Book excerpt: We easily assume that the political systems of New Deal America and Fascist Italy were poles apart, but this fascinating exploration of the "new towns" of the 1930s argues persuasively to the contrary. Diane Ghirardo reveals that the planned communities of the New Deal, from Greenbelt towns to migrant worker camps, had close parallels in Italy and that new town policies in the United States and Italy were startlingly similar. In each country the central government tried to help solve massive unemployment problems in part by adopting essentially conservative designs to move impoverished citizens back to the land. The settlers were to flee the terrors of the Depression in an image borrowed from the past: the traditional nuclear family diligently at work on its own plot of ground, uninvolved in strikes or demonstrations. Recognizing that architectural and planning history are inseparable from the study of politics and social movements, Ghirardo uses the new town ideal as a window to view American and Italian social and economic policies. As she examines specific towns and settlements in each country, she shows that they were meant to remove their inhabitants not only from the "wickedness" of the city but also from contagious notions about revolution and radical social change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How insights from the social sciences, including social psychology and economics, can improve the design of online communities. Online communities are among the most popular destinations on the Internet, but not all online communities are equally successful. For every flourishing Facebook, there is a moribund Friendster—not to mention the scores of smaller social networking sites that never attracted enough members to be viable. This book offers lessons from theory and empirical research in the social sciences that can help improve the design of online communities. The authors draw on the literature in psychology, economics, and other social sciences, as well as their own research, translating general findings into useful design claims. They explain, for example, how to encourage information contributions based on the theory of public goods, and how to build members' commitment based on theories of interpersonal bond formation. For each design claim, they offer supporting evidence from theory, experiments, or observational studies.

How do some sites, such as America Online, EBay, and GeoCities, develop into Internet communities with loyal followings and regular repeat traffic? How can Web page designers and developers create sites that are vibrant and rewarding? Amy Jo Kim, author of Community Building on the Web and consultant to some of the most successful Internet communities, is an expert at teaching how to design sites that succeed by making new visitors feel welcome, rewarding member participation, and building a sense of their own history. She discusses important design strategies, interviews influential Web community-builders, and provides the reader with templates and questionnaires to use in building their own communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical guide shows you what really does (and doesn't) contribute to community building success. It reveals 28 keys to help you build community more effectively and efficiently. You won't find another single report that pulls out common lessons from across community building initiatives about what works. You can use this report to find out what community characteristics contribute to successful community building, make sure key processes such as communications and technical assistance are in place, determine if community leaders or organizers have essential qualities such as a relationship of trust and flexibility, and evaluate the likely success of a proposed project or get a struggling effort back on track. Examples, definitions, and a detailed bibliography make this report even more valuable. Wilder Research Center scoured the literature, contacted resource centers, and spoke with community development experts across the country. The result is concrete, understandable research based on real-life experiences. The 28 factors in this report are grouped by: 1) characteristics of the community, 2) characteristics of the community building process, and 3) characteristics of community building organizers. Detailed descriptions and case examples of how each factor plays out are followed by practical questions you can use to assess your work. In addition to the factors, you also get working definitions for community, community building, and many other terms; a list of resources and contacts in the field; an explanation of how the research was done; and a complete bibliography of all the studies used in this report. Now you can save time looking for best-practice information. With this concise report, you've got the tools to help your community building work succeed!
