Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brisbane and World War II is the Brisbane History Group’s twenty-fourth volume of papers. It comprises the majority of papers presented at the seminar, ‘Brisbane’s Second World War’ held on 27 August 2011. For continuity and thematic reasons, the volume is divided into three sections. The first focuses predominantly on the home front, the second on front line activity and the third on various ways in which the war is recorded and remembered. The first section considers: • the heightened activities on the Brisbane River during World War II • the operations of the Advanced Land Headquarters in and around the University of Queensland • the significance of indicator loop technology as a defensive strategy against submarines • the US construction of an ordnance storage facility on Mount Coot-tha • the upgrading and strategic importance of Fort Lytton • the military and civilian roles undertaken by women Section two examines: • the exploits of the US submarines based in Brisbane • the valiant and dogged defence of Tobruk by the 2/15th Battalion during the Easter Battle in 1941 • the trials, torments and triumphs of the men of the 61st Battalion who finally halted the advance of the Japanese army at the Battle of Milne Bay • the achievements of Kenneth Fraser, who was responsible for effectively organising the treatment of casualties from the Middle East campaigns Finally, the third section relates: • the story of the creation of a war memorial for the 2/9th Battalion and its two dramatis personae, a Czech sculptor and his subject, an Aussie digger • the struggle to obtain heritage listing for Eagle Farm’s Hangar 7, a significant World War II facility • the importance of researching the military archives of the US in order to gain a better understanding of Brisbane during World War II. Written by amateurs, professionals and academics, the book presents a fascinating insight into Brisbane’s contribution during and after the tumultuous years of World War II.

Book excerpt: As WWII ravages the world and the Japanese Empire has set its sights on Australia, the Americans have come to save us. But not all soldiers are heroes and not all heroes are soldiers. Sergeant Joe Washington, a US Military Police, loves music and photography but spends his days delving into the sordid and petty crimes committed by the thousands of American troops passing through town. While trying to find stolen gasoline stores, he is sent to investigate the body of an American soldier found dumped in a cemetery. Suddenly Joe is up against notorious detective Frank Bischof. Although ordered to leave the investigation alone, Joe fears that Bischof is protecting the most likely suspect while trying to pin the crime on an innocent – and intriguing – young woman, Rose. A woman who seems to walk between the parallel worlds of black market deals and Brisbane’s high society. ‘‘a rattling good murder mystery with a well worked plot that is fast paced and complex enough to engage the reader.’ Westender ‘Beautifully textured, thoughtful and satisfying.’ Emily Maguire

Book excerpt: The strategic significance of the Papuan Campaign can be briefly stated. In addition to blunting the Japanese thrust toward Australia and the transpacific line of communications, it put General MacArthur's forces in a favorable position to take the offensive. But this little known campaign is significant for still another reason. It was the battle test of a large hitherto-inexperienced U.S. Army force and its commanders under the conditions which were to attend much of the ground fighting in the Pacific. Costly in casualties and suffering, it taught lessons that the Army had to learn if it was to cope with the Japanese under conditions of tropical warfare. Samuel Milner holds a graduate degree in history from the University of Alberta and has done further graduate work in political science at the University of Minnesota. During World War II, he served in Australia and New Guinea as a historian with the Air Transport Command, Army Air Forces. Upon completing Victory in Papua he left the Office of the Chief of Military History to become historian of the Air Weather Service, U.S. Air Force.

Book excerpt: In November 1941, about 100 university students began their short-term compulsory military training with the 15th Infantry Battalion. Most were aged 19-22, had daytime jobs and were evening or external students from the arts, commerce and law faculties. They were ambitious, hard-working young men anxious to make their way in the world. Their compulsory military training was due to end on 4 February 1942 and the students would then be released to return to their jobs and continue their part-time studies. The outbreak of the Pacific War on 7 December changed everything. In April 1942, the 15th Battalion was given 24 hours' notice to move from Caloundra to Townsville. In January 1943 the Battalion went to New Guinea to take part in the Salamaua and Lae campaigns and did not return to Brisbane until July 1944. In November it was sent to fight in Bougainville. The Battalion finally returned home in January 1946 and most returned to resume their studies and jobs within the community. This book tells the story of those Queensland University students of `U' Company, 15th Battalion during its brief existence. It covers their wartime service in all its tragedy and triumph and how they resumed their lives, studies and careers once the war was over. Most regard themselves as being very fortunate - to have survived the war, to have learned to cope with adversity, to have learned the importance of getting on with life in spite of insurmountable obstacles and in having been able to make the most of opportunities that arose. They have been fortunate to find a life beyond adversity.
