Book excerpt: Bringing Up Father is an American comic strip created by cartoonist George McManus. Here the Fith series edited in 1921. New lay-out by Comic Books Restore. The strip centers on an immigrant Irishman named Jiggs, a former hod carrier who came into wealth in the United States by winning a million dollars in a sweepstakes. Now nouveau-riche, he still longs to revert to his former working class habits and lifestyle. His constant attempts to sneak out with his old gang of boisterous, rough-edged pals, eat corned beef and cabbage (known regionally as "Jiggs dinner"), and hang out at the local tavern were often thwarted by Maggie, his formidable, social-climbing (and rolling-pin wielding) harridan of a wife, their lovely young daughter Nora, and infrequently their lazy son Ethelbert, later known as Sonny. Also a character presented in the strip (portrayed as a miserly borrower) was named, fittingly, Titus Canby ("tight as can be").

Book excerpt: In 1912, William Randolph Hearst hired George McManus to start a comic strip about a guy named Jiggs - a working class man who came into a lot of money. With their new wealth, Maggie, Jiggs' wife, wants to enter the upper crust of society while Jiggs just wants to hang out with his old friends in his local bar. This became the classic strip Bringing Up Father', and is collected here in all its glory - much of which has not been reprinted in over 90 years.'

Discover the adventures of Jiggs and Maggie with the first edition dating from 1919 and restored by Comic Books Restore. Created by George McManus in 1913, Bringing Up Father tells the story of Irish-American Jiggs, a former bricklayer, and his wife Maggie, a former laundress, who suddenly achieve wealth and all the perks that come with it. While Jiggs continues to hang out with his old neighbourhood friends at Dinty Moorersquos Tavern, snobbish and pushy Maggie and their beautiful daughter, Nora, constantly try to elevate him, against his will, to his new social position. With a burlesque clash of wills as its premise, a cast of appealing characters and a fluid line drawing, Bringing Up Father has always been a remarkable comic strip and one of the longest-running in the history of comic book syndication. - Black and White - Format 8,5' x 8,5' - 48 pages - Glossy cover

Book excerpt: Self-initiation is killing our young men. Without strong mentors, boys are walking alone into a wilderness of conflicting messages about who they should be as men. It's no wonder that our sons are confused about what the world expects from them and what they should expect of themselves. The Intentional Father is the antidote. This concise book is filled with practical steps to help men raise sons of consequence--young men who know what they believe, know who they are, and will stand up against the negative cultural trends of our day. Jon Tyson lays out a clear path for fathers and sons that includes specific activities, rites of passage, and significant "marking moments" that can be customized to fit any family. It's not enough to hope our sons will become good men. We need them to be good at being men. This book shows how fathers, grandfathers, and other male mentors can lead the way.

She has failed to give him a son and her sharp intelligence and audacious will alienate his old friends and the noble families of England. When the discarded Katherine dies in exile from the court, Anne stands starkly exposed, the focus of gossip and malice. At a word from Henry, Thomas Cromwell is ready to bring her down. Over three terrifying weeks, Anne is ensnared in a web of conspiracy, while the demure Jane Seymour stands waiting her turn for the poisoned wedding ring. But Anne and her powerful family will not yield without a ferocious struggle. Hilary Mantel's Bring Up the Bodies follows the dramatic trial of the queen and her suitors for adultery and treason. To defeat the Boleyns, Cromwell must ally with his natural enemies, the papist aristocracy. What price will he pay for Anne's head? Bring Up the Bodies is one of The New York Times' 10 Best Books of 2012, one of Publishers Weekly's Top 10 Best Books of 2012 and one of The Washington Post's 10 Best Books of 2012

Book excerpt: The riveting follow-up to the New York Times bestselling The 5th Wave, hailed by Justin Cronin as “wildly entertaining.” How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity. Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race. Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate. Praise for The 5th Wave “Just read it.”—Entertainment Weekly “A modern sci-fi masterpiece.”—USA Today “Wildly entertaining . . . Book excerpt: The author of Why Men Are the Way They Are demolishes conventional wisdom about the nature of fatherhood and shows how the courts, media, and government create subtle, immensely powerful undercurrents that separate men from their children. Anyone who cares about the nature of fatherhood today, anyone interested in the legal and emotional issues that divide fathers from children, anyone viewing fatherhood from the perspective of a journalist, social worker, or lawmaker, and any single, married, or divorced parent needs to read this thoughtful and engaging book.Dr. Warren Farrell argues--with surprising and convincing evidence drawn from court cases, law-enforcement records, national statistics, and therapeutic case studies--that the judicial system, media, and government often make dads "the enemy." Fathers enjoy no parenting rights within the legal system and even in other, less typically confrontational arenas--such as the public education system--a wide range of unreported forces divide fathers from their children. For all its explosive conclusions, Father and Child Reunion ultimately calls for a rejoining of families and of children with parents who can care for them. Dr. Farrell has written what may be the most significant book on a vital issue facing men, parents, and families today.

Book excerpt: My father was the happiest man I ever knew. One of the reasons for this was his singing faith. To feel the significance of this, you need to understand that he was a fundamentalist. That's not a bad word in my vocabulary. And he's the reason. Fundamentals are worth dying for and fighting for. But that fight has killed the Song in the hearts of many people. But not in Bill Piper.
