Book excerpt: Excerpt from By-Ways of Europe The cause of my having travelled so extensively has been due to a succession of circumstances, of a character more or less accidental. My prolonged wanderings formed no part of my youthful programme of life. I cannot dis connect my early longings for a knowledge of the Old World from a still earlier passion for Art and Literature. To the latter was added a propensity, which I have never unlearned, of acquiring as much knowledge as possible through the medium of my own experience rathe. Than toaccept it, unquestioned, from anybody else. When I first set out for Europe I was still a boy, and less acquainted with life than most boys Of my age. I was driven to the venture by the strong necessity of providing for myself sources of education which, situated as I was, could not be reached at home. In other words, the journey Offered me a chance of working my way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I mean by that if you visit merely the places you think you ought to see because they are famous, instead of the places you really wish to go to because they will interest you, then your trip will be spoiled. If you are not the least interested in pictures, it is a rather foolish waste of time to be bored by the galleries; and if you delight in old castles, why go to the modem cities? And if you want to find the quaint and medieval villages, where life and environment are completely at variance with your own, why not go there? Now in no sense is this book intended to usurp the place of indispensable Baedeker, nor does it profess to enumerate, much less describe, all that is worth while in Europe; no one volume could do that. Chiefly do I try to tell the reader where to go in each land to find the things that distinguish that land from his own and from other countries, the things that are unlike the things, or are better worth-while than the same kind of things to be found elsewhere. The missionary work in Europe began in the Balkan Penin sula and in Italy; but, as the whole of these countries did not become nominally Christian until Ireland and a large part of Great Britain had been evangelized, it seemed best to place the countries in the order in which Christianity became generally established as the religion of its peoples. Freeman set forth on his last visit to Spain his immediate interest was the completion of his History of Sicily. It was known, however, by his friends that he had left behind in an unfinished state the materials for a volume on Western Europe in the Fifth Century. Like many other historical students he was much interested in the few historical notices that have survived concerning the events in Britain during the fifth century. He desired to understand them, and as far as possible to fit them in with what we know of the general political development of Western Europe, and he felt that the only way of approaching this subject with any chance of permanent success was to make sure of the events that had happened in Gaul. If we understood clearly what had occurred there we were at least in possession of information which would keep us from Wrong ideas as to what might have happened in insular Britain. The incidents that are recorded are so brief and isolated that, taken by themselves, they fail to give us any idea of what was going on, but when we look at them in the light created by events in Gaul we perceive faint traces of a connexion between them; it is the fading influence of the magic name, res publica Romana, and the efforts that were being made, secular and religious, to revive it for the salvation of the island. It was then for this purpose that he had given as professor two or three courses of lectures on this subject, and it is evident from such. Book excerpt: Excerpt from European Days and Ways Low, and loud, and sweetly blended, Low at times, and loud at times, And changing like a poet's rhymes, Rang the beautiful wild chimes. A fortified city, famous in war and in statecraft, Antwerp nevertheless bestows more conspicuous veneration upon its artists than upon its soldiers or its statesmen. The finest memorials which adorn its public places are not of warriors, or diplomatists, but of the great master, Rubens, and his illustrious disciples, Vandyke and Teniers. Indeed, the name and works Of Rubens it may almost be said, constitute the chief glory Of Antwerp. The Museum contains his Crucifixion, -consummate in terrible sublimity, - his gorgeous Adoration of the Magi, and his dead Christ, known as the Christ a la Paille. His chair, even, is enshrined in a glass cabinet. His masterpiece, the Descent from the Cross, is preserved with pious care in the cathedral, where it is protected by a folding screen. His Elevation of the Cross, guarded in like manner, hangs on the wall Opposite. His Scourging of Christ - a famous picture - is in the old Domin ican chapel now known as the Church of St. Paul. The Church of St. Jacques contains one of his finest altar-pieces and his tomb. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Modern Europe The text which follows differs from the many inter esting and valuable school histories which have preceded it in laying greater emphasis upon the Contemporary Period. This change of values reflects, I think, the ten deney of American schools of history, and these in turn are responding to the growing world-interests of the American people. An expansion of the Nineteenth Cen tury implies a corresponding contraction in the earlier centuries, the period of historical instruction remaining constant. It is a pity, when the history of Europe is everywhere so attractive; but it is inevitable. Our fore fathers were content with classical, and often with myth ical personages we have been made to comprehend our Luther and Loyola, our Mirabeau and Napoleon; and. Our children will have to make more room for their Ca vour, their Bismarck, and their Gladstone. It is a choice of benefits, and there are many substantial reasons why, in the building up of a system of popular education, the present should not be sacrificed to the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Medieval and Modern Europe The attempt has been made to narrate the history of the more important countries together in chronological order, in stead of giving to each a separate treatment, and so obliging the reader to move forward and backward along the Chrono logical series and, by an unusual effort of attention, make the necessary correlation of events, or fail to gain an adequate con ception of the progress of Europe as a whole. Many events in one country directly affected events in another or at least illustrated similar tendencies in thought or in institutions. The result of the attempt to narrate the history of Europe in this way may occasionally seem to lack the compactness and clearness of a separate treatment, but it Should possess the advantages of a larger unity, making intelligible what might otherwise seem the consequence of individual caprice or of chance. This method should also accustom the pupil to group events, in order by discovering their relations to gain more of their meaning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Recent European History, 1815-1916 This outline with the accompanying references is a revision and enlargement of An Outline for the History of Europe Since 1815 prepared in 1913 for the use of students at the Ohio State University. Like its predecessor it contains much fuller references on the period since 1870 than on the earlier years. Both Hazen's Europe Since 1915 and the second volume of Hayes's Political and Social History of Mod ern Europe have been followed in preparing the outline; and references to both these excellent books have been appended to most of the topics. Students should read one or both of these and at least one of the Additional References under each special topic. The purpose of the outline is not to provide a brief summary of the facts, predigested mental pabulum, as it were; but to provide a scheme of organization, to suggest to the student what he is to look for as he reads, and to teach liim to distinguish between essentials and non essentials. Hence the facts are not usually stated, but the student is left to work them out from his reference readings both in Hazen and Hayes and the Additional References. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rebirth of Europe: A Study of the Middle Age UR modern world, with its keener sense of spiritual values, and its finer conception of personal and national responsibility, differs from the old Roman world as much as if our race had been removed bodily to Jupiter or Saturn. As much! Better to say more: for with the merely physical transfer all the old ways and habits of thought would have been retained, and perhaps intensified; as was the case with the Greek colonists, who made their new homes in Asia even more Grecian than Athens itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Medieval Europe This book aims to trace the development of Europe and its civilization, from the decline of the Roman Empire to the opening of the sixteenth century, for the benefit of the college student and the general reader. It is almost needless to say that such a work makes little claim to originality in method and still less in subject-matter, which it has shame lessly borrowed from numerous sources. Indeed, in a book of this sort it is more fitting to apologize for anything new that one says than for following in old and beaten tracks. The author, of course, hopes that without making too radical departures he has introduced some improvement in selection and presentation of material, and that he has made few mistakes of fact and interpretation. The Table of Contents indicates the general plan of the volume, which is to treat medieval Europe as a whole and to hang the story upon a single thread, rather than to recount as distinct narratives the respective histories of France, England, Germany, Italy, and other countries of modem Europe. French or English history may be studied as such in courses and books so labeled. Moreover, the modern interest in the national state has usually been car ried too far in the study of the Middle Ages. Local division, not national unity and central government, is surely the striking feature through most of the medieval centuries.
