In one book, you get consistency, completeness and unbeatable value: a wealth of clear, concise, organized knowledge, impossible to find in one place anywhere else! Our approach can be summed up with a simple philosophy: Start at the beginning. Progress in a logical order. Build one concept on top of another. Finish at the end. Avoid jargon. Speak in plain English. Bust the buzzwords, demystify jargon, and cut through doubletalk. Fill in the gaps, build a solid base of knowledge, put a structure in place and show how everything fits together... knowledge and understanding that lasts a lifetime. Broadband 101 is designed for the non-engineering professional needing an overview and update of the modern broadband converged IP telecom network, and for those new to the business needing to get up to speed quickly. Broadband 101 is a subset of the larger volume Telecom 101, focusing on the broadband IP telecom network while skipping topics associated with the legacy PSTN. From first principles to MPLS VPNs, ISPs to cloud computing, radio fundamentals to 5G, we’ll explain the jargon, the technologies, and more importantly, the underlying ideas, without bogging down on legacy technologies. Based on training courses developed, refined and tuned over many years, the selection of material, its order and emphasis in Broadband 101 is proven and field-tested to bring you the knowledge you need. Understanding what everything does and how it all works together allows you to be more accurate, eliminates frustration with buzzwords, and gives you confidence to make meaningful contributions. Don't be left out in the cold! You have the added advantage of knowing what someone is talking about, even if you’re not familiar with the exact details of the variation they’re discussing. List of Chapters: The Broadband Converged IP Telecommunications Network. Telecom Fundamentals: modems and multiplexing Network Fundamentals: packets, frames, TCP, port numbers, MPLS The Internet and Cloud Computing: ISPs, DNS, cloud computing, web services and data centers Mobile Broadband, Wi-Fi and Starlink: spectrum, mobile networks, LTE and 5G, broadband wireless, Wi-Fi and satellite Fiber Optics: cables, wavelengths, DWDM, Optical Ethernet, MANs and PONs Broadband on Copper: DSL and Cable Modems Fundamentals of Voice over IP: VoIP system components, voice in packets, SIP, softswitches, gateways The OSI Layers and Protocol Stacks: Layers, the purpose of each layer, how protocol stacks work LANs, VLANs and Optical Ethernet: LANs , MAC addresses, MAC frames, Layer 2 switches, VLANs and Optical Ethernet IP Networks, Routers and Addresses: public and private IP addresses, subnets, routers, DHCP, NAT, IPv6 MPLS and Carrier Networks: Service Level Agreements, virtual circuits, business VPNs, Class of Service Broadband 101 is intended to be read sequentially, building ideas on top of ideas. The detailed Table of Contents makes it also useful as a day-to-day reference handbook. Looking at the table of contents, you’ll see that many chapters of Broadband 101 are like self-contained reference books on specific topics, like Introduction and Overview of the Broadband IP Telecom Network , Telecom Fundamentals, Network Fundamentals, Wireless, Fiber, VoIP, IP, LANs and MPLS. You get all of these topics bound in one volume for one low price. Compare this to hunting down and paying for multiple books by different authors that may or may not cover what you need to know- and you'll agree this is a very attractive deal. Get your copy today!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides extensive coverage of standardized QoS technologies for fixed and mobile ultra-broadband networks and services—bringing together technical, regulation, and business aspects The Quality of Service (QoS) has been mandatory for traditional telecommunication services such as telephony (voice) and television (TV) since the first half of the past century, however, with the convergence of telecommunication networks and services onto Internet technologies, the QoS provision remains a big challenge for all ICT services, not only for traditional ones. This book covers the standardized QoS technologies for fixed and mobile ultra-broadband networks and services, including the business aspects and QoS regulation framework, which all will have high impact on the ICTs in the current and the following decade. QoS for Fixed and Mobile Ultra-Broadband starts by introducing readers to the telecommunications field and the technology, and the many aspects of both QoS and QoE (Quality of Experience). The next chapter devotes itself to Internet QoS, starting with an overview of numerous technology protocols and finishing with business and regulatory aspects. The next three chapters look at QoS in NGN and Future Networks, QoS for fixed ultra-broadband, and QoS for mobile ultra-broadband. The book also provides readers with in-depth accounts of services in fixed and mobile ultra-broadband; broadband QoS parameters, KPIs, and measurements; network neutrality; and the QoS regulatory framework. Comprehensively covers every aspect of QoS technology for fixed and mobile ultra-broadband networks and services, including the technology, the many regulations, and their applications in business Explains how the QoS is transiting from the traditional telecom world to an all-IP world Presents all the fundamentals of QoS regulation, as well as SLA regulation QoS for Fixed and Mobile Ultra-Broadband is an excellent resource for managers, engineers, and employees from regulators, ICT government organizations, telecommunication companies (operators, service providers), ICT companies, and industry. It is also a good book for students and professors from academia who are interested in understanding, implementation, and regulation of QoS for fixed and mobile ultra-broadband.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative introduction to the roles of switching and transmission in broadband integrated services networks Principles of Broadband Switching and Networking explains the design and analysis of switch architectures suitable for broadband integrated services networks, emphasizing packet-switched interconnection networks with distributed routing algorithms. The text examines the mathematical properties of these networks, rather than specific implementation technologies. Although the pedagogical explanations in this book are in the context of switches, many of the fundamental principles are relevant to other communication networks with regular topologies. After explaining the concept of the modern broadband integrated services network and why it is necessary in today’s society, the book moves on to basic switch design principles, discussing two types of circuit switch design—space domain and time domain—and packet switch design. Throughput improvements are illustrated by some switch design variations such as Speedup principle, Channel-Grouping principle, Knockout principle, and Dilation principle. Moving seamlessly into advanced switch design principles, the book covers switch scalability, switch design for multicasting, and path switching. Then the focus moves to broadband communications networks that make use of such switches. Readers receive a detailed introduction on how to allocate network resources and control traffic to satisfy the quality of service requirements of network users and to maximize network usage. As an epilogue, the text shows how transmission noise and packet contention have similar characteristics and can be tamed by comparable means to achieve reliable communication. Principles of Broadband Switching and Networking is written for senior undergraduate and first-year postgraduate students with a solid background in probability theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital information drives participation in politics, the economy, and society. Yet great disparities exist as to which communities have access to the internet. In 2017, only half of residents of formerly industrial Flint, Michigan, had broadband or satellite internet at home, while over 90 percent of those in thriving Sunnyvale, California, in Silicon Valley, were connected. More recently, Covid-19 laid bare these persistent digital divides in both urban and rural communities, illustrating that broadband use is a fundamental resource for the future of opportunity in communities. While previous studies have examined the impacts of broadband infrastructure, they have indicated little about the extent to which local populations can afford and use the technology. Moreover, there has been limited scientific evidence on how broadband adoption matters for collective benefits. Including new data on broadband subscriptions from 2000-2017, and comprehensive analysis for U.S. states, counties, metros, cities, and neighborhoods, Choosing the Future argues that broadband use in the population is a form of digital human capital that benefits communities as well as individuals. Broadband has a causal impact across all types of communities--for economic prosperity, growth, income, employment, and policy innovation. Yet there are urban neighborhoods and rural counties where as little as one-quarter of the population has a broadband subscription, even when mobile is included. As we build "smart" cities and communities, as economies and jobs continue to experience rapid change, and as more information and services migrate online, it is communities with widespread broadband use that will be best positioned for inclusive innovation, with the digital human capital to thrive.

This timely volume takes an interdisciplinary, case study-based approach to examining network issues and experiences in order to develop recommendations that can inform antitrust, regulatory and legislative policy. Legal, economic, political and institutional aspects of network access are analyzed. The first part of the volume focuses on five topics that are central to reasoned analysis of the access problem. The second part presents ten case studies of network access in the energy, transportation, telecommunications, internet and banking industries. The volume concludes with comparisons and contrasts across the cases and policy recommendations. Network Access, Regulation and Antitrust will prove invaluable to students of business, economics, law and economics and industrial economics, policy makers and academics working in the field.

Book excerpt: "This book focuses on the extent to which the Internet is fast penetrating the semi-urban and rural areas of Asia and the ways in which rural communities are accessing and using the Internet. It examines the infrastructure, use, and impact of the Internet at the grassroots level in seven representative South Asian and Southeast Asian countries: Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka. These countries are at various stages of development in their attempts to build epistemic societies, bridge the digital divide, and improve access to services delivered through the Internet for their citizens leading to the gradual development of the cyber communities." "The case studies and surveys are supported by secondary data and interviews. The major areas of concern include frequency of access, time spent, and purposes of using the Internet. The problems faced by the citizens, including those of infrastructure, content, and social factors are examined to evaluate how these barriers could be sorted out in the future. The challenges faced by governments in transforming their societies into the epistemic variety and much of the debate and interventions within these countries have been identified and compared, leading to a better understanding of how the Internet can catalyze development in Asia."--BOOK JACKET.
