At the chosen research site, probation and parole officers deal with heavy caseloads, changing laws, and internal stressors that are similar to other state run probation and parole agencies. The chosen site is unique in terms of its employee base because there are more female probation and parole officers than male officers. This quantitative study involved 94 probation and parole officers. Based on high turnover rates; the assumption was that parole officers are experiencing increasing responsibilities, increasing workloads, along with high burnout levels ultimately produce crossover stress outside of the workplace and thus negatively impact their quality of life. This study found that despite the risk of burnout and crossover stress, 69% of probation and parole officers plan to retire. The findings suggest that about 30% of participants say they are either undecided or definitely leaving before retirement. Analysis of the multiple factors such as job demands, supervisor support, coworker support, and job insecurity was significantly predictive of burnout (F(4,85) = 9.14, p

Book excerpt: Very few studies regarding burnout have specifically focused on women who work as correctional officers. This mixed-method study examined the experience of burnout among female corrections officers working in adult male prisons. The Maslach Burnout Inventory for Human Services used to quantify the prevalence of burnout among female corrections officers, indicated significant results. Additional data was gathered through individual interviews which revealed further information regarding perceptions of causes, consequences and personal experiences of burnout. Overall findings indicated many female correctional officers were experiencing burnout which impacted their ability to have a healthy work-life balance. They faced a variety of extreme challenges which could easily be compared to running through a gauntlet. Intervention programs and policy changes should be implemented by the organizational leadership to address and reduce burnout.

There is extensive literature examining job burnout and job satisfaction in many disciplines, including the field of corrections. Leadership literature examining the servant leadership model remains limited. The leadership literature suggests that probation and parole agencies operate through a traditional paramilitary command and control hierarchy of strict adherence to rules, policies, and procedures. The importance and significance of this study are that it examined the extent to which probation and parole leaders practiced and engaged in servant leadership qualities, such as meeting the needs of officers and examined its associations with job burnout and job satisfaction. This study utilized a correlational research design on a sample of probation and parole officers in a rural Iowa community corrections department. This study utilized the Servant Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ), Burnout Assessment Tool 2.0 (BAT), and the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) for data collection purposes.
