Book excerpt: Like their human friends, dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Some are smart, like Ma-Buku, a five-pound Chihuahua who squeaks her toy in perfect time with her owners drums. Some refuse to adhere to dog clichés, like four-year-old Elmer, who loves to chase a tennis ball but refuses to pick it up and bring it back, or six-year-old Barnabas, who can’t be bothered to chase cats but will bark vehemently at the wind. There are pretty dogs, heroic dogs, and dogs that are loyal, intuitive, or just plain strange, like Bocci, who goes into a trance when his owner’s pager goes off, and can only be "reset" by being picked up and put back down again. All make an appearance in this delightful collection of stories. Submitted by hundreds of real dog owners, these true tales of mutual love and loyalty affirm that there’s no better friend than a dog.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is anthologized in his book Tales of the Jazz Age. In 1860 Baltimore, Benjamin is born with the physical appearance of a 70-year-old man, already capable of speech. His father Roger invites neighborhood boys to play with him and orders him to play with children's toys, but Benjamin obeys only to please his father. At five, Benjamin is sent to kindergarten but is quickly withdrawn after he repeatedly falls asleep during child activities. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was released as a motion picture late in 2008 starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett and directed by David Fincher. The screenplay differs greatly from the short story. Only the title, Benjamin's name, and most aspects of the aging process are retained in the screenplay. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1896-1940) was an American author of novels and short stories, whose works are the paradigmatic writings of the Jazz Age. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s.

Book excerpt: An accidental dog swap unleashes an unexpected love match in this new romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Julia London. Carly Kennedy's life is in a spiral. She is drowning in work, her divorced parents are going through their midlife crises, and somehow Carly's sister convinces her to foster Baxter--a basset hound rescue with a bad case of the blues. When Carly comes home late from work one day to discover that the dog walker has accidentally switched out Baxter for another perkier, friendlier basset hound, she has reached the end of her leash. When Max Sheffington finds a depressed male basset hound in place of his cheerful Hazel, he is bewildered. But when cute, fiery Carly arrives on his doorstep, he is intrigued. He was expecting the dog walker, not a pretty woman with firm ideas about dog discipline. And Carly was not expecting a handsome, bespectacled man to be feeding her dog mac and cheese. Baxter is besotted with Hazel, and Carly realizes she may have found the key to her puppy’s happiness. For his sake, she starts to spend more time with Hazel and Max, until she begins to understand the appeal of falling for your polar opposite.

Book excerpt: Harm's Way, first published in 1962, is a classic novel of the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II, beginning with a ship on patrol in the waters off Pearl Harbor, and then following the men and ships as they engage the enemy in a time of war. From the dust-jacket: "Framed by the open weather door of his cabin, where he stood peering through the obscure dawn toward Oahu's invisible shoreline, Captain Rockwell Torrey, USN, was not unlike the ship he commanded: tall, spare, angular, and plainly fabricated out of the same hard gray substance that armored both man and cruiser against the weapons of a hostile world. To his Naval Academy classmates, to the men he commanded, to the woman he loved, this man was known as "The Rock." If he possessed any human weaknesses, they were hidden behind a granite facade, unsuspected by subordinates and superiors alike. Yet Rockwell Torrey was a human being, a mere man as well as a fearless leader, beset by doubts, haunted by memory, forced into decision, confronted with fantastic challenges. In spite of - or because of - his humanity, he was first and foremost a commander. Harm's Way is the story of this command, of the war in the Pacific as viewed from the fighting bridge, through the eyes of one officer. It is the story of a man assigned the impossible - to get a stalled operation back on its timetable, mount an invasion against a stronghold reputedly impregnable, stop the enemy's drive against overwhelming odds-and how he succeeded." Author James Bassett was a staff officer closely associated with Fleet Admiral William F. Halsey, and handled his press relations from the Guadalcanal campaign to the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. Bassett held the rank of captain, USNR (Ret.). The novel was the basis for the 1965 Otto Preminger movie In Harm's Way, starring John Wayne and Kirk Douglas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first of the Gumwood tales takes place around the village of Muchadoo in the land of Gumwood. The villagers have just heard that their mayor’s precious ceremonial regalia has been stolen. Who could have taken it? The friends platypus, brush turkey, and possum are falsely accused of the dastardly theft, following a failed attempt to persuade sergeant bulldog to rescue a rabbit from two nasty foxes that ambushed the rabbit and put him in a sugar bag. The king of the foxes has also trapped an unsuspecting goose and put her in a bag. A more subtle enticement is carried out by a cat who wrongly thinks she’s in league with the foxes. She leads a brush turkey into a trap, only to find she’s also caged and ready to be cooked on a bonfire! It turns out the animals were trapped to furnish food for the grand foxes’ yearly feast. Police dogs and the sergeant bulldog go on a wild chase after the friends. Meanwhile, at the great fox feast, the village animals attack the foxes, scattering them into the forest, but the foxes gather together, and while the villagers are looking for them in the forest, the foxes make their way to the village, where they wreak havoc. They light another bonfire, and commence smashing, stealing, eating, and drinking until the villagers return and another fight begins. Where will this all lead? Good triumphs over evil in the end, but there are casualties and one mystery that remains for the next book in the series.
