Book excerpt: Mathematical modeling of bubbles dynamics is presented in turbulent flow to study the behaviour of vapour growth bubble between two phases (vapour-superheated liquids) flow. Theoretical study of the growth problem is solved analytically in terms of initial void fraction and initial bubble velocity. The growth problem in a viscous superheated liquid is investigated under the proposed pressure of Plesset and Zwick. The growth of bubble radius in a constant and variable dynamical viscosity is studied. The effect of constant and variable dynamical viscosity for two different cases of pressure is studied. The initial time of growth of vapour bubbles between two phase laminar-turbulent flow is introduced in thermal stage. This book is suitable and will be interesting for all researchers in related fields.

Book excerpt: For phenomena involving bubble nucleation, the molecular cluster model is used to predict the tensile strength and superheat limit of liquids and the amount of decompression for gaseous bubble nucleation in supersaturated solutions. The book investigates various gaseous bubble nucleation events including the bubble formation in gas-water solutions, CO bubble formation in iron melts, the formation of microcellular foams in polymers, the nucleation of nano-sized H2O bubbles in rhyolite melts, and bubble nucleation in shear flow fields. The book also investigates vaporous bubble nucleation events such as bubble formation on a cavity-free surface and inside a solid nanopore in 3M NaCl solution, superheat limit of liquids, and bubble nucleation near the absolute zero temperature by quantum tunnelling in liquid helium. For bubble dynamics phenomena, a set of homologous solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for evolving spherical bubbles are used to treat gaseous bubble growth in organic solutions, polymer solutions, and in viscous rhyolitic melts. The growth and collapse of laser-induced vapor bubbles in liquid, and on solid particles is discussed as an example of homologous motion of the spherical object. Sonoluminescence phenomena in water and in sulfuric acid solutions, the pressure and shock wave propagation in bubbly mixtures, the gravitational collapse of Newtonian stars, and the core collapse of supernovas are also treated using these homologous solutions. The motion of a fire-ball generated by a TNT explosion underwater is obtained using a zero gravitational constant in the equation of motion for Newtonian stars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops an analysis of the air entrainment processes in free-surface flows. These flows are investigated as homogeneous mixtures with variable density. Several types of air-water free-surface flows are studied: plunging jet flows, open channel flows, and turbulent water jets discharging into air. Experimental observations reported by the author confirm the concept that the air-water mixture behaves as a homogeneous compressible fluid in each case. This book will be of great interest to professionals working in many fields of engineering: chemical, civil, environmental, mechanical, mining, metallurgy, and nuclear. Covers new information on the air-water flow field: air bubble distributions, air-water velocity profiles, air bubble sizes and bubble-turbulence interactions Features new analysis is developed for each flow configuration and compared successfully with model and prototype data Includes over 372 references and more than 170 figures with over 60 photographs Presents useful information for design engineers and research-and-development scientists who require a better understanding of the fluid mechanics of air-water flows

Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented at the IUTAM Symposium on Bubble Dynamics and Interface Phenomena held at the University of Birmingham from 6-9 September 1993. In many respects it follows on a decade later from the very successful IUTAM Symposium held at CALTECH in June 1981 on the Mechanics and physics of bubbles in liquids which was organised by the late Milton Plesset and Leen van Wijngaarden. The intervening period has seen major development with both experiment and theory. On the experimental side there have been ad vances with very high speed photography and data recording that provide detailed information on fluid and interface motion. Major developments in both computer hardware and software have also led to extensive improvement in our understand ing of bubble and interface dynamics although development is still limited by the sheer complexity of the laminar and turbulent flow regimes often associated with bubbly flows. The symposium attracts wide and extensive interest from engineers, physical, chemical, biological and medical scientists and applied mathematicians. The sci entific committee sought to achieve a balance between theory and experiment over a range of fields in bubble dynamics and interface phenomena. It was our intention to emphasise both the breadth and recent developments in these various fields and to encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas on both experimental techniques and theo retical developments. The programme, and the proceedings recorded herein, cover bubble dynamics, sound and wave propagation, bubbles in flow, sonoluminescence, acoustic cavitation, underwater explosions, bursting bubbles and ESWL.

Book excerpt: A detailed look at some of the more modern issues of hydrodynamic stability, including transient growth, eigenvalue spectra, secondary instability. It presents analytical results and numerical simulations, linear and selected nonlinear stability methods. By including classical results as well as recent developments in the field of hydrodynamic stability and transition, the book can be used as a textbook for an introductory, graduate-level course in stability theory or for a special-topics fluids course. It is equally of value as a reference for researchers in the field of hydrodynamic stability theory or with an interest in recent developments in fluid dynamics. Stability theory has seen a rapid development over the past decade, this book includes such new developments as direct numerical simulations of transition to turbulence and linear analysis based on the initial-value problem.

Book excerpt: Hydraulic cavitation and its effects have been reported to be substantially inhibited and subsequently suppressed by the addition of minute quantities of water-soluble polymer. Modelling the growth and collapse of a single cavitation bubble in water has been established as the fundamental theoretical approach to understanding this phenomenon. Laser-induced cavitation has been developed as a technique for the experimental investigation and confirmation of predicted spherical and nonspherical bubble dynamics in quiescent viscous fluids. The present experimental research has sought to form a link between previous theoretical and experimental efforts. Optical cavitation has been used to create model cavitation bubbles nonintrusively within a fluid undergoing a steady shear flow history. The flow-induced deformation of these single bubbles was recorded and analyzed. Originator supplied keywords include: cavitation, rheology, non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, bubbles, nonspherical, viscoelastic liquids, polymers.

Examples of these phenomena are liquid/solids mixing, bubble coalescence and disintergration, particle entrainment to the freeboard, and bed contraction.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use direct numerical simulations to analyze the evolution of a temporally growing two-dimensional free shear layer seeded with a dilute suspension of bubbles under gravity. The bubble concentrations are dilute enough so that bubble interactions are negligible, but cumulative effects of bubbles alter the flow field. The evolution of the bubbles can then be determined by tracking many individual bubbles, and the flow field is advanced using the Navier-Stokes equations with a coupling term in the momentum equation representing the effect of the bubbles on the flow. We interpret the results in terms of the difference in the vorticity, bubble concentration, and pressure fields relative to the passive or one way coupled case. Due to the nature of the vorticity production mechanism, the net circulation is not affected by the bubbles, but local variations do occur, especially near the vortex center. In addition to the effect of the bubbles on the flow, the bubble field is also altered as a result of the two-way coupling. The location of bubble accumulation is shifted away from the vortex center and the magnitude of this accumulation is reduced relative to the passive case.

Book excerpt: The mechanisms which govern the growth of a spherical vapour bubble in an unbounded liquid were exposed by investigating the complex interaction between the heat transfer and the fluid flow surrounding a bubble as it grows from inception, through the various growth stages, to diffusion controlled growth. The influence of system pressure and liquid superheat were also investigated.
