Book excerpt: Burying the Sword: Counteracting Jihadism with Interfaith Education This book analyzes the historical and political context in which various forms of violent extremism (jihadism) have emerged in the Middle East, Europe, and in Africa since 9/11/2001. The growth of the jihadism can be attributed in part to the oppressive regimes of the Middle East which have curtailed the democratic impulses of their youth. Alternative youth movements such as we saw in the Arab Spring can serve as a source of inspiration and model for renewal of these regions. The book also analyzes the role that technology can play in organizing future youth movements and serve as part of an interfaith educational program that has already been initiated in Kenya. New models of interfaith education in public and private schools throughout Africa are needed to counteract the growth of extremist ideologies among the youth of this region.

Book excerpt: When bombs rained down on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Japanese American college students were among the many young men enrolled in ROTC and immediately called upon to defend the Hawaiian islands against invasion. In a few weeks, however, the military government questioned their loyalty and disarmed them. In No Sword to Bury, Franklin Odo places the largely untold story of the wartime experience of these young men in the context of the community created by their immigrant families and its relationship to the larger, white-dominated society. At the heart of the book are vivid oral histories that recall their service on the home front in the Varsity Victory Volunteers, a non-military group dedicated to public works, as well as in the segregated 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Illuminating a critical moment in ethnic identity formation among this first generation of Americans of Japanese descent (the nisei), Odo shows how the war-time service and the post-war success of these men contributed to the simplistic view of Japanese Americans as a model minority in Hawai`i.

In the heart of North Yorkshire, at a place called Walkington Wold, archeologists unearthed twelve skeletons—ten without heads. Later examination revealed the place to be a cemetery for ancient Anglo-Saxons who had been sentenced to death. In the Middle Ages, those who committed suicide were subjected to desecration, a practice that went largely unrecorded. While plague pits, mass graves for victims of the Black Death, have only recently started betraying their secrets. Although unpalatable to some, these burial grounds are an important record of cultural history and social change. Burying the Dead explores how these sites reveal the attitudes, practices, and beliefs of the people who made them.

Book excerpt: The story of the Bamburgh Sword – one of the finest swords ever forged. In 2000, archaeologist Paul Gething rediscovered a sword. An unprepossessing length of rusty metal, it had been left in a suitcase for thirty years. But Paul had a suspicion that the sword had more to tell than appeared, so he sent it for specialist tests. When the results came back, he realised that what he had in his possession was possibly the finest, and certainly the most complex, sword ever made, which had been forged in seventh-century Northumberland by an anonymous swordsmith. This is the story of the Bamburgh Sword – of how and why it was made, who made it and what it meant to the warriors and kings who wielded it over three centuries. It is also the remarkable story of the archaeologists and swordsmiths who found, studied and attempted to recreate the weapon using only the materials and technologies available to the original smith.

Book excerpt: Swords don’t kill friends. Zarando does. And you better believe he’ll never forgive himself about it. Zarando is a god — or at least he answers prayers like a god. When his Agency sends him to a rainy world to answer yet another prayer, he is displeased at best. His state of mind only worsens when he finds out that the world is filled with holes — holes that aren’t supposed to be there. Accompanied by locals Miro and Jagemir, Zarando embarks on a quest to fix the holes. Because that’s his job, isn’t it? However, not everyone enjoys the idea of Zarando completing his job. What if even his own Queen doesn’t want him to succeed? And what if his friend Daevi is right, and this job is tougher than he can handle? Most importantly, what if fixing the holes isn’t his job at all?

Book excerpt: Eurik & Leraine have escaped the land of the necromancers, but still face a long journey. Eurik is looking for answers about who his parents were and how they ended up adrift at sea. Leraine must carry the news of her teacher’s death back home, yet also has a debt to Eurik for helping her to avenge Irelith. Together, they’ll have to traverse the Neisham Hills, where lone travelers are snatched in the night and even numbers don’t guarantee safety. And beyond the hills, all along the long Inza Road, the drums of war beat louder and louder. But the greatest threat may not be goblins, elves, or bandits. It may be the people they’ve chosen to travel with.

Book excerpt: The focus of the book is a biographical telling of the civil war career of Colonel Tobias B. Kaufman. Colonel Kaufman has rightly been called one of the most illustrious of the civil war heroes of Central Pennsylvania by the well-known Pennsylvania civil war soldier and author J. Howard Wert. Kaufman rose from a private to a colonel during the war. Kaufman was a natural leader and a tough and courageous fighter. Kaufman fought in some fifteen major battles including Glendale, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania. This biography features not only the career of Colonel Kaufman but also a summary history of his first regiment, the First Pennsylvania Reserves. Of particular interest in his personal career was his dramatic capture on the Bermuda Hundred Peninsula and the heartwarming story of the return of his pistol by his Confederate captor some thirty years after the war.
