Download or read book Move On! written by Faith McClung Kline O'Brien and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Faith McClung Kline O’Brien’s paternal grandparents, Albert McClung and Mattie Fitzgerald, met at a small, country church in Oklahoma in 1907, the year that territory became a state. Albert’s ancestors included Revolutionary patriots “Saucy Jack” McClung, of Scotch-Irish descent, and Abraham Kuykendall, of Dutch lineage, who, around 1740, relocated from New York to North Carolina, where he settled and accumulated a fortune in gold coins. Mattie descended from two former sea captains who became merchants in Brooklyn, New York—Edward Card from Maine and Nathaniel Grafton from Newport, Rhode Island, whose seafaring ancestors had sailed the Atlantic Ocean since the mid-1600s. In Move On! O’Brien chronicles her extended family’s history, with each chapter focusing on one of Albert’s or Mattie’s seventeen ancestral branches—the Fitzgerald and McClung Clans and their allied lines: the Anthony, Barry, Card, Dods, Forman, Grafton, Kuykendall, Longstreet, Miller, Reid, Thompson, Tidwell, Trigg, Wilbore, and Wyckoff families. Ten of these lines include Revolutionary patriots, and ten have roots in America extending as far back as the 1600s. Move On! tells how descendants of these disparate families met, united in marriage, and eventually became pioneers on the Southwestern prairies. Glimpses of religion in the lives of everyday Americans appear throughout Move On!, which combines genealogical details with personal stories, many taking place during pivotal events in US history. Stories from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries told firsthand by O’Brien’s late grandparents help bring Move On! to life through the eyes of real-life characters, her ancestors.

Book Synopsis Operation Albion by : Michael B. Barrett
Download or read book Operation Albion written by Michael B. Barrett and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-19 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1917, an invasion force of some 25,000 German soldiers, accompanied by a flotilla of 10 dreadnoughts, 350 other vessels, a half-dozen zeppelins, and 80 aircraft, attacked the Baltic islands of Dago, Osel, and Moon at the head of the Gulf of Riga. It proved to be the most successful amphibious operation of World War I. The three islands fell, the Gulf was opened to German warships and was now a threat to Russian naval bases in the Gulf of Finland, and 20,000 Russians were captured. The invasion proved to be the last major operation in the East. Although the invasion had achieved its objectives and placed the Germans in an excellent position for the resumption of warfare in the spring, within three weeks of the operation, the Bolsheviks took power in Russia (November 7, 1917) and Albion faded into obscurity as the war in the East came to a slow end.

Book Synopsis World War II in Europe, Africa, and the Americas, with General Sources by : Loyd Lee
Download or read book World War II in Europe, Africa, and the Americas, with General Sources written by Loyd Lee and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-08-21 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broadly interdisciplinary work, this handbook discusses the best and most enduring literature related to the major topics and themes of World War II. Military historiography is treated in essays on the major theaters of military operations and the related themes of logistics and intelligence, while political and diplomatic history is covered in chapters on international relations, resistance movements, and collaboration. The volume analyzes themes of domestic history in essays on economic mobilization, the home fronts, and women in the military and civilian life. The book also covers the Holocaust. This handbook approaches each topic from a global viewpoint rather than focusing on individual national communities. Except for nonprint material, the literature, research, and sources surveyed are primarily those available in English. The volume is aimed at both experts on the war and the general academic community and will also be useful to students and serious laymen interested in the war.
