Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current rise in anti-Semitism is due in part to the fact that the younger generations know almost nothing about the Holocaust, other than the fact that six million Jews were killed. The heart and the mind do not connect with a number, so this fact has little meaning for the reader. We tend to make an emotional connection with the personal story of someone who suffered during and after the war. That's why it is important for survivors to tell their stories. The number of survivors dwindles daily, giving a sense of urgency to this project. The devastation of war does not end when a peace treaty is signed; the destructive aftermath of war can continue for generations. This book tells the story of one family that was torn apart by World War II. Acting on a promise she made to her sister - who was killed by the Nazis - Eda found and adopted her sister's child, who was hidden during the war by a Polish Catholic family. This set up a life-long love-hate mother-daughter relationship, filled with sacrifice, guilt, and resentment, as described in the heart of the book. The family endured many hardships - including six months in a DP camp and a difficult sea voyage - to escape from Poland to America, only to find that they cannot escape the psychic damage of the war. Their psychic scars are manifested in their interactions with each other as well as with the people they encounter. The final chapter reveals how the daughter, after thinking for more than seventy years that she was an only child, discovers that she has a brother living in California.

Book excerpt: A story of a girl who have endure so much in her young life, but she survives and manage to make it. In the short story you will find how hard life has been for her, and how she never gave up. The broken girl was a young survivor who raised four kids alone after her husband death. Although she has endured so much pain and hurt, she always thanked God, because he never gave up on her. All this to say we all have been in love before and did whatever to keep a man, but we also get tired. Love sometimes hurt so bad, and we just give up everything. Do you ever ask yourself if this is a test of God faith? In a relationship love is supposed to be 100/100 but in this situation it was 100/50 fucked up right? We all question God sometimes and we know better. God put people in your life for a reason and season, and he also remove them people for the very same thing. Everything we endured in life is a lesson, at least that's how I see it. Most time people will say things like you're stupid, crazy, or dumb because you love who you love. You would always hear she needs to leave him he not no good for her. The main ones talking and putting the next person down life be worst than yours a total disaster. This broken girl is me and I made it with the help of God and you can do the same to, just never lose faith in God. To my readers I hope you enjoyed the book, I hope my story helped or touched someone who was in this very same battle of love. I gave all thanks to God who has never left my side and always made a way for me and my kids. To my kids, I know you will sit down and read this book one day and have many questions just know your father loved y'all unconditionally and he would've done just about anything to make sure y'all had everything in the world. I love all five of you equally, my five heartbeats forever...To be Continued!!!

Book excerpt: From “one of the great . . . American short story writers,” comes a collection of dark fantastical fiction (The Washington Post). In the Locus Award–winning “Croatoan,” a man descends into the sewers of New York City to confront the detritus of his irresponsibility. An “Emissary from Hamelin” presents humanity with an ultimatum, or everyone on Earth will have a dear price to pay the piper. And in the title story—famously written by the author in the storefront window of a Santa Monica bookshop—Willis Kaw is convinced that he is an alien trapped inside an Earthman’s body, only to discover his suffering serves a purpose. Strange Wine includes these three stories and a dozen more unique visions from the writer the Washington Post hails as a “lyric poet, satirist, explorer of odd psychological corners, and purveyor of pure horror and black comedy.” Includes: “Croatoan,” “Working With the Little People,” “Killing Bernstein,” “Mom,” “In Fear of K,” “Hitler Painted Roses,” “The Wine Has Been Left Open Too Long and the Memory Has Gone Flat,” “From A to Z, in the Chocolate Alphabet,” “Lonely Women Are the Vessels of Time,” “Emissary from Hamelin,” “The New York Review of Bird Seeing,” “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Strange Wine,” “The Diagnosis of Dr. D’arqueAngel”

While it is at the request of her aging, narcissistic mother, she has her own reasons for making the journey to Australia from her home on Mallorca. Something has blighted her life since childhood. Something has cast such a long shadow over her existence that her ability to grasp at life fully, to appreciate her own sense of self-worth, to attain any semblance of happiness, to trust without reservation, has been damaged. Those whom she chooses, and who choose her, seem to want only to exploit her. Having undergone a long period of psychotherapy, Agnes can now return to re-experience the places that featured in her youth in the hope that burning questions will be answered, haunting mysteries solved, and buried memories let out into the light… This is the vibrant, heartening, and often amusing tale of a buoyant and irrepressible woman whose natural energy and determination continue to drive her forward. Having reached middle age, she is determined to grapple with - and heal - the ills that have beset her.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Migrant Canon in Twenty-First-Century France explains the causes of twenty-first-century global migrations and their impact on French literature and the French literary establishment. A marginal genre in 1980s France, since the turn of the century “migrant literature” has become central to criticism and publishing. Oana Sabo addresses previously unanswered questions about the proliferation of contemporary migrant texts and their shifting themes and forms, mechanisms of literary legitimation, and notions of critical and commercial achievement. Through close readings of novels (by Mathias Énard, Milan Kundera, Dany Laferrière, Henri Lopès, Andreï Makine, Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, Alice Zeniter, and others) and sociological analyses of their consecrating authorities (including the Prix littéraire de la Porte Dorée, the Académie française, publishing houses, and online reviewers), Sabo argues that these texts are best understood as cultural commodities that mediate between literary and economic forms of value, academic and mass readerships, and national and global literary markets. By examining the latest literary texts and cultural agents not yet subjected to sufficient critical study, Sabo contributes to contemporary literature, cultural history, migration studies, and literary sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Journey's End, many and varied collaborators write about death, dying, and the end of life. We attempt to describe real life issues and circumstances, and we discuss ways to proactively deal with them. Useful training, resource, and reference material is also included. Death, dying, and end of life are topics many prefer to avoid. This book suggests that we benefit from having frank discussions, living life to the fullest, and planning for our own journey's end, whenever that may be. Everyone who is born eventually will die, whether or not we want to embrace that fact. **** Though few of us know when we will die, we and our family or friends can be well prepared. We can have discussions and create written directives for what we want, if we are unable to verbally state them ourselves. Do we want life support? Do we want interventions that may or may not have any benefit to our quality of life if we are in the hospital or in an accident? Do we want to be involved in planning our funeral, memorial, or celebration of life? The submissions within are from professionals in the field of death and bereavement support and from laypeople, all of whom share stories of dying family members, friends, clients, and patients. Julie and Victoria, the coauthors of this book, also share stories from their personal and professional experiences. Journey's End is a broadly comprehensive book about death, dying, and the end of life.

Book excerpt: Mike Jefferson grew up like a lot of Canadian kids, obsessed with hockey and consumed with making it to the NHL. His father, Steve, and his family were determined to do anything and everything to make their son's dreams come true. So how did this promising young man's hockey career turn into a harrowing real-life crime story played out in sensational news reports? Coach and agent David Frost fast-tracked Jefferson's route to the NHL, but at a staggering cost to almost everyone involved. Along the way, the affable young man turned against his parents, changed his name to Danton, and descended into a spiral of paranoia and violence that finally cut short the career he had sacrificed everything for when he was arrested for conspiracy to commit murder. In this fast-paced and gripping story, veteran hockey journalist Steve Simmons digs beneath the surface to answer questions that have left Canadians shocked and fascinated. How did Frost get such a grip on Danton and his family? How did his parents allow this to happen? What exactly was Danton's relationship with Frost? And whom did Danton hire a hitman to kill--his father or his agent?
