Our world is full of such surprising interdependencies. But how do we help our children understand such complexity -- especially when it impacts the events and the world around them? WHEN A BUTTERFLY SNEEZES teaches us how. Aided by systems thinking, children learn to ask simple questions: What happens next? What happens to this if there is more or less of that? They start to look for patterns in how things happens, to understand why problems arise, and to figure out what they can do about them. This powerful resources includes a fun, detailed discussion of systems thinking, and a comprehensive guide to 12 favorite children's stories that illustrate key systems thinking concepts. A must-have resource for educators and parents who want to help children understand the interconnections in our world. Review: Brandon, How to use stories to unveil the real world, February 14, 2018 I'd been looking for this book for years without knowing it. I use stories to help kids understand the world of complexity - science, history, technology, math, art, and so on. I've long suspected, though, that we can do more than TELL kids stories: stories are things kids can climb into, can play with. A story, I've suspected, can be the start of a sort of game that helps us see how we might live. Sweeney's book is helping me better understand how we might do that. A story, she points out, actually HIDES how the world works. In the real world, everything links up with everything; events transpire in cycles that are hidden. But stories catch our attention precisely because they simplify that complex reality, and give us a handful of protagonists who desire, strive, and then succeed/fail. Sweeney, though, doesn't tell us to turn away from stories, but rather to embrace them and use them (or some of them) to show how the world really functions. As an aside, this book also teaches the basics of complexity theory (formerly chaos theory) more clearly than many popular books in the genre. A close study of the chart on page 10 is worth a few books. Especially useful for anyone who's in love with the Imaginative Education approach of Kieran Egan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together the lectures presented at the 5th Metaphysics of Science Workshop held from June 2 to 3, 2005, in Ghent, Belgium. The aim of this volume is twofold. First, it fields a selection of ongoing discussions on a central topic in contemporary analytical metaphysics. Authors were asked to encapsulate their lecture topic into a pr‚cis, highlighting the contesting views, accentuating the pro and contra of the main arguments, and shedding light on the origin, the evolution and the eventual offspring of a respective discussion. Second, this volume addresses the methodological question by examining what can be learned if we compare these discussions from a methodological perspective. What are the red herrings and shortcomings? Is an integrated methodology possible? Does each discussion finally await a pluralism of plausible positions or will an overall convincing account be expected? And finally, can analytical metaphysics methodologically assert and investigate their basic assumptions, if not from a common sense stance?

Book excerpt: Flutter, Flutter, Butterfly By: Mihee Eun In the world, there are many uncomfortable truths. Truths that are covered up and hidden in hopes that they will fade and be forgotten. As a result of our shame, lies are told and false histories are taught to our children. But we perpetuate the problem when we fail to admit our truths. No matter how ugly or shameful they are, we must remember in order to learn from past mistakes. Otherwise, history will only repeat itself. In this story we see an example of an uncomfortable truth. An innocent girl, at the young age of 15, is forced into sex slavery by the Japanese Army in 1943. Through no fault of her own, her life is disrupted by the many horrors that ensue. Simply because she had been born at a time when Korea was found to be weaker than Japan, the young girl is forced into seclusion, suffering constant pain and abuse from the authorities who took her. But Soonboon’s story is not the only one. Tens of thousands of women still haven’t told their stories, let alone received any consolation or reprieve. These women, their hairs gray, still suffer and protest, saying: “We want an apology! A sincere apology!” For many, the apology did not come soon enough.
