Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heraldry, English and Foreign: With a Dictionary of Heraldic Terms I, Heraldry, as its name implies, was in its origin a purely military art, and, according to Spener, Menestrier, and other writers, originated in its modern form from the tournaments instituted (or, at least, brought into perfect organization) by the Emperor Henry the Fowler (c. 950) for the purpose of keeping up the military spirit among the knightly families of that early day during intervals of peace, and promoting courage and dexterity by means of such martial exercises. More critical inquiries into the origin of these assemblies carry them back a century earlier, when a great gathering of knights and their retainers for military games was held at Worms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Heraldry This little Volume, specially prepared for the use of students at an early period of their study of English Heraldry, commends itself also to those inquirers who may desire to obtain some general information on the same subject, without having any intention to devote to Heraldry much either of their time or of their serious regard. The success, no less extraordinary than gratifying, of my larger work on Heraldry, led me to hope that a not less favourable reception might be extended to a simpler and much shorter essay, more decidedly elementary in its aim and character, and yet as far as possible within its limits complete. Such a treatise I have endeavoured to produce in this Volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Heraldic Book-Stamps: Figured and Described The large majority of the stamps illustrated herewith are' in the British Museum, but I have included a few in private ownership, and to these owners my sincere thanks are due for their kindness in allowing me to copy the various coats. I have in every case mentioned this private ownership, and where such mention is not found the book from which the drawing has been made is in the British Museum, either in the Department of Printed Books or in the Department of Manuscripts. Heraldry is of military origin, but its decorative side, and the various exact rules which govern it, were probably brought into use during the Middle Ages, in connection with the frequent Tournaments which were governed by strict rules. The ceremonies to be followed at the Tournaments were very closely laid down heralds as well as their assistants of all sorts came into much prominence, and personal insignia acquired an importance they have never had since. Even now there are a few signs of ancient personal heraldry existing in our army; crests and tartans of private families may be found among the Highland regiments, but the modern tendency, especially since the late war in South Africa, has been to abolish such peculiarities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leopards of England and Other Papers on Heraldry The first article in this collection is offered rather for the instruction of ordinary folk who wish to know something about the history of the royal arms than for the consideration of advanced students of armory. It is not claimed for it that it contains anything, that is new, or indeed anything that cannot be gleaned with a little trouble from printed books and a study of armorial seals. It is hoped, however, that it may be found to set forth the reasons of the changes that have been made from time to time in the arms of the sovereigns of England at somewhat greater detail than in some of the handbooks on heraldry. He is aware that, in the Opinion of most people, it is dry and uninteresting, but he thinks that this arises from a want of some systematically arranged Grammar, which would entice the Two to further research. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Heraldry, Historical and Popular Historical Heraldry occupies a position of such impor tance in Histories of England, that a certain amount of heraldic knowledge has become indispensable to the. Student of English History. Every Gothic Architect ought to be a thorough Herald. Heraldry alone can enable him to render his works, in the noblest and most perfect sense, historic monuments. Without Heraldry, no lover of the great Art, which has been so happily revived amongst us, is able either to feel the full power of what the Gothic has transmitted to him from the olden time, or to realise all that it is now able to accomplish as a living art. The writer believes apologies to be entirely unnecessary. Such topics deserve their due Share of attention (though it may not bo a large share) in a country which con tains millions of descendants of good fami lies of England and the Continent. General George Washington inherited a coat of arms from reputable English ancestors, and used it on appropriate occasions.
