Book Synopsis Stand Up, Fight Back by : Jeremy Burke
Download or read book Stand Up, Fight Back written by Jeremy Burke and published by Bookbaby. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stand Up, Fight Back is the story of little 9 year old boy in 4th grade being terrorized by bullies every day. It started on the school bus with verbal taunts by the bullies to all the kids. Everyday they systematically made their way around the bus teasing everyone. When it was my turn for ridicule, I tried to ignore them and hoped they would just go away. Eventually the bullies would push further and be more aggressive with their attacks to get a reaction. As they increased pressure, I would try to retreat further into my dark hole of emptiness to get away. This drove them more and more to hurt me. Eventually I caved and started to cry. It was a huge victory for the bullies to get someone to cry. As months went on the attacks became more frequent and also became physical. They would slap my head, flick my ears, punch and poke me. They would pull my shoes off and even throw them out the bus window. And the bullying made it's way off the bus and into school, the schoolyard and even out in public places. I couldn't get away. This book details the dark plight of bullying and abuse that goes on every day in schools all over the country. You hear all the details about how that little boy was systematically broken down into the darkest lows where his soul could go. I discuss the failures of the system along the way as I was being bullied. From the Bus Driver that saw it all, to the principal that heard first hand from my mother about how I looked getting off the bus being beaten to finally the bully's parents denying any wrong doing of their son. Many adults knew what was going on but none did much about it. I conclude the book with some details on how to fix this epidemic. It won't be easy and we'll never wipe it out completely. But we can take a stand against bullying, but we have to do it together. And we have to start now. The first step begins with the parents and ends with the child being bullied. Stand Up, Fight Back.
Book Synopsis By the Grace of the Game by : Dan Grunfeld
Download or read book By the Grace of the Game written by Dan Grunfeld and published by Triumph Books. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multi-generational family epic detailing history's only known journey from Auschwitz to the NBA When Lily and Alex entered a packed gymnasium in Queens, New York in 1972, they barely recognized their son. The boy who escaped to America with them, who was bullied as he struggled to learn English and cope with family tragedy, was now a young man who had discovered and secretly honed his basketball talent on the outdoor courts of New York City. That young man was Ernie Grunfeld, who would go on to win an Olympic gold medal and reach previously unimaginable heights as an NBA player and executive. In By the Grace of the Game, Dan Grunfeld, once a basketball standout himself at Stanford University, shares the remarkable story of his family, a delicately interwoven narrative that doesn't lack in heartbreak yet remains as deeply nourishing as his grandmother's Hungarian cooking, so lovingly described. The true improbability of the saga lies in the discovery of a game that unknowingly held the power to heal wounds, build bridges, and tie together a fractured Jewish family. If the magnitude of an American dream is measured by the intensity of the nightmare that came before and the heights of the triumph achieved after, then By the Grace of the Game recounts an American dream story of unprecedented scale. From the grips of the Nazis to the top of the Olympic podium, from the cheap seats to center stage at Madison Square Garden, from yellow stars to silver spoons, this complex tale traverses the spectrum of the human experience to detail how perseverance, love, and legacy can survive through generations, carried on the shoulders of a simple and beautiful game.

Book Synopsis The British Home Front and the First World War by : Hew Strachan
Download or read book The British Home Front and the First World War written by Hew Strachan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First World War required the mobilisation of entire societies, regardless of age or gender. The phrase 'home front' was itself a product of the war with parts of Britain literally a war front, coming under enemy attack from the sea and increasingly the air. However, the home front also conveyed the war's impact on almost every aspect of British life, economic, social and domestic. In the fullest account to-date, leading historians show how the war blurred the division between what was military and not, and how it made many conscious of their national identities for the first time. They reveal how its impact changed Britain for ever, transforming the monarchy, promoting systematic cabinet government, and prompting state intervention in a country which prided itself on its liberalism and its support for free trade. In many respects we still live with the consequences.

Download or read book Bullying in Schools written by Ken Rigby and published by Aust Council for Ed Research. This book was released on 2007 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bullying is now widely recognised as a serious problem that affects many children in schools. It can take many forms, including direct verbal and physical harassment and indirect forms such as deliberate exclusion and the targeting of individuals using cyber technology. Continual and severe bullying can cause both short term and long term damage, making it difficult for victims to form intimate relationships with others and for habitual bullies to avoid following a delinquent lifestyle and becoming perpetrators of domestic violence. Even though this type of abuse affects many of our school children, Ken Rigby believes there are grounds for optimism. This passionate and motivating book shows that there are ways of reducing the likelihood of bullying occurring in a school and effective ways of tackling cases when they do occur. Using up-to-date studies, Bullying in Schools helps us to understand the nature of bullying and why it so often takes place in schools. Importantly, it examines and evaluates what schools can do to promote more positive peer relationships within the school community and take effective and sustainable action to deal with problems that may arise. Teachers, parents, school leaders, policy makers, and health professionals will find it invaluable and empowering.
Book Synopsis Trauma and Recovery by : Judith Lewis Herman
Download or read book Trauma and Recovery written by Judith Lewis Herman and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, a leading clinical psychiatrist redefines how we think about and treat victims of trauma. A "stunning achievement" that remains a "classic for our generation." (Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., author of The Body Keeps the Score). Trauma and Recovery is revered as the seminal text on understanding trauma survivors. By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparable from its social and political context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war. Hailed by the New York Times as "one of the most important psychiatry works to be published since Freud," Trauma and Recovery is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand how we heal and are healed.
