Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buddhism in Translations: Passages Selected From the Buddhist Sacred Books and Translated From the Original Pali Into EnglishTnn volumes of the harvard oriental series are printed at the expense of funds given to Harvard University by Henry Clarke Warren (1854 of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The third volume, War ren's Buddhism, is a noble monument to his courage in adversity and to his scholarship. The Series, as a contribution to the work of enabling the Occident to understand the Orient, is the fruit of an enlightened liber ality which now seems to have been an almost prophetic anticipation on his part of a great political need.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Buddha I have done my best to expose both the theoretical and practical doctrines of Buddha, all in all according to the authorized Chinese Text. I should have published the classification of Buddha's Personality, ' had it not been too voluminous and so complicated for this small book. It may not be altogether useless for those readers who can read the Japanese original as well as the English translation to state here that the translators have given a few small turns and contractions to my original, with out missing the spirit of the original. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the True Sect of Buddhism When I was requested by the Society to undertake the translation, the time allowed was so short that I fear the work is but imperfectly done. I have made a free rather than a literal translation; in some parts amplifying the original and in other parts curtailing it, so as to make the work more intelligible to foreigners. I am very much indebted to Mr. E. B. Lambert for his kind revision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1894 this book was one of the first introductions of Buddhism to the West. In particular the topic is approached from a Christian point of view, showing parallels between the teachings of the two faiths and between their respective holy figures. This edition contains the beautiful original images and is often recommended to Christians wishing to learn more about the teachings of Buddhism. Paul Carus had an obvious and deep respect for Buddhism and other Eastern traditions and that shines through in this work. It contains fine descriptions of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, as well as many parables of the Buddha. Where documents have been translated, while they would doubtless have been translated differently these days, they have been done so with great sensitivity. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Chinese Translation of the Buddhist Tripitaka: The Sacred Canon of the Buddhists in China and Japan This is a complete Catalogue of the Chinese Translation of the Buddhist Tripitaka, the Sacred Canon of the Buddhists in China and Japan. It contains not only the titles of 1662 different works (of which 342, however, are miscellaneous works), but also the names of the authors and translators, together with their dates. The arrangement and classification of these works are the same as in the original Chinese Catalogue, i. E. N o. 1662. Notes taken from various sources are added under each title with their full references. A list of the principal authorities consulted by me will be found on p. Xxxii. Though I gladly and gratefully acknowledge the assistance received from my predecessors, there still remain such difficulties as were pointed out by the Rev. J. Summers in his Descriptive Catalogue of the Chinese, Japanese, and Manchu books in the Library of the India Office, 1872 (p. Iv), when he says 'the title of a [chinese] hook is often untranslatable; the author's name is frequently out of sight, and has to be sought for in some obscure corner or work; the date of the publication is alike often doubtful, and in the case of Buddhist Literature the identification of the Chinese title with the Sanskrit original is sufficiently troublesom This quotation will to a certain extent explain the imperfection of my own work, for which I have to crave the indulgence of those who may use it. My principal object in making this compilation has been to show the original, though it may be not quite scientific, arrangement Of this great Collection of our Sacred Canon, made in China under the Min dynasty, A. D. 1368 - 1644. A copy of the Japanese edition of this Chinese Collection, published in Japan in A. D. 1678 - 1681, is now in the Library of the India Office in London. 'it is this copy of the Sacred Books, ' says the Rev. S. Beal, that (in 1874) I requested His Excellency Iwakura Tomomi to procure for the India Ofiice Library. In 1875 the entire Tripitaka was received at the India Office, in fulfilment of the promise made by the Japanese Immediately after this, Mr. Beal prepared a Catalogue of the books for practical purposes which was completed in June 1876, within the time of six months 3.
