Book excerpt: This proceedings is based on a joint meeting of the two IUFRO (International Union of Forestry Research Organizations) Working Parties, Somatic Cell Genetics (S2.04-07) and Molecular Genetics (S2.04-06) held in Gent, Belgium, 26-30 September, 1995. Although a joint meeting of the two Working Parties had been discussed in the past, this was the first such meeting that became a successful reality. In fact this meeting provided an excellent forum for discussions and interactions in forest bioteclUlology that encouraged the participants to vote for a next joint meeting. In the past decade rapid progress has been made in the somatic cell genetics and molecular genetics of forest trees. In order to cover recent developments in the broad area of biotechnology, the scientific program of the meeting was divided into several sessions. These included somatic embryogenesis, regeneration, transformation, gene expression, molecular markers, genome mapping, and biotic and abiotic stresses. The regeneration of plants, produced by organogenesis or somatic embryogenesis, is necessary not only for mass cloning of forest trees, but also for its application in genetic transformation and molecular biology. Although micropropagation has been achieved from juvenile tissues in a number of forest tree species, in vitro regeneration from mature trees remains a challenging problem in most hardwoods and conifers. The mechanisms involved in the transition from juvenile to mature phase in woody plants are poorly understood. This transition can now be investigated at the molecular level.

Book excerpt: The deadly hantavirus has killed hundreds of Native Americans, so when a reputable pharmaceutical company claims to have developed a vaccine against the deadly disease, it should be good news. But when ImmuVac asks Dr. Isabel McLain to conduct a clinical trial of the vaccine on the Blackfeet reservation in Browning, Montana, the proposal gets a distinctly mixed response from both her and the suspicious Blackfeet. Is the new drug truly safe, or are the Blackfeet being used as human guinea pigs? Indian activist Monty Four Bear fears the worst, but Dr. McLain stakes her reputation on the trial's safety. Having taken over the poorly-funded reservation clinic after the catastrophic failure of her marriage, Isabel has fought a long, hard struggle to gain the trust of the wary Blackfeet residents of the reservation. She knows she risks everything she's accomplished by endorsing ImmuVac's clinical trial, but she's willing to take that chance if it means developing a weapon against the hantavirus. But when corporate greed makes for questionable science, whom can Isabel truly trust with her life and her career --and the lives of the Blackfeet? Book excerpt: A simple lab test that could customize chemotherapy to the patient and save lives. Surely such a breakthrough would be hustled into widespread use? Not in A Test of Survival, and not in the real-life story that inspired it. Money is certainly at stake, as is status, power, loyalty to petrified ideas, and the fate of half a million people dying of cancer every year. Dr. Gus Ephraim toils for decades at the fringes of cancer research, stubbornly awaiting validation of his tumor test. He risks his marriage and more when he sets up a new lab in the Midwest, too close to wife number one and to Dr. Lyman Deering, renowned leader in the cancer establishment. As damage to his reputation, his livelihood, and his family piles up . Gus stops playing by the rules. Reluctantly, and prodded by an unlikely band of allies, he takes on the powers-that-be and their cash-register vision of cancer treatment in America. Martin Herzog was one of those people who adamantly opposed any notion of a spiritual life..until the day he got a very timely surprise visit by an angel named Dominic. The angel saves his life and takes him on a tour of the spiritual realm and makes it possible for him to see the earth just as angels see it. Martin discovers a world that was twice as crowded...a world where angels and demons lived side by side with humans and worked through them to get their work accomplished. Much to his surprise though, he finds a world that his heavily dominated by evil forces. He builds up a strong hatred toward demons and accepts to return Dominic's favor by taking on a mission to stop a large development near the village of Estes Park in the state of Colorado. Throughout the eight-month tenure, his mission becomes more adventurous. Danger creeps up and surrounds him like a fiery maze. With a threat against his life and the likelihood of being drawn into a nasty war against brutal and viciously organized crime families, will Martin Herzog decide to stay and fight the demons and their human allies or will he return home and leave his mission unfinished?

Book excerpt: Reading Hunting, the Way it Was is like lingering around a campfire 50 miles deep in the Snag River country, or at Wolf Lake, and hearing the fascinating and entertaining stories told by Bud and LeNora about hunting in Alaska's bygone era. It is the true tales about one of Alaska's best fair-chase guides, of horse-wranglers and assistant guides, and of pilots who flew clients in their fragile Super Cubs to the frozen arctic for polar bear and to the windy Alaska Peninsula for the big browns -- and all the other big game Alaska had to offer brave hunters. Hunting, the Way it Was, is more than an Alaskan big game guide's story -- it's LeNora Conkle's biography as well. She was there -- This is her story, and Bud's. These are not the flowered up narratives of a professional journalist, but the true tales of two amazing Alaskans and what they did for a living. This is the story of hunting in Alaska, the way it was, but will never be again.
