In recent years there has been a strong conviction throughout the territory served by Columbia Seminary that a re-location Of the institution was necessary. A hundred years ago Columbia was one Of the larger cities and was near the center Of the Presby terian population Of the Southeast. Since the development of the Gulf States and the shifting Of the center Of our constituency, it appeared necessary to remove the Seminary further to the west. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of Columbia Theological Seminary, Vol. 24: September, 1930 The election of Dr. Cartledge completes the faculty of the Seminary. Columbia has a carefully prepared, congenial and completely integrated faculty, maintaining in essentials unity; in non-essentials liberty; in all things charity. Dr. Cartledge comes to Columbia Seminary with as definite a conviction of the truth of historic Christianity, of New Testament supernaturalism, as the institution Offered his grandfather 85 years ago. His faith has faced the fires of naturalism, human ism, secularism and mechanism; in the critical crucible of today it has stood the test. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of Columbia Theological Seminary, Vol. 22: July, 1929 Egyptian, Syrian, Latin, etc. These versions bring the total manu script evidence into other thousands. No one scholar, however industrious, is able to cope with all the mass of New Testament evidence. One must build upon the labors of the other. Magnificent work has been done in the past. The most decisive labors in this department were performed be fore 1888 by those great textual scholars, Tischendorf, Tregelles, Westcott, Hort, and others. So well was this work done that Hort could write in his introduction to the edition of the New Testament published in 1881 by himself and Dr. Westcott, that the amount of what can in any sense be called substantial variation from the original words can hardly form more than a thousandth part of the entire text. God has been wonderfully good in making the text of our New Testament so sure to us. But New Testament students are not content to let the matter rest here. The work of Textual Criticism has continued since the time of Westcott and Hort. New manuscript evidence has been discovered, known manuscript evidence which was not at that time available has been compiled, and the world is waiting today for some scholar or group of schol ars to give the students of the New Testament a new edition of Tischendorf's monumental compilation of textual evidence, which will embody all more recent findings. Textual criticism is one of the most exact of sciences. It works with almost mathematical precision. Every minister ought to know at least the principles of Textual Criticism. He ought to know enough to be able to judge for himself exactly of what the New Testament books really consisted as they came from the hands of their authors. On the linguistic Side, the study of the New Testament has been progressing with the interest of a romance. The New Testa ment has a Jewish background; its authors were for the most part of the Hebrew race; but the whole of it was written in Greek. Jesus spoke for a native tongue the current Aramaic of Palestine, but the record of what He said has come down to us only in Greek. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbia Theological Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 9: July, 1916 N ow, when Columbia had ten to twenty students, the problem was a very easy one, but since the student/ body has risen to fifty and promises an increase to Sixty or more, it will be seen at once that the Seminary will be looked to to find, instead of to per year for student aid, something like to per year for student aid. Of course, not every candidate without exception needs $100 from the Seminary funds, and where they do not need it, it is not given, but in the majority of instances the candidates come from families of moderate means and their sessions and Presbyteries testify that they need $100, so that the Seminary must either find this $100 in the way of work which the student can do by which he may earn $100, or must find some benevolent individual who is willing to aid the candidate to this extent, or must out of its own funds provide the $100. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbia Theological Seminary Bulletin, Vol. 18: July, 1925 The graduating class, as they presented themselves to receive their diplomas, were evidently stirred by the deep est emotions of a young minister's soul. Realizing that school days are over, that now they must take their place and assume their full responsibility for leadership in the church and community, these young men felt, as they could not have felt before, what a high privilege it is to be a minister of the Cross. There before the altar, where in days gone by many of our truly great and useful ministers have with high resolve pledged themselves to a worthy ministry, these young ministers, within their own hearts, renewed their vows of loyalty and allegiance to their Mas ter, and pledged to Him faithfulness in the vocation to which they are called. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin Columbia Theological Seminary, Vol. 29: July, 1936 It is by no means an easy thing to define the meaning Of the term, education. The process Of education is not simple in itself, nor are the aims of all education the same. Hence it is not strange that different men have given varying descriptions Of the process and diverse statements of its purpose. In the last analysis, however, we can hardly do better than to go back to the simple root meaning Of the word from which our term has been derived, and to see educa tion as simply a leading out - the guiding or drawing of an individual into the way which leads to greater fullness Of life, whether that life be physical or mental or spiritual.
