Download or read book Funny Girls written by Michelle Ann Abate and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several generations, comics were regarded as a boys’ club—created by, for, and about men and boys. In the twenty-first century, however, comics have seen a rise of female creators, characters, and readers. While this sudden presence of women and girls in comics is being regarded as new and noteworthy, the observation is not true for the genre’s entire history. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the medium was enjoyed equally by both sexes, and girls were the protagonists of some of the earliest, most successful, and most influential comics. In Funny Girls: Guffaws, Guts, and Gender in Classic American Comics, Michelle Ann Abate examines the important but long-overlooked cadre of young female protagonists in US comics during the first half of the twentieth century. She treats characters ranging from Little Orphan Annie and Nancy to Little Lulu, Little Audrey of the Harvey Girls, and Li’l Tomboy—a group that collectively forms a tradition of Funny Girls in American comics. Abate demonstrates the massive popularity these Funny Girls enjoyed, revealing their unexplored narrative richness, aesthetic complexity, and critical possibility. Much of the humor in these comics arose from questioning gender roles, challenging social manners, and defying the status quo. Further, they embodied powerful points of collection about both the construction and intersection of race, class, gender, and age, as well as popular perceptions about children, representations of girlhood, and changing attitudes regarding youth. Finally, but just as importantly, these strips shed light on another major phenomenon within comics: branding, licensing, and merchandising. Collectively, these comics did far more than provide amusement—they were serious agents for cultural commentary and sociopolitical change.

Book excerpt: Debut author Misty Wilson chronicles her seventh-grade experience as the only girl on her town’s football team in this empowering graphic memoir about teamwork, friendship, crushes, and touchdowns. Misty never shies away from a challenge, on or off the field. So when the boys tell her she can’t play football, there’s only one thing to do: join their team and show them what she’s got. But the training is rougher than she thought—and so are the other guys, who aren’t thrilled about having a girl on their team. Middle school isn’t so easy, either. Misty wants to fit in with the popular kids, but they think a girl playing football is “weird.” Even her best friend doesn’t get it. Can Misty find a way to score points with her teammates, make new friends, and show everyone—including herself—what it means to play like a girl? “I am a huge fan of Misty and her courageous journey of staying true to herself. Readers will love her!” —Terri Libenson, New York Times bestselling author of the Emmie & Friends series “This is the book I wish I’d had as a kid. Misty’s passion for football and her fight to play in a male-dominated sport while balancing friendship and crushes makes for a winning read!” —Dr. Jen Welter, first female NFL coach, first female running back in men’s pro football, and founder of Grrridiron Girls

Book Synopsis Game of My Life Ohio State Buckeyes by : Steve Greenberg
Download or read book Game of My Life Ohio State Buckeyes written by Steve Greenberg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. J. Hawk can isolate the game of his life, the 2006 Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame, not because of individual statistics, but because of what the game represented. “I think the fact that it was the end of an amazing four years—four big Bowl wins; three Michigan wins; lots of victories in those four years; and an amazing group of teammates and coaches—is why it felt like the game of my life,” Hawk said. Jan White has a different reason for the game of his life: He scored his first touchdown as a Buckeye, playing a position he didn’t necessarily want to play. “It became a footrace I was determined to win,” White says of his 72-yard reception from Rex Kern against Northwestern in 1968. Whoever they are and whatever the reason, there always is “the” game in a player’s memory bank. The folks, whose stories are chronicled in Game of My Life Ohio State Buckeyes, tell you why a certain game was the best, providing the detail, the color, and the emotion that only a player can share. Football fans, most especially those card-carrying members of Buckeye Nation, will be enlightened and entertained by these stories. Buckeye greats such as Archie Griffin, Cris Carter, Mike Lanese, and Bob Hoying relive their legendary moments—from the sidelines to the huddle, from the depths of impending defeat to the pinnacle of glory. It just doesn’t get any better.
