Book excerpt: Excerpt from Browder's Pulpit: Or, the Logic of the New Covenant This is our first book, and we are certain that it is not free from mistakes. We believe that the merit of a book of this kind should depend not so much upon its bulk as the thoughtfulness of the writer. However, the author knows that among the things that float down the stream of time, the largest is the least likely to sink and the most likely to be seen. It is popular in writing books to prelude them with an apology for having done so; and also to speak of the many difficulties the authors labored under during their preparation. But the author of these pages has neither apology nor complaints to offer, but he has good and sufficient reasons, he thinks, for offering to the reading public this work. It is because the author believes that the sub jects discussed in this work are very important, and therefore interesting, that he has undertaken to prepare it for the press. He also believes he can reach a certain class of readers who are gener ally neglected in the works of the Brotherhood, because they are over-shot. The aim of the pres ent volume is to set forth, in a plain and simple style, Jesus Christ as the Savior of men, and the New Testament as the only means of his appoint ment in order to the accomplishment of that end. It is proposed, also, to expose some of the more prominent, glaring misrepresentations heaped upon our people by ignorant sectarians. Book excerpt: An engaging and meticulously researched history of Texas Populism and its contributions to modern American liberalism In the years after the Civil War, the banks, railroads, and industrial corporations of Gilded-Age America, abetted by a corrupt political system, concentrated vast wealth in the hands of the few and made poverty the fate of many. In response, a group of hard†‘pressed farmers and laborers from Texas organized a movement for economic justice called the Texas People’s Party—the original Populists. Arguing that these Texas Populists were among the first to elaborate the set of ideas that would eventually become known as modern liberalism, Gregg Cantrell shows how the group broke new ground in reaching out to African Americans and Mexican Americans, rethinking traditional gender roles, and demanding creative solutions and forceful government intervention to solve economic inequality. While their political movement ultimately failed, this volume reveals how the ideas of the Texas People’s Party have shaped American political history.

Book excerpt: The membership of River Road Church, Baptist, includes a wide spectrum of persons of varying educational attainments, wide economic levels, and all ages from children to seniors. They represent a variety of careers including merchants, trades, professions, community leaders, and educational faculty in the local schools, colleges, graduate schools, and seminaries. No matter the educational level of the membership, the church sought a highly educated clergy. The pastors called to serve River Road Church came with advanced graduate studies and earned doctor's degrees. The five preachers in this volume span almost seven decades. Each stayed a length of time to accomplish the challenges he faced in the building up of the congregation and the enhancement of the spiritual life of the membership. Each preacher brought different gifts of preaching, management styles, craftsmanship, and vision.

Book excerpt: The title of this volume will readily suggest its object. It is an attempt to interpret the preaching of our day. It undertakes to get back of it, into its sources, to characterize its distinctive peculiarities and to estimate its value. It would look at the preaching of our day in the light of those chief agencies of the modern world that have powerfully affected it. It is the Protestant pulpit that furnishes the material of our investigation. - Preface.
