Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behavior of bubbles nucleating from a glass cavity was studied using high speed photography. Water and ethanol were used with varying amounts of cavity heat at several subatomospheric pressures. Bubble growth, departure diameter, and frequency were related to the fluid used, cavity heat, operating pressure and local convection currents. At low pressures, the departure diameter was studied for dynamic effects. The frequency-departure diameter product was observed for increasing bubble frequency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High speed motion pictures of bubble nucleation from glass capillaries were obtained. The fluids used were: distilled water, water with wetting agent, water with sucrose, and ethanol. Capillaries of cylindrical, conical, and reentrant geometries were used with inner diameters ranging from .0182 to .0381 inches. The penetration of the liquid-vapor interface into a cavity after bubble departure appeared to be inertia controlled. Cavity interior geometry and cleanliness had a direct effect upon the liquid-vapor interface penetration distance. The depth of penetration of the interface increased as cavity size increased. Viscosity reduced the interface penetration. Bubble growth curves were obtained for a typical bubble in each fluid. Bubble departure diameter appeared to be independent of cavity geometry but increased as cavity size increased. Viscosity retarded bubble growth during the initial stages of growth. (Author).

Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.

Book excerpt: For phenomena involving bubble nucleation, the molecular cluster model is used to predict the tensile strength and superheat limit of liquids and the amount of decompression for gaseous bubble nucleation in supersaturated solutions. The book investigates various gaseous bubble nucleation events including the bubble formation in gas-water solutions, CO bubble formation in iron melts, the formation of microcellular foams in polymers, the nucleation of nano-sized H2O bubbles in rhyolite melts, and bubble nucleation in shear flow fields. The book also investigates vaporous bubble nucleation events such as bubble formation on a cavity-free surface and inside a solid nanopore in 3M NaCl solution, superheat limit of liquids, and bubble nucleation near the absolute zero temperature by quantum tunnelling in liquid helium. For bubble dynamics phenomena, a set of homologous solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for evolving spherical bubbles are used to treat gaseous bubble growth in organic solutions, polymer solutions, and in viscous rhyolitic melts. The growth and collapse of laser-induced vapor bubbles in liquid, and on solid particles is discussed as an example of homologous motion of the spherical object. Sonoluminescence phenomena in water and in sulfuric acid solutions, the pressure and shock wave propagation in bubbly mixtures, the gravitational collapse of Newtonian stars, and the core collapse of supernovas are also treated using these homologous solutions. The motion of a fire-ball generated by a TNT explosion underwater is obtained using a zero gravitational constant in the equation of motion for Newtonian stars.

This problem is important for understanding the complex phenomena associated with single- and two-phase ows in heated micro-channels. The challenge posed by high heat uxes in electronic chips makes thermal management a key factor in the development of these systems. Cooling of mic- electronic components by new cooling technologies, as well as improvement of the existing ones, is becoming a necessity as the power dissipation levels of integrated circuits increases and their sizes decrease. Miniature heat sinks with liquid ows in silicon wafers could signi cantly improve the performance and reliability of se- conductor devices. The improvements are made by increasing the effective thermal conductivity, by reducing the temperature gradient across the wafer, by reducing the maximum wafer temperature, and also by reducing the number and intensity of localized hot spots. A possible way to enhance heat transfer in systems with high power density is to change the phase in the micro-channels embedded in the device. This has motivated a number of theoretical and experimental investigations covering various aspects of heat transfer in micro-channel heat sinks with phase change. The ow and heat transfer in heated micro-channels are accompanied by a n- ber of thermohydrodynamic processes, such as liquid heating and vaporization, bo- ing, formation of two-phase mixtures with a very complicated inner structure, etc., which affect signi cantly the hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of the co- ing systems.
