Book excerpt: One of iconic Africa's Big Five, the African buffalo is the largest African bovine or antelope that occurs throughout most of sub-Sahara and in a wide range of ecosystems from savanna to rainforest. The African buffalo is also one of the most successful large African mammals in terms of abundance and biomass. This species thus represents a powerful model to enhance our understanding of African biogeography and wildlife conservation, ecology and management. Edited by four researchers experienced in different aspects of the African buffalo's biology, this volume provides an exhaustive compilation of knowledge on an emblematic species that stands out as an important component of African natural and human ecosystems. It delivers a global view of the African buffalo and all known aspects of its ecology and management. This book will appeal to students, scholars, scientists and wildlife managers as well as those enthusiastic about the charismatic species. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 49. Chapters: African buffalo, African bush elephant, African striped weasel, Asian house shrew, Banded mongoose, Bat-eared fox, Black rhinoceros, Bongo (antelope), Bushbuck, Common duiker, Eastern chimpanzee, Glover Allen's dasymys, Grant's zebra, Greater kudu, Ground pangolin, Hartebeest, Kirk's dik-dik, Klipspringer, Lycaon pictus, Masai Giraffe, Roan antelope, Sable antelope, Serval, Sitatunga, Steenbok, Warthog, Waterbuck, Yellow-backed duiker. Excerpt: The western or lowland bongo, Tragelaphus eurycerus eurycerus, is a herbivorous, mostly nocturnal forest ungulate and among the largest of the African forest antelope species. Bongos are characterised by a striking reddish-brown coat, black and white markings, white-yellow stripes and long slightly spiralled horns. Indeed, bongos are the only Tragelaphid in which both sexes have horns. Bongos have a complex social interaction and are found in African dense forest mosaics. The lowland bongo faces an ongoing population decline and the IUCN Antelope Specialist Group considers the western or lowland bongo, T. eurycerus eurycerus, to be Near Threatened on the conservation status scale. The eastern or mountain bongo, T. eurycerus isaaci, of Kenya has a coat even more vibrant than that of T. eurycerus eurycerus. The mountain bongo is only found in the wild in one remote region of central Kenya. The mountain bongo is classified by the IUCN Antelope Specialist Group as Critically Endangered with more specimens in captivity than in the wild. In 2000, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) upgraded the bongo to a Species Survival Plan (SSP) Participant and in 2006 named the Bongo Restoration to Mount Kenya Project to its list of the Top Ten Wildlife Conservation Success Stories of the year. However, in 2013 it seems these successes have been negated with reports that there are...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book written in English about two of Eastern Europe’s premier hunting destinations. The book is animated by the author’s desire to share this little-known sporting paradise with educated hunters. The chapters detail game he has hunted over the past three decades, including stag, boar, roebuck, bear, wolf, chamois, capercaillie, pheasants, mouflon sheep, and ducks in areas that regularly produce world-class trophies and yet remain unknown to even the most experienced hunters. The hunting culture and traditions of Romania and Hungary, which figured so prominently in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, profoundly influenced the development of European, and international, hunting. By sharing the latest facts about the finest hunting areas, hunting seasons, and firearms and equipment, the author hopes to awaken an appreciation for all the best that Hungary and Romania offer sportsmen. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for hunters and firearms enthusiasts. We publish books about shotguns, rifles, handguns, target shooting, gun collecting, self-defense, archery, ammunition, knives, gunsmithing, gun repair, and wilderness survival. We publish books on deer hunting, big game hunting, small game hunting, wing shooting, turkey hunting, deer stands, duck blinds, bowhunting, wing shooting, hunting dogs, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
