Book excerpt: A broken pot is made whole again, and within its golden repair we see a world of meaning. Kintsugi is the art of embracing imperfection. In Western cultures, the aim of repair has been to make the broken item 'as good as new'. Kintsugi on the other hand, is a Japanese art that leaves an obvious repair – one that may appear fragile, but which actually makes the restored ceramic piece stronger, more beautiful, and more valuable than before. Leaving clear, bold, visible lines with the appearance of solid gold, it never hides the story of the object's damage. Kintsugi traces memory, bringing together the moment of destruction and the gold seams of repair through finely-honed skills and painstaking, time-consuming labour in the creation of a new pot from the old. There is a story to be told with every crack, every chip. This story inevitably leads to kintsugi's greatest strength. an intimate metaphoric narrative of loss and recovery, breakage and restoration, tragedy and the ability to overcome it. A kintsugi repair speaks of individuality and uniqueness, fortitude and resilience, and the beauty to be found in survival. Kintsugi leads us to a respectful and appreciative acceptance of hardship and ageing. Author Bonnie Kemske explores kintsugi's metaphorical power as well as exploring the technical and practical aspects of the art, meeting with artists and ceramists in Japan and the US to discuss their personal connection to this intricate technique. With the inclusion of diary entries, personal stories, and in-depth exploration of its origin and symbolism, this book shows kintsugi's metaphoric strength as well as its striking aesthetic, making it a unique and powerful art form that can touch our lives.

Book excerpt: An edgy, affecting, and darkly funny debut novel — narrated by Skunk, an eleven-year-old girl in a coma — that explores innocence and its betrayal as powerfully and unforgettably as do Lullabies for Little Criminals and The Lovely Bones Skunk Cunningham’s world is a small one, populated by her family; her teachers and schoolmates; and her neighbours, the quiet Buckley family and the five terrifying Oswald girls and their thug of a father, Bob. When Saskia Oswald, with her stilettos and tight pants, asks shy Rick Buckley for a ride in his new car, he can’t believe his luck. But after a quick fumble, Saskia broadcasts Rick’s deficiencies to anyone who will listen, including her younger sisters. This act of thoughtless cruelty will see Rick dragged off by the police, humiliated, and “broken,” — and, in a tragic chain of events, will leave Skunk hanging on to her young life by a thread. From her hospital bed, Skunk shows us her hapless father finding love, and her idealistic favourite teacher losing it; “Broken” Buckley spiralling into madness; and the Oswald clan coming apart at the seams. As we inch ever closer to the mystery behind her coma, Skunk’s innocence becomes a beacon by which we navigate a world as comic as it is tragic, and as engaging as it is finally uplifting. Broken introduces Daniel Clay as a brilliant and utterly original voice in international fiction.

Book excerpt: Do we all exist in Heaven before becoming human? Is our life on Earth a test to see if we then get to spend Eternity with God? Does evil exist? Do evil spirits exist? Is there anything to the December 21, 2012 Mayan prophecy or other political, environmental, or astronomical events suggesting we may be living in the END TIMES? What does it mean to be Christian in the year 2012 and beyond? Is God even in control? These questions and many more are answered in the pages of Broken Pottery.Janice Thresher is the typical middle class suburban teen of the 1980s. Living near Pittsburgh, PA, she follows her high school sweetheart off to Penn State where he proceeds to dump her. She copes with her loss by partying heavily until God brings a new love into her life. In a cruel twist of fate, this love was not meant to last either. On the other side of the country in Southern California, Sophie Ulsrey, a girl several years younger than Janice, spends her time trying to hide ugly scars sustained after a terrible auto accident in which she lost her father. The accident, and her mothers reaction to it, drives Sophie to achieve wealth and fame as she becomes an adult. As adults, the lives of Janice and Sophie divinely intersect in time to warn fellow Americans of a government cover-up to hide important factual information with apocalyptic national security implications. Just as it was in 1938 when an American radio audience believed Orson Welles "War of the Worlds" broadcast to be truth instead of fiction, many readers of Broken Pottery will be tempted to check their cell phones and digital libraries just to make sure they, too, are reading only a book of fiction. Broken Pottery takes you on a suspenseful adventure through the years 1965-2020, taking on the real difficulties we all have in life, dramatizes them, and provides a considered, thoughtful view of how we tackle them. Study questions for self-reflection or group study are included.

Book excerpt: Another gem from Dr. Paul! Paul writes from the depth of his heart and passion, and describes with accuracy, directness and rawness the cycles of love, its rising and fall. So many of us have gone through this beauty, this intensity only true love can offer and will find peace, understanding and solace thanks to Paul's words. Paul's prose and poetry shows a lot of courage that he found under his belt, which I'm sure will resonate with so many of our individual heart's journeys as readers. Thank you Paul, for finding the right words and music to describe one of the deepest and most vulnerable experiences we go through as human beings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redemption and Regret presents two previously unpublished typescripts of James Scarth Gale, a Canadian missionary to Korea for four decades (1888–1927). During his time in Korea, Gale developed into the foremost Western scholar of Korean history, language, and literature, completing the first translation of Korean literature into a Western language, the first translation of English literature into Korean, and the first comprehensive Korean-English dictionary. In addition to these translations, the typescripts entitled Pen Pictures of Old Korea (ca. 1910) and Old Corea (ca. 1925), each presented here with introductory essays, contain Gale’s observations of various cultural artifacts, behaviours, and practices. Gale lived in Korea during a tumultuous and transformative period that witnessed the transition of the country from a "hermit" suzerain kingdom to an independent empire, and finally to a colonial possession of Japan. Pen Pictures of Old Korea and Old Corea preserve what Gale viewed as inevitably fated for extinction. This realization imbues his writings with a sense of ambivalence towards the "passing" of traditional Korea – owing to the conflict between his profound admiration for pre-modern Korean culture and his Western missionary identity, which demanded that the country adapt to a modern, Christian world.

Book excerpt: First published in 2007. Reading like a detective thriller involving the highest of stakes, this is the story of a discovery that is still to be fully realised one that has split the scholarly community worldwide and which may yet transform our understanding of two of the world's religious faiths. The manuscripts known collectively as the Dead Sea Scrolls have been the subject of controversy ever since the discovery of the first texts in a cave in the Judean Desert at Khirbet Qumran in 197. The precise details of this find and the story of what happened to these manuscripts and many others found subsequently on other sites were shrouded in mystery, partly because some were uncovered during illegal explorations which destroyed important evidence of provenance and partly because it soon became apparent that the contents of the scrolls themselves were highly sensitive, consisting of religious texts, many previously unknown. Today there are several hundred documents and fragments that are considered Dead Sea Scrolls, Del Medico's classic work provides the best and clearest background to the continuing riddle of the scrolls.

Book excerpt: We all know the feeling. We take a leap, only to land flat on our face. Just when our plan appears to be perfect, it falls apart. Life’s failures and disappointments can make it difficult to move forward; how do we pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off? Matt Miofsky examines the life of Jeremiah, whose failed pursuits are described in more detail and depth than any other prophet. Even though God set him apart to speak to the nation of Israel, Jeremiah’s attempts to fulfill his calling were met with ridicule, punishment, and suffering. But through it all, God never left his side. The story of “the weeping prophet” has much to teach us about trusting God during life’s most trying times. The Leader Guide contains everything needed to guide a group through the five-week study including session plans, activities, and discussion questions, as well as multiple format options.
