Book Synopsis May It Fill Your Soul by : Timothy Rice
Download or read book May It Fill Your Soul written by Timothy Rice and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994-07-13 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this vivid musical ethnography, Timothy Rice documents and interprets the history of folk music, song, and dance in Bulgaria over a seventy-year period of dramatic change. From 1920 to 1989, Bulgaria changed from a nearly medieval village society to a Stalinist planned industrial economy to a chaotic mix of capitalist and socialist markets and cultures. In the context of this history, Rice brings Bulgarian folk music to life by focusing on the biography of the Varimezov family, including the musician Kostadin and his wife Todora, a singer. Combining interviews with his own experiences of learning how to play, sing and dance Bulgarian folk music, Rice presents one of the most detailed accounts of traditional, aural learning processes in the ethnomusicological literature. Using a combination of traditionally dichotomous musicological and ethnographic approaches, Rice tells the story of how individual musicians learned their tradition, how they lived it during the pre-Communist era of family farming, how the tradition changed with industrialization brought under Communism, and finally, how it flourished and evolved in the recent, unstable political climate. This work—complete with a compact disc and numerous illustrations and musical examples—contributes not only to ethnomusicological theory and method, but also to our understanding of Slavic folklore, Eastern European anthropology, and cultural processes in Socialist states.

Book Synopsis Bulgarian Harmony by : Kalin S. Kirilov
Download or read book Bulgarian Harmony written by Kalin S. Kirilov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth study of the Bulgarian harmonic system is long overdue. More than two decades since the Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares choir was awarded a Grammy (1990), there is no scholarly study of the captivating sounds of Bulgarian vertical sonorities. Kalin Kirilov traces the gradual formation of a unique harmonic system that developed in three styles of Bulgarian music: village music from the 1930s to the 1990s, wedding music from the 1970s to 2000, and choral arrangements (obrabotki) - creations of the socialist period (1944-1989), popularized by Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. Kirilov classifies the different approaches to harmony and situates them in their historical and cultural contexts, establishing new systems for analysis. In the process, he introduces a new system for the categorization of scales. Kirilov argues that the ready-made concepts that are frequently forced onto Bulgarian music - ‘westernization’, ‘socialist’ or ‘Middle Eastern influence’, are not only outdated but also too vague to be of use in understanding the sophisticated modal and harmonic systems found in Bulgarian music. As an insider who has performed, composed and arranged this music for 30 years, Kirilov is uniquely qualified to interpret it for an international audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tár is a plucked string instrument, popularly known as the long-necked lute, traditionally played in Iran, Azerbaijan, and Central Asia. It has a distinctive sound and is played with a small plectrum made of wood or tortoise shell. The body of the tár is traditionally carved from a single piece of wood, and its neck has 25 strings arranged in five groups of five. Four of the five groups are tuned in unison, while the fifth group is tuned in octaves. The tár has historically been used in a variety of musical genres, ranging from classical Persian music to folk and popular music in Azerbaijan. There are several variations of the tár, including the Azerbaijani tár, which has a slightly different shape and tuning than the Persian tár. Similarly, the Central Asian dotar is a two-stringed version of the instrument. The tár has become known worldwide, and it is now played in Western classical concerts and world music concerts. The instrument originated in Central Asia, and it is believed to have been derived from an earlier instrument known as the dombra. The tár has become an integral part of the culture and music of Iran, Azerbaijan, and Central Asia, with many famous musicians having played the instrument over the centuries.
