Book excerpt: "'As I sat cradling the man's head, with his blood and brains sticking to my hands, I heard a voice - my own voice. It was asking me something. Asking how I had ended up like this, desperate and lost among people who thought nothing of caving in a man's head and then standing back to watch him die.' Nick Bullock was a prison officer working in a maximum-security jail with some of Britain's most notorious criminals. Trapped in a world of aggression and fear, he felt frustrated and alone. Then he discovered the mountains. Making up for lost time, Bullock soon became one of Britain's best climbers, learning his trade in the mountains of Scotland and Wales, and travelling from Pakistan to Peru in his search for new routes and a new way of seeing the world - and ultimately an escape route from his life inside. Told that no one ever leaves the service - the security, the stability, the 'job for life' - Bullock focused his existence on a single goal: to walk free, with no shackles, into a mountain life."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: A half-Danish, half-German woman grows up in the midst of World War II before leaving Europe for America in this debut memoir. Born to a Danish mother and a German father in 1938 Berlin, Farrin's earliest memories include her mother's severe warning: "Don't say anything to anyone at any time." Later, she remembers their apartment being destroyed by a bomb in 1943. After the author's father went missing in the war, her mother took her, her little sister, Irene, and a baby brother affected by Down syndrome, Jurgen, to Denmark. There, they slowly adjusted to living the subtle stigma of their German connections until their mother found a new community in the Mormon Church. The fifteen-year-old author's mother soon secured visas and passage to America, and the teen's life was drastically changed yet again after they arrived in Salt Lake City. They eventually settled in California, living in a small cottage just off Hollywood Boulevard. Farrin's reluctance about America later gave way to ambition; she attended Stanford University and met her future husband, Jim. Together, they raised five children in nine different foreign cities. Although the daily trials of life as a foreigner and immigrant weighed on the author throughout her life, she continued to derive strength from her faith and her fiercely determined mother. She ably relates the complex character of her mother, and her account of her strange symbiosis with Mutti is equally engaging. Anyone with an interest in history or immigrant experiences will still find Farrin's tale to be thrilling. Kirkus Review

Book excerpt: Problems – of integration, failed political participation, and requests for various kinds of accommodation – seem to dominate the research on minority Muslims in Western nations. Beyond Accommodation offers a different perspective, showing how Muslim Canadians successfully navigate and negotiate their religiosity in the more mundane moments of their lives. Drawing on interviews with Muslims in Montreal and St. John’s, Selby, Barras, and Beaman examine moments in which religiosity is worked out. They critique the model of reasonable accommodation, which has been lauded internationally for acknowledging and accommodating religious and cultural differences. The authors suggest that it disempowers religious minorities by implicitly privileging Christianity and by placing the onus on minorities to make requests for accommodation. The interviewees show that informal negotiation occurs all the time; scholars, however, have not been paying attention. This book advances a new model for studying the navigation and negotiation of religion in the public sphere and presents an alternative picture of how religious difference is woven into the fabric of Canadian society.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on Sikh communities in east and northeast India. It studies settlements in Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur to understand the Indian Sikhs through the lens of their dispersal to the plains and hills far from Punjab. Drawing on robust historical and ethnographic sources such as official documents, media accounts, memoirs, and reports produced by local Sikh institutions, the author studies the social composition of the immigrants and surveys the extent of their success in retaining their community identity and recreating their memories of home at their new locations. He uses a nuanced notion of the internal diaspora to look at the complex relationships between home, host, and community. As an important addition to the study of Sikhism, this book fills a significant gap and widens the frontiers of Sikh studies. It will be indispensable for students and researchers of sociology and social anthropology, history, migration and diaspora studies, religion, especially Sikh studies, cultural studies, as well as the Sikh diaspora worldwide.

Gulf women are self-sufficient, generous, and can cope with almost anything that life and the environment throws at them: floods, drought, sickness, emergencies. Whether they are graziers, fisherwomen, ringers, women in tourism, aviation and education, Indigenous women or descendants from early women settlers, this powerful book gives these women a voice to tell their own stories. There are stories of new mothers on properties isolated and inaccessible for months in the wet season; women giving birth at home with only neighbours to assist; reminiscences from last century and World War II, and accounts of fishing in the Gulf in sometimes unimaginable conditions. From the kids wanting a baby croc for a pet to the terror of a snake bite with a flooded airstrip and impassable roads, these women treat the extraordinary events in their lives as just part of their remote way of life. Set in a world of vast landscapes, distance and merciless climate, Beyond the Outback contains riveting tales of the lives of the women who live, work and raise families in one of Australia's most isolated regions. It will be loved by readers of Sara Henderson, Toni Tapp Coutts and Terry Underwood.

In Britain, there is even consensus between the three major political parties that the approach should be continued and extended. A key issue, though, is what comes next for self- managing schools? Drawing on their work and experience in research consultancy, Caldwell and Spinks examine the way in which education is changing, and outline what is desirable and workable for schools today, with clear guidelines for policy-makers and practitioners. The focus is specifically on the school, the classroom, the student, and the future of learning in society. Practitioners will find this book immediately accessible and useful.

Book excerpt: On a world he doesn’t yet know is doomed, Lije, an astrophysicist, sits at a radar tracking station, tracking boring space junk. One night, he notices a satellite veering off course before disappearing into the darkness. Curious, he investigates and discovers a small black hole—and it’s getting closer. The Earth has maybe two weeks before it is swallowed. Years before, Lije’s life took a dark turn when Laura Bess, the love of his life, was lost in a plane crash. Little does he know, but this seemingly random discovery in the night sky holds the key to a happiness he never dared to dream he could know again. After his shift, as he’s grabbing a bite in a coffee shop, his lost love walks up and says hello. Laura Bess, it turns out, is alive—and living in an alternate reality. After Lije gets over his shock, Laura Bess explains that, using a skill she’s had since childhood, she was able to “step aside” from the crashing plane into one of the alternate universes she calls elsewhens—but she was trapped. In her new life, she finds work at a top-secret teleportation program, hoping to make her way back to Lije. When she finds the key, she bolts, and the elsewhen authorities think that she has stolen the technology. Now, Lije must rescue Laura from a sadistic security agent from her alternate universe. With the black hole closing in on his world, can they find a way to cross over to a third elsewhen before it’s too late?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is written by leading scientists in the field, who review the current state of our knowledge of tidal streams in the Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy, and in other nearby galaxies. The cosmological origins of dwarf galaxies and the physical processes by which they are tidally disrupted into streams and incorporated into galaxy halos are discussed. The techniques that have been used to identify tidal streams are presented and will be useful to researchers who would like to find substructures in the next generation of optical sky surveys, including Pan-STARRS and LSST. The methods that are currently under development to constrain both large scale distribution of dark matter in the Milky Way and the (small scale) lumpiness of the dark matter distribution are also explained. The authors also provide motivation for future spectroscopic surveys of Milky Way halo stars, which will aid both in the identification of tidal streams and the constraint of dark matter properties. This volume is aimed at graduate students who are beginning this field of research, but is also a resource for researchers who study tidal streams and related fields. In addition to presenting the physical processes by which tidal streams are created, it also reviews the current state of the observations and the progress towards utilizing these observations to constrain the distribution of dark matter in the Milky Way. The book will introduce anyone with a background in astrophysics to the field of tidal streams.
