Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicks: Hatching and Rearing; A Manual of Dependable Instruction in Incubating, Brooding, Feeding, Housing and Developing Winners and Layers; Fattening, Killing and Marketing Broilers and Roasting Chickens Success in hatching and rearing the chicks is absolutely necessary for profitable poultry keeping. The fancier, the egg farmer and the market poulterer must produce every year a certain greater or less number of chickens. The fancier must have cockerels and pullets for exhibition and sale, the egg man must have pullets to lay, the poulterer must have tender broilers and roasters for his trade and all must replace the stock sold, or aged beyond its usefulness. This young stock is required to be good or it will not satisfactorily and profitably serve its various purposes; the mere fact that it has been brought from the shell and made to live until it is time to market it, or to maturity, as the case may be, is no guaranty that it will sooner or later return a fair rate of interest on its cost. Thousands of chicks are hatched each year and placed in brooders, which, either because of weakness in the parent stock or improper incubation, are practically worthless, so far as their ability to make good growth and development is concerned. Other thousands which leave the shell strong and healthy are spoiled in the rearing, so that they reach the profit-turning age in such condition that they are unfit for the purposes of their owners. The only chick that is profitable is the one well hatched and well reared, so that it possesses health and vigor. This indicates the necessity of proper incubation, healthful brooding, correct feeding and intelligent care. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Incubation and Brooding: A Guide to Profitable Poultry Raising This book is written to aid and inform beginners who know little or nothing of artificial incubation and brooding; to assist those who have learned something about it and wish to know more; and to supply a handy reference for those who know it all. As originally written, it would have made a volume three times as large as the present one, but the people of to-day want everything boiled down, concentrated, concise, convenient. A triple extract contains all the perfume and vital qualities of three times its bulk of plain tincture; so we have rewritten it, carefully eliminating all superfluous matter, and placing the gist of it before our readers in a compact form, convenient for the desk and not too cumbersome for a good-sized pocket. Instead of using a thick, porous paper, which would increase the bulk fourfold, we have chosen a heavy, superior plate paper and new type, believing that our readers would prefer elegance to unnecessary bulk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kellerstrass Way of Raising Poultry I have been several years writing this small book, and the reason it took me so long was because I would not write anything until I had tried it out satisfactorily, and the best advice I can give anyone who is about to embark in the poultry business is, start small, and learn it as you grow; then you are sure of success, and no matter what breed of chick ens you start with, first find out the kind that you like best; then go to that breeder's farm and buy the best birds that your money will buy. A good foundation is the main thing in any line of business. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The idea of writing a book had never occurred to the author, but after talking and explaining chickens to hundreds of men and women engaged in this particular business he was led at their ea'rn est solicitation to set forth his ideas and the ideas of others with whom he has come in contact. In the following pages the author has simply tried, with no attempt at fine phrase ology and detailed theory, to explain what he knows about poultry. This book is based upon practical chicken know ledge by practical people with no attempt to offer any plan or suggestion which cannot be practically carried out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mating and Breeding of Poultry To the man or woman who desires some occupation or activity for a few spare hours as a relief from the fatigue, the strain and the routine of the regular day's work, poultry breeding, whether for the production of exhibition stock or of stock with heavy egg producing ability, is ideal. An intimate understanding of the laws or principles of breeding as well as of their application is necessary for success and poultry breeding is therefore an occupation which demands deep and discriminating thought and whose complex problems are at once a challenge and a stimulation to the intelligence of the breeder as well as being of absorbing interest. Moreover, the poultry breeder finds opportunity for the expression of his artistic instincts in molding the form or shape of the birds and the color or combination of colors to meet his ideal. In addition, there is the gratification of the sporting instinct, the pleasurable excitement of competition in exhibiting the choicest specimens at the shows and the satisfaction which comes from a win in the realization that the breeder has surpassed the efforts of his competitors and produced birds superior to theirs. Let no one to whom poultry breeding appeals hesitate to engage in it on the ground that he has not the room or facilities to enable him to compete with others more favorably situated. With only a back yard or village lot, and with the crudest equipment, it is possible to produce fowls of the highest excellence. Many winning birds in the leading exhibitions are produced by men and women who breed on a very limited scale without farms available for their poultry operations.
