MUCH has been written and published about the construction of the Tabernacle and the Temple, but modern investigators have naturally acquired a habit of studying all the theories that have been propounded by their predecessors, whereupon they select from these traditional interpretations what they deem most probable. Dr. Epstein, however, forms an exception to this rule. He belongs to an old generation. He is by birth an Israelite and has grown up in the old-fashioned way of Jewish tradition. He reads and speaks Hebrew fluently, and is as familiar with the Biblical text as devout modern Christians frequently are with the King James version. His interpretation is based upon the original Hebrew, and he has com- pared his views with other explanations only after having formed his own opinion. Dr. Epstein contributed to The Monist an article on "The Mosaic Names of God" (July, 1907), wherein he expressed his opinion (p. 393) that the author of the 110th Psalm shows his belief in a Christ when saying, "The Lord said unto my Lord!" This is a straw in the wind explanatory of his conversion to Christianity, and it drew upon him some criticism from his former coreligionists. The problem of the nature of the Tabernacle is independent of the question whether or not the Tabernacle existed. It may have been a pure invention as is now commonly believed by critics. The problem of the exegetist is above all an expression of the meaning of the text and what the author of these passages meant to describe, and here Dr. Epstein is the best man to give us a correct answer. Even among rabbis the knowledge of Hebrew as a living tongue has become rare, and here we have an unbiased rendering of the text as it impresses itself upon a man who has grown up in the language of holy writ. A test of the value of Dr. Epstein's conception seems to be that the construction of the Tabernacle ap- pears not only feasible but practical....

God gave Moses detailed directions for the construction of the Tabernacle, a large cloth tent, and all its wooden, cloth, iron, brass, silver and golden fittings and furnishings. The Tabernacle remained the principal House of God in Israel for approximately five hundred years. After David died, Solomon began to build the Temple during the fourth year of his reign as king. The construction was completed during the eleventh year of his reign. Besides being made of sturdier materials and being immobile, the biggest differences between the Tabernacle and Solomon's Temple were in the sizes and quantities of the Temple's elements. Solomon's Temple was used for a period of approximately four hundred and twenty years before it was destroyed by Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar when he attacked and destroyed Jerusalem. Thereafter, Israel had neither Temple nor Tabernacle for seventy years, until Persian King Cyrus attacked and defeated the Babylonians and gave Ezra the Israelite scribe permission to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple there. This Second Temple is often called the Temple of Zerubbabel, as he was a prominent Israelite who supervised its construction. During the time of Jesus, the temple rebuilt by Zerubbabel was repaired and expanded by King Herod. It was that temple to which Jesus went on many occasions when he was in Jerusalem.
