Book Synopsis Japan’s Corporate Income Tax by : Ruud A. de Mooij
Download or read book Japan’s Corporate Income Tax written by Ruud A. de Mooij and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-08-04 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores how corporate income tax reform can help Japan increase investment and boost potential growth. Using international and Japan-specific empirical estimates of corporate tax elasticities, investment is predicted to expand by around 0.4 percent for each point of rate reduction. International consensus estimates suggest further that between 10 and 30 percent of the static revenue loss could be recovered in the long run through dynamic scoring, although Japan’s offset may be closer to the lower bound. Compensating fiscal measures are necessary in light of Japan’s tight fiscal constraints. The scope for base broadening in the corporate income tax is found to be limited and some forms of base broadening will undo positive investment effects of a rate cut. Alternative revenue sources include higher consumption and property taxes. A gradual approach toward lowering tax rates mitigates windfall gains and reduces short-run revenue costs. An incremental allowance-for-corporate-equity system could boost investment with limited fiscal costs in the short run.

Book Synopsis Governments, Globalization, and International Business by : John H. Dunning
Download or read book Governments, Globalization, and International Business written by John H. Dunning and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1997-07-24 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a cliché to say that we live in a globalized world in which investment flows, communications and the operations of multinationals from all parts of the world have changed the character of the international business environment. But the easy concept of globalization poses as many questions as it answers and it is the purpose of this book to address these challenges. In Governments, Globalization, and International Business a prestigious group of international scholars explore in detail the consequences of globalization defined as the deepening structural interdependence of the world economy. In Part 1 John Dunning, Richard Lipsey, Susan Strange and Stephen Kobrin analyse these changes from different disciplinary perspectives and intellectual backgrounds. The basic question they address is what are the consequences of globalization on the nature, form, and level of domestic economic activity?. In doing so, they also consider the increasing mobility of knowledge and information, the role of international corporations, and the sovereignty of the nation state in the modern borderless world. In Part 2 the different experiences and policies of a number of economies are assessed in a series of country studies, These include the G7 countries as well as the developing East Asian economies, Latin America and smaller developed countries. In the final part John Stopford and Edward Graham stand back and look at the changing role of National and Supranational governance. In doing so they underscore a fundamental tenet of the volume, that globalization requires national governments to re-evaluate various factors of their systemic governance. Yet despite apparently convergent trends they argue there are no universal prescriptions for the way governments should respond to globalization, and the policy challenge is a more complex one than merely more or less government.

Book excerpt: As Southeast Asia reels from the impacts of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), domestic resource mobilization (DRM) has never been more challenging or more critical. The pandemic has further reduced tax revenues and public expenditures are facing increasing pressure. This publication identifies technical, policy, and administrative tax capacity issues faced by ten countries in Southeast Asia. It also explores potential policy and administrative measures to strengthen DRM.
