Book Synopsis Afrikan Family Legacy Millenniums Before Slavery by : Adetokunbo Knowles Borishade

This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History and culture are necessary components for the survival of any people, but are critically important to people of African descent. Together these components form our identity by teaching the accomplishments and successful ways of life of African ancestors from the most ancient times to the present. History in the form of family genealogy provides individuals with physical evidence for a sense of self-identity, purpose, and vision. It also bestows upon African Americans a sense of origin and location within a global context. This book presents a fresh perspective on African history for persons of African descent worldwide as well as for others. It coordinates the MtDNA laboratory results of Dr. Borishade’s maternal grandmother’s genetic haplogroup and the worldwide migration paths of her ancient grandmothers with historical, cultural, and archaeological evidence from 140,000 B.C.E. TO 1800 C.E. The combined research findings are astounding, and have greatly extended her family’s genealogy all the way back to the beginning of humanity. Fascinating Tinsley family narratives emerge within these pages which have intensely inspired and energized her family members. Many people of African descent who have taken the MtDNA laboratory test have been contented to just learn their tribe of origin and the non-African components in their DNA. However, Dr. Borishade envisioned something much larger. She viewed the scientific laboratory results as a powerful psychological,, cultural, and educational tool that has the power to enlighten, transform, and empower future generations. Through the writing of this book, it is hoped that other African Americans who have completed the MtDNA laboratory tests will be encouraged to conduct similar research that begins in 140,000 B.C.E. The resulting information scientifically shatters the negative images, stereotypes, and interpretations imposed upon people of African descent for all time.

Book Synopsis Boy-Wives and Female Husbands by : Stephen O. Murray
Download or read book Boy-Wives and Female Husbands written by Stephen O. Murray and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many myths created about Africa, the claim that homosexuality and gender diversity are absent or incidental is one of the oldest and most enduring. Historians, anthropologists, and many contemporary Africans alike have denied or overlooked African same-sex patterns or claimed that such patterns were introduced by Europeans or Arabs. In fact, same-sex love and nonbinary genders were and are widespread in Africa. Boy-Wives and Female Husbands documents the presence of this diversity in some fifty societies in every region of the continent south of the Sahara. Essays by scholars from a variety of disciplines explore institutionalized marriages between women, same-sex relations between men and boys in colonial work settings, mixed gender roles in east and west Africa, and the emergence of LGBTQ activism in South Africa, which became the first nation in the world to constitutionally ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. Also included are oral histories, folklore, and translations of early ethnographic reports by German and French observers. Boy-Wives and Female Husbands was the first serious study of same-sex sexuality and gender diversity in Africa, and this edition includes a new foreword by Marc Epprecht that underscores the significance of the book for a new generation of African scholars, as well as reflections on the book's genesis by the late Stephen O. Murray. This book is freely available in an open access edition thanks to the generous support of the Murray Hong Family Trust. Book Synopsis African Legal Theory and Contemporary Problems by : Oche Onazi
Download or read book African Legal Theory and Contemporary Problems written by Oche Onazi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a collection of essays, which aim to situate African legal theory in the context of the myriad of contemporary global challenges; from the prevalence of war to the misery of poverty and disease to the crises of the environment. Apart from being problems that have an indelible African mark on them, a common theme that runs throughout the essays in this book is that African legal theory has been excluded, under-explored or under-theorised in the search for solutions to such contemporary problems. The essays make a modest attempt to reverse this trend. The contributors investigate and introduce readers to the key issues, questions, concepts, impulses and problems that underpin the idea of African legal theory. They outline the potential offered by African legal theory and open up its key concepts and impulses for critical scrutiny. This is done in order to develop a better understanding of the extent to which African legal theory can contribute to discourses seeking to address some of the challenges that confront African and non-African societies alike.

Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.
Book Synopsis Orature and Yoruba Riddles by : A. Akinyeme
Download or read book Orature and Yoruba Riddles written by A. Akinyeme and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orature and Yorùbá Riddles takes readers into the hitherto unexplored undercurrents of riddles in Africa. Because of its oral and all too often ephemeral nature, riddles have escaped close scrutiny from scholars. The strength of the Yorùbá as the focus of this study is impressive indeed: a major ethnic group in Africa, with established connections with the black diaspora in North America and the Caribean; a rich oral and written culture; a large and diverse population; and an integrated rural-urban society. The book is divided into six chapters for readers' convenience. When read in sequence, the book provides a comprehensive, holistic sense of Yorùbá creativity where riddles are concerned. At the same time, the book is conceived in a way that each chapter could be read individually. Therefore, those readers seeking understanding of a specific type of riddle may target a single chapter appearing most relevant to her/his curiosity.

Download or read book Africa from the Sixteenth to the Eighteenth Century written by Bethwell A. Ogot and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of years of work by scholars from all over the world, The UNESCO General History of Africa reflects how the different peoples of Africa view their civilizations and shows the historical relationships between the various parts of the continent. Historical connections with other continents demonstrate Africa's contribution to the development of human civilization. Each volume is lavishly illustrated and contains a comprehensive bibliography. This fifth volume of the acclaimed series covers the history of the continent from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the close of the eighteenth century in which two themes emerge: first, the continuing internal evolution of the states and cultures of Africa during this period second, the increasing involvement of Africa in external trade--with major but unforeseen consequences for the whole world. In North Africa, we see the Ottomans conquer Egypt. South of the Sahara, some of the larger, older states collapse, and new power bases emerge. Traditional religions continue to coexist with both Christianity (suffering setbacks) and Islam (in the ascendancy). Along the coast, particularly of West Africa, Europeans establish a trading network which, with the development of New World plantation agriculture, becomes the focus of the international slave trade. The immediate consequences of this trade for Africa are explored, and it is argued that the long-term global consequences include the foundation of the present world-economy with all its built-in inequalities.
