It presents readers promising directions for change and areas that need revision based on new research findings and the integration of emerging theoretical models that show considerable promise in this field. . . . The material in this book should help us construct a better, safer vehicle for the treatment of sex offenders in the new millennium." –from the Foreword by G. Alan Marlatt, University of Washington It is estimated that relapse prevention methods are employed in more than 90% of all North American sex offender treatment programs (of which there are more than 2,000). Comparable statistics are true in most industrialized countries around the world. Over the last decade a great deal has been learned about the treatment of sexual offenders, and particularly about relapse prevention. This sourcebook provides clinicians with the most current, practical information about working with sex offenders to prevent relapse. It reflects the advances and insights of the past decade since the publication of Relapse Prevention with Sex Offenders, focusing on the major reconceptualizations, revisions, and innovations that will chart treatment programs for the first decade of the new millennium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From experts on working with court-mandated populations, this book shows how motivational interviewing (MI) can help offenders move beyond resistance or superficial compliance and achieve meaningful behavior change. Using this evidence-based approach promotes successful rehabilitation and reentry by drawing on clients' values, goals, and strengths--not simply telling them what to do. The authors clearly describe the core techniques of MI and bring them to life with examples and sample dialogues from a range of criminal justice and forensic settings. Of crucial importance, the book addresses MI implementation in real-world offender service systems, including practical strategies for overcoming obstacles. This book is in the Applications of Motivational Interviewing series, edited by Stephen Rollnick, William R. Miller, and Theresa B. Moyers.

The key issue will be motivating offenders to commit themselves to treatment, and to maintain their motivation trough the therapeutic programme and thereafter, on release. This is the first book to tackle the subject of motivating offenders in therapeutic programmes and as such, will prove an invaluable resource for forensic practitioners. * Written by some of the top clinical and forensic practitioners and researchers in offender rehabilitation * There is a real demand for a book on this subject as a result of changes in criminal justice policy and in mental health provision Part of the Wiley Series in Forensic Clinical Psychology

Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex offenders, and in particular paedophiles, have been the subject of much political and media attention, producing intensive debates about the best way of dealing with them. This book explores these issues, evaluating the measures in use or being considered, including drug treatment, MAPPA, the use of the Sex Offender Register, restorative justice techniques, and treatment programmes. It is concerned with high-risk sex offenders both when they are sentenced to a community order, and also when they are released back into the community after a custodial sentence. The introductory section opens with a discussion on how terms such as paedophilia are constructed and viewed, and then looks at how government policy regarding sex offending has developed over recent years. Section two looks at issues concerned with risk management, questioning whether enough is being done to monitor the risk that high-risk offenders pose when released into society; whilst section three, on risk reduction covers the main methods of treatment, including sex offender treatment programmes, pharmacotherapy (chemical castration) and restorative and reintegration techniques. Section Four focuses on specific offender groups; including female sexual offenders, sexual harm by youth, mentally disordered sexual offenders and intellectual disabled offenders. These assess in what ways these offenders are different to the 'norm' and look at how we should be dealing and treating these differences. The final section looks at social and moral responsibilities, including the patterns, prevention and protection of cyber-sex offences and media constructions of and reactions to paedophilia. In the final chapter the concept of dignity is addressed and the balance between community protection and the rights of sex offenders involved is evaluated.
