Because when Perley Gates gets mad, people get hurt. Once every year, Perley Gates and his brothers lead the Triple-G crew on its annual cattle drive. It’s a treacherous journey along the Great Western Trail, with a herd of two-thousand cows on one side and many opportunities for trouble on the other. This year, trouble shows up in the form of a beautiful young woman, her little baby, and her bizarre traveling companion—a colorful old cuss who goes by the name of Possom Smith. They’re heading to a settlement called Butcher Bottom, and risking their necks to get there. Perley—being the gentleman he is—offers to escort the trio to their destination. But there are a few minor details they “forgot” to tell Perley . . . The woman is a widow whose husband had enemies. The old man is hiding a small fortune that might get them killed. And Perley is stuck in the middle trying to decide who’s good, who’s bad—and who deserves to die first . . . Live Free. Read Hard.

Book excerpt: The gangster, like the gunslinger, is a classic American character-and the gangster movie, like the Western, is one of the American cinema's enduring film genres. From Scarface to White Heat, from The Godfather to The Usual Suspects, from Once Upon a Time in America to Road to Perdition, gangland on the screen remains as popular as ever.In Bullets over Hollywood, film scholar John McCarty traces the history of mob flicks and reveals why the films are so beloved by Americans. As McCarty demonstrates, the themes, characters, landscapes, stories-the overall iconography-of the gangster genre have proven resilient enough to be updated, reshaped, and expanded upon to connect with even today's young audiences. Packed with fascinating behind-the-scenes anecdotes and information about real-life hoods and their cinematic alter egos, insightful analysis, and a solid historical perspective, Bullets over Hollywood will be the definitive book on the gangster movie for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a widespread belief, among both political scientists and government policymakers, that "democracies don't fight each other." Here Joanne Gowa challenges that belief. In a thorough, systematic critique, she shows that, while democracies were less likely than other states to engage each other in armed conflicts between 1945 and 1980, they were just as likely to do so as were other states before 1914. Thus, no reason exists to believe that a democratic peace will survive the end of the Cold War. Since U.S. foreign policy is currently directed toward promoting democracy abroad, Gowa's findings are especially timely and worrisome. Those who assert that a democratic peace exists typically examine the 1815-1980 period as a whole. In doing so, they conflate two very different historical periods: the pre-World War I and post-World War II years. Examining these periods separately, Gowa shows that a democratic peace prevailed only during the later period. Given the collapse of the Cold War world, her research calls into question both the conclusions of previous researchers and the wisdom of present U.S. foreign policy initiatives. By re-examining the arguments and data that have been used to support beliefs about a democratic peace, Joanne Gowa has produced a thought-provoking book that is sure to be controversial.

Book excerpt: A bank is held up and everything goes wrong. 5 people are shot, one dies, a pregnant woman loses her baby. But the robbers are caught and a conviction seems certain. When the trial takes place, the judge rules out much of the evidence, the defense attorney turns the entire event into a circus and the suspects become celebrities and walk out of court free. Two months later, they're both dead. Shot sniper style by someone who was an expert marksman using an experimental weapon - a weapon that can kill at over 2000 yards. Retired Minneapolis Homicide Detective Dan Neumann is called in because of his expertise in shooting. He quickly determines that the most likely suspect, Ben Harris, the dead woman's husband, has neither the skills nor demeanor to be a sniper. But if not Harris, then who did it? And when other bodies appear, Dan must race against the clock and the impending entry of the FBI into the chase-a chase that takes him from Minneapolis to Phoenix to Alaska in pursuit of the killer-a chase that winds up over Duluth Minnesota in a small plane being pursued by F-16s. This is the first work by Phil Rustad.

Eddie Drood here...well, not quite. Being a member of a secret-yet-legendary family of evil-battlers who have been shielding people from the darkest entities on Earth for ages can take its toll. So lately, I’ve been relaxing. Regrouping. Looking at things from a place of peace and quiet. After all, being dead does have its perks. Lucky for me my lovely witch Molly Metcalfe is able to pull me back to the mortal plane just in time for another disaster to befall the Drood clan and the world in general. It appears there is a Satanist conspiracy in the making. And I don’t mean your typical wear-black-eyeliner, mope-around-the-high-school, rebelling-against-daddy devil devotees. These Satanists are incredibly for real, extremely devoted to their dark lord, and dead serious about breaking down the gates of Hell to unleash...well, Hell. And the key to this is something called the “Great Sacrifice,” a horrific occurrence the likes of which humanity has never conceived—and will never survive. That is, unless an unlikely guardian angel leaps into the fray. Dammit...where did I put my wings and halo...?

People who have never felt the pain of defeat and agony of rejection, never been turned down over and over again yet kept on going, never lived out of a suitcase for weeks at a time traveling from airport to airport, dealing with overcrowded airplanes, navigating rental cars in strange cities, calling on pressured and short-tempered buyers and purchasing agents, up late wining and dining, only to leave the next morning on the 6:00 AM flight to do it all over again, wonder WHY WE DO IT AND LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT! People don't understand what it means to have the spirit of a patriot. Those timid souls who sit on the sidelines and complain should thank their lucky stars there are people like us who sell the goods and services that provide a safe environment where they can sit at their desk and collect their paycheck.

Book excerpt: Acclaimed as the Middle East’s "All Quiet on the Western Front" The first eye-witness account ever published of the 1948 Israeli War of Independence, this riveting memoir of a young Israeli soldier became an instant bestseller on publication in 1949, and is still recognized as the outstanding book of that war, in the tradition of Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front. First joining the Givati Brigade and later volunteering for "Samson’s Foxes", the legendary commando unit, Avnery took part in almost all the major battles on the Jerusalem and southern fronts. Written from the trenches, and from a military hospital bed, he offers an extraordinarily detailed account of the war, of fast-paced battles, and acts of extreme bravery, as well as the camaraderie and off-duty exploits of young men and women thrust into the front line. This is a gripping, sensitive, and at times deeply poignant account of the day-to-day brutalities of one of the most significant wars of our times.

Book excerpt: Decades ago, Malcolm X eloquently stated that communities have the legitimate right to defend themselves “by any means necessary” with any tool or tactic, including guns. This wide-ranging anthology uncovers the hidden histories and ideas of community armed self-defense, exploring how it has been used by marginalized and oppressed communities as well as anarchists and radicals within significant social movements of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Far from a call to arms, or a “how-to” manual for warfare, this volume offers histories, reflections, and questions about the role of firearms in small collective defense efforts and its place in larger efforts toward the creation of autonomy and liberation. Featuring diverse perspectives from movements across the globe, Setting Sights includes vivid histories and personal reflections from both researchers and those who participated in community armed self-defense. Contributors include Dennis Banks, Kathleen Cleaver, Mabel Williams, Subcomandante Marcos, Kristian Williams, George Ciccariello-Maher, Ashanti Alston, and many more.
