Over the next few decades, his Gorkhali army establishes a mighty kingdom, the borders of which extend from Kangra in the west to the Teesta river in the east. The territory encompasses a large part of present-day Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and almost all of present-day Nepal and Sikkim. When they are eventually reined in by the mighty British army in 1815, it sparks off a new engagement between the imperial power and Nepal. Book excerpt: This is the story of the 6th Queen Elizabeth's Own Gurkha Rifles from the Regiment raising in 1817 as the Cuttack Legion in the service of the Honourable East India Company until it's amalgamation with the 2nd King Edward VII's Gurkha Rifles ( The Sirmoor Rifles) to form the First Battalion of The Royal Gurkha Rifles in 1994. In the course of its 177 years' existence the Regiment has had many changes of title, acquiring its present one in 1959 when it became 'Queen Elizabeths Own'. In the days of the empire when men of many different races and religions served under the British Crown it was probably the Gurkha soldier who most captured the imagination of the British people, partially on account of his outstanding courage in battle, and partially because of his loyalty and sheer good humour. Prior to Independence in 1947 the former Indian Army contained ten regiments of Gurkha Rifles, each of two battalions. In 1948 four of these, of which the 6th Gurkha's was one, were transferred to the British Army. The others remained in the Indian Army. During the First World War the 6th greatly distinguished themselves at Gallipoli, and later Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, Salonika and Afghanistan. In the Second World War the Regiment fought in all the main theatres except North-West Europe, particularly in Burma where the Third Battalion was awarded two Vcs in one battle when serving with Wingate's Chindits. After the war the Regiment played a prominent part in Malaya during the Emergency, and later in Borneo during the confrontation with Indonesia. As will be evident to the reader of this book, wherever they served the 6th lived up to the Gurkha philosophy that is is 'Better to doe then live a coward. The book also bears out the assertion that Field Marshal Viscount Slim, himself an officer of the 6th, that the Gurkha is 'the ideal infantryman'. Although it is sad that, owing to the reduction in strength of the British Army the 6th Gurkhas are being required to amalgamate with the equally distinguished 2nd Gurkhas, it is at least comforting that there will be Gurkhas serving in the Crown, as there have been since 1815. Long may they continue to do so, but no longer will the stirring cry 'Jai Sixth! (Go Sixth) be heard on the battlefield or sports ground. Royalties from sales of this book have been donated by the author to the 6th Gurkha's Benevolent Fund.

Book excerpt: Colonel Rupert Litherland's last published work was a highly regarded biography of Major General Bunny Burnett, and he has now returned to the fray with a biography of Major General Ronnie McAlister. Both men were 10th Gurkhas, both held the post of Major General Brigade of Gurkhas but were very different personalities. With Burnett what you saw was what you got: scruffy, laid back, extrovert, hail fellow well met, humorous, a smoker who enjoyed a drink, all of which did nothing to hide a great deal of common sense, tremendous professional competence and much operational experience that had won him an MC and a DSO. McAlister was much less of an extrovert, outwardly reserved, not at all showy, impeccably mannered, and a modest drinker but with a sharp and perceptive brain with the ability to reduce the most complicated situations to its basics that could be understood by all. In terms of authorship this biography was probably much more difficult to write than that of Burnett, if only because Ronnie McAlister was much more of a private person. Commissioned into the 3rd Gurkhas in 1942 and a temporary major three years later, he transferred to 10th Gurkhas when his own 3rd Gurkhas went to the army of the newly independent India. McAlister swiftly gained a reputation as a superb trainer and staff officer. Litherland traces this phase of his career in detail and shows how McAlister's reputation for being able to shine in any demanding staff appointment reduced his experience of operations. That may well be so, but as this book shows admirably, when 'Ronnie Mac' took command of 1/10th Gurkha Rifles that battalion achieved more in the course of the Borneo campaign than any other Gurkha battalion - and that bar was very high indeed.Of particular value, not just to the Brigade but to military historians generally, is the account of the events on the Hong Kong border in 1967 when McAlister was in command of 1/10 GR. Litherland has gone to great lengths to uncover previously unpublished sources and to interview leading participants, and he has produced what is certainly the most accurate account to date, and which is unlikely to be surpassed.As Litherland says, those of us who knew General Ronnie and had served under him would have liked to acknowledge his service and his friendship at a memorial service, but it is the measure of the man that when he knew he was dying, at the very respectable age of ninety-two, he insisted that there was to be no fuss and no memorial service.This is an excellent book which well captures the character of a fine officer and a man of great kindness and humility who even when achieving high rank never lost the human touch. According to the chairman of the British Gurkha Welfare Society, Major Tikendra Dal Dewan, these retrenchments were about to affect the Gurkha Brigade the most. During the past decades, the Brigade has repeatedly been faced with several problems of similar kind. The working conditions of the Gurkha soldiers have always been very poor compared to those of their fellow soldiers serving the British Army, which becomes most obvious when looking at the different incomes: a Gurkha soldier earns only around one third of the salary of a British soldier. Furthermore, their pension is by far not as high as the pension of those former soldiers being of British origin. Additionally, once retired, they were not allowed to stay in Great Britain with their families for a long time. Instead, they were sent back to Nepal. In the face of all the inequities and disadvantages the Gurkhas have been experiencing over the last decades, the question arises, why the British Army is still able to recruit Gurkha soldiers to such an extend? The name Gurkha, also Gorkha or Goorkha, is derived from the Nepali word ‘“Gorkhali”’. Gorkha, literally signifying ‘Defender of cows’, means a man of Mongolian ancestry, from the ancient princedom of Gorkha about fifty miles to the west of Kathmandu, whose King, Prithivi Narayan Shah, constituted the Gorkhali army. Surely, not all Nepalese soldiers had or have Gurkhali ancestors in their families. Nevertheless, the label ‘Gurka’ is uniquely used for all Nepalese soldiers who serve the British Army. Using a certain variety of spellings, the military still continues to label the ethnically diverse group of Nepali soldiers as Gurkha and by doing so manifests the term as a stereotypical designation that was obviously shaped by western imagination.
