Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom collaborated with his blind dog on Stay Put? Make a Move?, so his 6th book breaks all the rules. The dog suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. (They needed to keep track with numbered paragraphs. Blame the dog.) Stay Put? covers more than just their lives and their locales; this is a narrative chock-full of cocktail party historical and pop culture facts. It’s about the lives and events of the famous and less known friends, people, places and events that touched Tom’s life. How did Tom’s High School Campaign Manager stop the Florida vote recount, resulting in chicken-hearted, pig-headed, hoodwinking, papa-rebellious, childish, unapologetic (now ‘feeling comfortable’) George Bush Jr. getting elected President? And how has it affected all of us? After graduating from Cornell University, Tom worked with Japan’s two top union movement leaders, Ohta Kaoru (who invented Shunto), and Yamagishi Akira (who founded the united RENGO labour union). There he had the lucky start of developing his vision to build world economies with better woman/manpower management. After a few serious parts, Stay Put? takes on more light-hearted topics. A drive from London to Katmandu; Marilyn Monroe’s marriage in Waccabuc; departing Waccabuc to capture Benedict Arnold; other lake and mountain facts; Robert Reich leading author’s John Jay High School; an impressive 39-year-old Donald Rumsfeld; Donald Trump; Bruce Willis; Richard Gere nearby; the Salem Witch Trials; the first half-black non-native New Yorker with Manhattan to himself for 11 years before the Dutch came; the Christmas Ghost; Bill Clinton at the Kill Bill restaurant; Tom singing ‘Otoko wa Tsurai Yo’ to Tora-san; Chiang Kai-shek and a talk with Princess Diana. Stay Put? features hundreds of other true stories – many that you will know something about. Where to live? Who to live with? What to do? What to change? What to think? What stories do you have to tell? And how many changed history for all of us?

Book excerpt: The site for the tennis court should have a perfectly unobstructed space of not less than 60 by 120 feet, and its location should be as conveniently near the house as the topography and landscape architecture will permit. The game is one that is best played in summer in semi-négligée attire, and if the courts are within a reasonable distance of the house there will be no necessity for lockers and dressing rooms. If possible a broad terrace should come between the court and the house, or, if it can be connected with the garden by a broad walk, so much the better. If the country residence is perched on the top or side of a hill, it may be necessary to make the court some distance away on account of the lack of sufficient level area. The architectural features of the house and grounds should in every instance be carefully considered in designing tennis courts, and if the latter are made to harmonize with the former the result is very pleasing to the eye.

Kirsten Hextrum reveals the dynamic relationship between the state, elite groups, private entities, educational institutions, and athletic organizations that concentrate opportunities in white suburban communities. Thus, college sports allow white, middle-class athletes to accelerate their advantages through admission to elite universities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dark days for Hal Andrews, New York artist and scion of an eccentric New England family. His cat has just died in a plunge from his apartment window. His brother Beck, manic-depressive and hopelessly nostalgic, is about to marry Lisa Lyman, heiress to the Family Wipes fortune and certifiably the world's most abominable girl. Their sister Fishie, an Olympic swimming champion who uses her television appearances to berate Hal, has recently shaved her head bald. And their father is withholding Hal's inheritance until he becomes more responsible, or at least until he's sixty-five. Hal's artwork clutters the floors of his girlfriend's apartment and does about as much for his putative gallery. Hoping for a genius grant and settling for a decrepit dog and a derisive girlfriend, Hal's optimism begins to wane as he descends into a moody twilit world of obscure urban horror. Therefore, when a wrong number from out of town walks into his life, the situation is grim. Mary-Ann Beavers and her hostile brother arrive in New York via Greyhound, in search of celebrities and success, both rare commodities back home in Patent, Texas. She snaps her chewing gum and writes wretched poetry; her brother has bad teeth and a temper to match. While Mary-Ann stalks Liza Minnelli in the supermarket and treasures the autograph of Dustin Hoffman's agent's sister, a darkness that lasts for days falls over Hal's new but awful apartment. There is light, however, at the end of the tunnel, and Hal, in spite of himself, will bask in it. Make-Believe Ballrooms captures the true contemporary dilemma in this tale of Hal's decline and rehabilitation in much-too-postmodern New York.

Book excerpt: "Coming Up the Hard Way "Sometimes, in a tough neighborhood, where there is no way for a kid to prove himself except by playing games and fighting, you've got to establish a record for being able to look out for yourself before they will leave you alone. If they think you're an easy mark, they will all look to build up their own reputations by beating up on you. I learned always to get in the first punch." Althea Gibson, 1958 Four days after her historic victory at Wimbledon in July 1957, Althea Gibson sat at the head table between her parents during a luncheon held in her honor at New York City's famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Wearing a dress of red and blue silk with a corsage pinned to her lapel, she listened as local officials sang her praises. Gibson was "an American girl," "a real lady," and "a wonderful ambassador ... [and] saleswoman" for the country, they said. Speaker after speaker reached for superlatives and generalities to pay tribute to Gibson for rising improbably from "the sidewalks of New York," in the words of Mayor Robert F. Wagner, to winning the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. The commissioner of the department of commerce and public events cut closest to the truth with six words: "She came up the hard way""--
