Book Synopsis Revisiting New Netherland by : Joyce D. Goodfriend
Download or read book Revisiting New Netherland written by Joyce D. Goodfriend and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book offer a rich sampling of current scholarship on New Netherland and Dutch colonization in North America. The Introduction explains why the Dutch moment in American history has been overlooked or trivialized and calls attention to signs of the emergence of a new narrative of American beginnings that gives due weight to the imprint of Dutch settlement in America. The essays are organized around six major themes: New Netherland and Historical Memory, New Netherland in the Atlantic World, The Political Economy of New Netherland, New Netherland’s Directors: A New Look, Family Research as a key to New Netherland’s History, and Writing the History of New Netherland in the Twenty-first Century. This volume holds great interest for historians of early America and of Dutch colonization. Contributors include: Willem Frijhoff, Charles Th. Gehring, Joyce D. Goodfriend, Firth Haring Fabend, Jaap Jacobs, Wim Klooster, Harry Macy, Jr., Dennis J. Maika, Simon Middleton, Bertrand Van Ruymbeke, Annette Stott, David William Voorhees, and Richard Waldron.

Download or read book Beverwijck written by Janny Venema and published by Uitgeverij Verloren. This book was released on 2003 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the English conquered New Netherland in 1664, they found a well-established society that was firmly held together by a Dutch-modelled government and church, and which maintained continuous communication with its fatherland, the Dutch Republic. Combined sources from American and Dutch archives provide a lively picture of every-day life in this colony. Newly wealthy traders, craftsmen and other workers, and people who survived thanks to a well-organized system of poor relief are the main characters in this study of one of its major communities, Beverwijck on the upper Hudson (present-day Albany, New York). Beavers and shell beads that served as money, daily visits by Indians, and the presence of African slaves make clear that Beverwijck was not only Dutch, but a new, 'American' society, as well.
Book Synopsis David Gorlaeus (1591-1612) by : Christoph Lüthy
Download or read book David Gorlaeus (1591-1612) written by Christoph Lüthy and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When David Gorlaeus (1591-1612) passed away at 21 years of age, he left behind two highly innovative manuscripts. Once they were published, his work had a remarkable impact on the evolution of seventeenth-century thought. However, as his identity was unknown, divergent interpretations of their meaning quickly sprang up. Seventeenth-century readers understood him as an anti-Aristotelian thinker and as a precursor of Descartes. Twentieth-century historians depicted him as an atomist, natural scientist and even as a chemist. And yet, when Gorlaeus died, he was a beginning student in theology. His thought must in fact be placed at the intersection between philosophy, the nascent natural sciences, and theology. The aim of this book is to shed light on Gorlaeus’ family circumstances, his education at Franeker and Leiden, and on the virulent Arminian crisis which provided the context within which his work was written. It also attempts to define Gorlaeus’ place in the history of Dutch philosophy and to assess the influence that it exercised in the evolution of philosophy and science, and notably in early Cartesian circles. Christoph Lüthy is professor of the history of philosophy and science at Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
