Book Synopsis Aid and Dependence by : Kathryn Morton
Download or read book Aid and Dependence written by Kathryn Morton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-29 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1975, in conjunction with the Overseas Development Institute, this study examines the case for and against aid for developing nations, taking the specific example of British aid to Malawi’s economic development since independence in 1964. Kathryn Morton suggests that without Britain’s aid, Malawi’s capacity to develop would have been severely undermined and that aid has not generally inhibited Malawi’s efforts to help itself. The rapid growth of both agricultural and industrial output alongside foreign exchange earnings and avoidance of large-scale urban unemployment and balance of payment problems do not bear out the critics' gloomy predictions. This book does much to counter the critics’ case against aid and raises a number of vital questions in determining the future shape of aid policies for both Britain and other developed countries.
Book Synopsis Economics of Education by : M. Blaug
Download or read book Economics of Education written by M. Blaug and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economics of Education: A Selected Annotated Bibliography is an annotated bibliography of the economics of education. The criterion of selection is a simple one: whether the country or area study contributes to fundamental generalization about the economic aspects or economic role of education. The literature on developed countries is distinguished from that dealing with the developing nations. Comprised of 12 chapters, this volume begins with a list of topics for developed countries, including the economics and politics of education; educational planning; manpower forecasting; and social mobility and reserves of talent. The same topics are addressed in the second part for developing countries. The bibliography covers topics ranging from the theory of economic growth and the role of education in social change to the problems of labor and management in economic growth; the role of education in social and economic development; the economics of public education; and the economics of human resources. This book will be of interest to economists and educators.

Book Synopsis The UK's foreign policy approach to Afghanistan and Pakistan by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Foreign Affairs Committee
Download or read book The UK's foreign policy approach to Afghanistan and Pakistan written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Foreign Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-03-02 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report the Foreign Affairs Committee calls on the British Government to use its influence to persuade the US to engage more fully, and swiftly, with the process of political reconciliation in Afghanistan if the US wishes to disengage its forces there. Although the current international emphasis favours intense military pressure, aimed at defeating the insurgency, it is clear that military pressure alone is not enough to bring security and stability to Afghanistan. The evidence presented to the Committee has suggested that the current full-scale and highly-intensive ISAF counter-insurgency campaign is not succeeding. The Committee question the fundamental assumption that success in Afghanistan can be 'bought' through a strategy of 'clear, hold and build'. The distinction between al-Qaeda and the Taliban is crucial to generating appropriate policy responses in Afghanistan. The Committee says that despite the significant resources that have been invested in Afghanistan, and the enduring, wholehearted and admirable commitment and sacrifices of British personnel, the UK has not yet achieved its stated goals. There is also evidence that the core foreign policy justification for the UK's continued presence in Afghanistan, namely that it is necessary in the interests of UK national security, may have been achieved some time ago, given the apparently limited strength of al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. The security rationale behind the UK Government's decision to announce the 2015 deadline for the unconditional withdrawal of UK combat forces remains unclear and there are a number of potential risks inherent in such an approach.
