt: This book presents the detailed results of five task groups of the RILEM technical committee TC 237-SIB on Testing and Characterization of Sustainable Innovative Bituminous Materials and Systems. It concentrates on specific new topics in asphalt binder and mixture testing, dealing with new developments in asphalt testing, in particular also in view of new innovative bituminous materials, such as hot and cold recycled mixtures, grid reinforced pavements and recycled Reclaimed Asphalt Pavements (RAP), where test methods developed for traditional asphalt concrete are not a priori applicable. The main objective is providing a basis for pre-standardization by comparing different test methods and showing ways for fundamental improvements. Thus, the book also points the way for a further advanced chemo-physical understanding of materials and their role in pavement systems relying on fundamental material properties and suitable models for describing and predicting the intrinsic mechanisms that determine the material behavior.

Book excerpt: Performance modeling of asphalt concrete pavements is one of the most difficult, but important tasks facing pavement engineers. Experiences at North Carolina State University suggest that this task is best accomplished by utilizing two separate models; one to account for the material behavior and another to account for boundary conditions, such as tire-pavement interaction, temperature gradient along the layer thickness, pavement structural design, etc. The material characterization model should focus on the material irrespective of geometry, i.e., fundamental properties. The structural model should be robust enough to account for the range of conditions experienced by pavements in service. Two peer-reviewed and published papers are presented here which deal with the development of a constitutive material model for asphalt concrete. In the first, the viscoelastoplastic continuum damage model in tension is applied to materials from the Federal Highway Administration's Accelerated Load Facility study on modified mixture performance. It is shown that the material model is capable of describing the behavior of the tested mixtures over a range of conditions from primarily viscoelastic to primarily viscoplastic. Further, the model shows sensitivity to changes in asphalt binder and the ability to predict the behavior of asphalt concrete mixtures containing polymer modified binder. The second paper presents results from an experimental study of anisotropy in asphalt concrete. Anisotropy occurs due to the preferential orientation of aggregate particles in the mixture and is found to have varying levels of significance depending on both the mode of loading and the levels of deformation applied. In the linear viscoelastic range, anisotropy is found to have little effect on the material behavior, whereas under monotonic compressive loading until failure, it is found to contribute significantly. Further, it is found that temperature and rate affect the significance of anisotropy.

Book excerpt: In recent years, with the rapid development of the world transportation industry, the proportion of asphalt pavement in road engineering is increasing. Therefore, while the demand for asphalt and asphalt mixture is increasing, the quality requirements for materials are also improving. In particular, new materials and new technologies are constantly emerging, and the application technology, theory, and technical specifications of asphalt materials have made great progress.

Book excerpt: The Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) method, currently known as Pavement ME, recommends using locally calibrated material characterization models developed from laboratory testing of local materials under specific environmental and traffic loading conditions. The Pavement ME design method offers a more realistic design procedure and reduces the uncertainty that arise from empirical design procedures. This thesis developed a locally calibrated indirect tensile (IDT) strength material model for low temperature cracking predictions of hot mix asphalt (HMA) in Manitoba, Canada. In addition, the research investigated the integration of locally calibrated HMA, and unbound granular material characterization models into the Pavement ME framework to improve the design of flexible pavements. Laboratory IDT testing was conducted on typical HMA mixtures containing extracted binders and varying percentages of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). The laboratory measured IDT strengths were used to calibrate a local IDT strength predictive model for Manitoba. The predictions from the local Manitoba model were compared to the predictions from the global Pavement ME IDT model, and a Michigan calibrated IDT model, using a statistical analysis. It was found that the global Pavement ME IDT strength model, if used without local calibration, produced inaccurate predictions of the IDT strength for Manitoba mixtures. It was also found that binder characterization methods in Level 2 and Level 3 can significantly impact the accuracy of IDT strength predictions. A case study using developed local HMA, base, and subgrade material characterization models in Manitoba were compared to designs using default (Level 3) material input values in Pavement ME design software. The results of integrating the locally calibrated models for HMA, base and subgrade layers demonstrated that the locally calibrated materials model inputs produce lower pavement structural thicknesses with higher reliability in the predicted distresses when compared to the default materials inputs. The effect of using calibrated material inputs was more pronounced for higher traffic loadings. The results of the study demonstrate that the use of calibrated models can potentially produce optimized pavement thicknesses due to improved pavement designs.
