Book excerpt: The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009, holds important lessons for United States climate policy. A one-time infusion of funding given primarily to local governments to for the purpose of reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, the policy had important but uneven effects. Most recipients were able to show progress on energy efficiency goals to meet program requirements. But communities with pre-existing interest in and experience with climate and energy programs tended to multiply the effects of the funding, using it to launch long-term efforts or prove concepts in order to secure further funding and support. The dissertation shows the value of communities' participation in voluntary policy initiatives related to climate and energy, as municipalities with even a small amount of related experience were better positioned to turn a one-time infusion of federal funding into long-lasting programs.

This book was released on 2009-10-26 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to use technology to effectively market your private practice. Building and maintaining a private practice today requires initiative, creativity, and a willingness to adapt new tools, technologies, and techniques to your business. As a therapist, and a small business owner of a private practice, you face the challenges of fluctuating market trends, infrastructure inefficiencies, seismic changes in demographic populations, complex reimbursement systems, and technological advances which alter practice patterns. Your “therapist side” may be reluctant to think of yourself as a businessperson; however, if you are to keep offering your valuable services, you owe it to yourself and your clients to build the most effective and efficient practice possible. To do so, you need to take advantage of the latest technology. Tracy Todd presents a number of technologies that will help you build, maintain, and expand your practice. He clearly walks you through the (surprisingly easy) process of creating your own Web site, highlighting the usefulness of features such as online scheduling and payment systems. He also provides overviews of podcasting, videocasting, blogs, and electronic file management, pointing out the benefits of each, and how you can go about applying these tools to your practice. The result is a book that will help you streamline your administrative duties, while expanding your clinical reach—thus helping your practice thrive.

The authors show how to target key areas of language and literacy development across the entire school day, including whole-group and small-group activities, center time, transitions, and outdoor play. Detailed examples in every chapter illustrate what effective instruction and assessment look like in three distinct settings: a school-based pre-kindergarten, a Head Start center with many English language learners, and a private suburban preschool. Helpful book lists, charts, and planning tools are featured, including reproducible materials.

Book excerpt: Education management can seem like a very complex system and topic to examine, and this is the reason for the text. Everything in the text follows three streams of research: (a) sociology, (b) political science, and (c) economics. These three fields are interconnected when trying to improve schools and to be a positive leader in the realm of education management. There is no defining definition of educational management since its essence encompasses these diverse disciplinessociology, political science, and economics. As this text will prove, the purpose of educational management is to bring students and teachers under positive conditions so high academic achievement can take place. This research looked at our education system and its origins. This text is written for policy-makers, curriculum designers, principals, heads of departments, and deans of colleges who can provide professional development to their staff. Staff will be empowered with this compassionate student-centered pedagogy that can enhance their teaching and their students performance. This text is also organized in a way that can be easily accessible to parents. Parents who care so deeply about their child but may not know where to start, with long work days and overtime and not having time to truly understand complex systems like education. I am certain that the dedicated and passionate parent can benefit from these findings and gain confidence in student-teacher interviews, no longer intimidated by schools, teachers, vice principals, and principals but can see how true change can happen for their child. This text can help them plan and avoid as many obstacles as possible in education for their child, making it easier so that their child can soar throughout their high school journey, postsecondary school, graduate school, and in their career of choice in the future. This is the intent of the research herein, and with hope and certainty, this research will achieve all these lofty aims.

Book excerpt: Published in partnership with the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students. Analysis of bachelor’s degree completion suggests that only about a third of college graduates attend a single institution from start to finish. More than one quarter earn college credits from three or more schools before completing a degree. For most, these student-defined pathways lead to increased time-to-degree and higher costs. Many will simply drop out long before crossing the finish line. Ensuring college completion and success requires an understanding of the evolving nature of transfer transitions and a system-wide approach that reaches beyond two-year and four-year institutions to include high schools participating in dual enrollment programs and military college initiatives. A new edited collection offers insight into institutional and statewide partnerships that create clearly defined pathways to college graduation and career success for all students.
