Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything you need to know about serials librarianship—in one handy volume! For library science students and library professionals, Introduction to Serials Work for Library Technicians is a practical, how-to-do-it text that shows you how to perform the behind-the-scenes tasks your job requires. This primer walks you through the entire process of serials management for both larger libraries with automated serials management systems as well as small school and public libraries that must handle their serials manually. From an introduction to serials work to the latest in technology for archiving, this book will ensure that your library customers are not inconvenienced by inaccuracies or inefficient organization. Introduction to Serials Work for Library Technicians will benefit anyone who handles serials in a library since it covers all aspects of serials: acquisitions, organization, check-ins, and cataloging. This book addresses the complications that occur working with a form of publication that can include any medium from newspapers to CD-Rom and can be published as often as every day or as infrequently as once a year. Difficulties include title changes, serial merges and splits, suspensions and cessations of publication, and changes in format, and this volume will show you how to find the solutions to these situations. Here’s a sample of what is explored in this book: acquisitions—how to locate, find bibliographic information on, and verify the title of a desired serial ordering—types of orders, new subscription orders, and back-ordering receiving—checking in serials, recording holdings information, using Kardex cards, and using an automated check-in system cataloging—using holding and union lists, creating and using online catalogues, and cataloguing standards and internet serials processing—shelving policies, types of shelving, and how to shelve claims, binding, and renewals Intended primarily as a textbook for students in library sciences programs, this book will also serve very well as a general reference for experienced or novice library technicians or other staff members who find themselves managing serials or automating their system. The book's complete glossary, bibliography, numerous definitions, and tables, as well as the real-life examples throughout this manual will help you navigate the challenges of record-keeping, claiming, and cataloguing serials in any library.

Book excerpt: Stay on the cutting edge of the e-serials world with this updated edition! This new edition of the seminal 1998 volume gives you a comprehensive overview of the world of e-serials in one compact volume! With new contributions and updated chapters from authorities in their respective fields, this book covers publishing, pricing, copyright, acquisitions and collection development, cataloging and metadata, preservation and archiving, projects and innovations, indexing, uniform resource identifiers, and citation. From editor Wayne Jones: “Most of the articles in the first edition have been retained, but because so much has happened with e-serials in the last three years, the authors have often had to completely restructure their work to reflect the current situation. There are new articles in this book too, exploring in more detail some topics which took up less room on the plate in the first edition--for example, experimentation by e-journal publishers and tracking titles in aggregator packages.” This essential volume: looks at the cost of building and maintaining an e-serials collection examines the perspectives of e-serials customers, intermediaries, and negotiators presents an updated who, what, why, and when for online serials collection development shows how AACR2 can be applied to electronic journals examines electronic journals indexing provides several case studies, including D-Lib Magazine and ScienceDirect includes extensive bibliographies and suggestions for additional reading and much, much more! E-Serials: Publishers, Libraries, Users, and Standards, Second Edition is an essential volume for everyone interested in the nuts and bolts of today’s e-serials!

This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her study of key radio dramas broadcast from 1930 to 1943, Lauren Rea analyses the work of leading exponents of the genre against the wider backdrop of nation-building, intellectual movements and popular culture in Argentina. During the period that has come to be known as the infamous decade, radio serials drew on the Argentine literary canon, with writers such as Héctor Pedro Blomberg and José Andrés González Pulido contributing to the nation-building project as they reinterpreted nineteenth-century Argentina and repackaged it for a 1930s mass audience. Thus, a historical romance set in the tumultuous dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas reveals the conflict between the message transmitted to a mass audience through popular radio drama and the work of historical revisionist intellectuals writing in the 1930s. Transmitted at the same time, González Pulido’s gauchesque series evokes powerful notions of Argentine national identity as it explores the relationship of the gaucho with Argentina’s immigrant population and advocates for the ideal contribution of women and the immigrant population to Argentine nationhood. Rea grounds her study in archival work undertaken at the library of Argentores in Buenos Aires, which holds the only surviving collection of scripts of radio serials from the period. Rea’s book recovers the contribution that these products of popular culture made to the nation-building project as they helped to shape and promote the understanding of Argentine history and cultural identity that is widely held today.
