Certainly not when you’re already trying to hock illicit goods … though are they really illicit if you found them on a long, lost treasure ship that you uncovered for a greedy gangster and calculating noble? Having found the Celeste and escaped both death and imprisonment, the crew of the cargo ship Lyra just wants to get back to hauling bugs for unscrupulous harvesters so they can earn enough for food and fuel. Unfortunately, the crew is missing one of its members. Navigator Ishmael Damath is in the hands of gangster Ludovicus Visi after sacrificing himself for the safety of the others. Said gangster has given him the impossible task of translating an ancient book written in a long-dead language. If Ish doesn’t translate it, he’ll be thrown to the tigers … too bad he didn’t pay more attention in school. The crew suspects Ish didn’t go with the gangster entirely willingly. They plan to rescue him … but that’s hard to do when they have no money and no idea where he is. Captain Rebeka Mino is no closer to her plan to retire to a quiet planet where she can drink whiskey and read romance novels all day. Especially since her estranged daughter, Juniper, seems to be mixed up with the Celeste. Alek finds himself facing a return to a planet he recently escaped from and had hoped never to see again … and he’s still in debt to those who helped him escape. And to launch any sort of rescue, daring or otherwise, Tink is faced with the daunting choice: her home or her family. Can they rescue Ish from the gangster’s clutches? Can they survive the sands of Thraxa? And, most importantly, can they deal with an angry Grim? Find out now as the adventures of the Lyra and her crew continue!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tactical and technical history of the development of British, American, and Japanese naval air defense from the 1920s to the 1980s. This is an account of the evolution of naval fighters for fleet air defense and the parallel evolution of the ships operating and controlling them, concentrating on the three main exponents of carrier warfare: the British Royal Navy, the U.S. Navy, and the Imperial Japanese Navy. It describes the earliest efforts from the 1920s, but it was not until radar allowed the direction of fighters that organized air defense became possible. Thus, major naval-air battles of the Second World War like Midway, the Pedestal convoy, the Philippine Sea, and Okinawa are portrayed as tests of the new technology. This was ultimately found wanting by the Kamikaze campaigns, leading to postwar moves towards computer control and new kinds of fighters. After 1945 the threats of nuclear weapons and standoff missiles compounded the difficulties of naval air defense. The second half of the book covers R.N. and U.S.N. attempts to solve these problems, looking at the American experience in Vietnam and British operations in the Falklands War. It concludes with the ultimate U.S. development of techniques and technology to fight the Outer Air Battle in the 1980s, which in turn point to the current state of carrier fighters and the supporting technology. Based largely on documentary sources, some previously unused, this book will appeal to both the naval and aviation communities. “Fighters Over the Fleet provides more information about fleet air defense than any other work currently available. It is recommended for specialist as well aviation-minded readers.” —Naval Historical Foundation

Book excerpt: Could an unobtrusive, skinny, bookish teacher who loves classical music and poetry become a fighter pilot in one of the bloodiest theaters of war our country has known? Could this modest self-described dreamer become the pilot of a Corsair F4U, the fastest plane built—equipped with six menacing, Browning .50 caliber machine guns, a primitive navigation system and a 16-cylinder engine so powerful that it could spin the plane over and crash if accelerated too fast? How far did Wally Thomson, the teacher, travel to become Captain Wallace B. Thomson the war hero of his hometown, Hackensack, New Jersey? In this memoir, Wally describes vivid wartime details that are often insightful, humorous or critical to a life or death decision. He also stands back to provide context for his role in the war effort, describing some of the most relevant battles preceding his arrival in the Pacific. And he reflects on some of the strategies, tactics, mistakes and successes of the Allies and the Japanese while he explains the tasks at hand—flying a powerful aircraft to carry out his missions, leading his men to attack the enemy and to survive to fly another day. Through his telling, we recognize the friendships, fears, romance, humor and the courage he witnessed in the Pacific. Wally’s is just one of the remarkable stories about the countless ordinary men and women who were asked to act in extraordinary ways during World War II. But each story is unique and each one deserves telling. This is Wally’s story—the story of Captain Wallace B. Thomson, a Marine Pilot at the Jugular of the Solomons.

It was also the first group in the Eighth Air Force to be equipped with the P-51. Thanks to this fighter and the talented pilots assigned to the group (men such as Bud Anderson, Kit Carson, John England and Chuck Yeager) the 357th achieved a faster rate of aerial victories than any other Eighth Air Force group during the final year of the war. It also claimed the highest number of aerial kills – 56 – in a single mission. The group was awarded two Distinguished Unit Citations (the unit equivalent of the Medal of Honor). Written by Chris Bucholtz, this book is crammed full of first-hand accounts, superb photography and some of the most colorful profiles to be found in World War II aviation.

Book excerpt: “I hated every minute of training, but I said: ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’” – Muhammad Ali Behind every goal accomplished is a journey filled with confidence, success, and admiration but also challenges, disappointments, and moments of despair. But even when there are hardships, unseen struggles, dark times of indecision, injuries, and financial problems, there are also moments of motivation, self-awareness, and coping strategies to help you push through the negative to reach the positive. Everyone has a story of success. Everyone has a story of failure or missed opportunities. So You Want to Be a Fighter? collects these kinds of stories in one place—told by well-known (and not-so-well-known) trainers, boxers, and MMA fighters, including Chris Algieri, former junior welterweight boxing champion and undefeated kickboxer. You’ll hear about accomplishments, mishaps, tears of joy and pain, moments of utter frustration but also jubilation, and stories about what might have been if things had gone a little bit differently. If you’ve ever wondered what boxers and MMA fighters endure behind the scenes—maybe you yearn to join them?—this is the book that will bring you all the different aspects to competing in a fight sport.
