The doctrine of original sin purports to provide a systematic, theological explanation of the Biblical data regarding the radical sinfulness of the human race. This entails the Biblical data as well as the study of many significant Christian thinkers and writers. The First Temptation explores the early attempts (1850-1900) of Seventh-day Adventist theologians to understand where this doctrine fit into their understanding of human salvation. Inheriting most of their theology from New England in the mid-1800s, these SDA theologians set about to correct what they considered was a perversion of Protestant thought. But in their pursuit, they found the doctrine becoming the victim of battles between New England and New Haven Theology. This book makes a profound contribution to the history of an idea central to the Christian faith. As the saying goes, If one does not understand the nature of the problem, one cannot comprehend the fixing of the problem. There is a difference between chronicle and history. Chronicle records what happened; history illuminates what happened. Chronicle provides information, history provides understanding. Historically, most Christians have believed that human nature consists of a material, mortal body and a spiritual, immortal soul. This belief, known as dualism, is largely derived from Greek philosophers who regarded the body as temporary and evil but the soul as eternal and good. Dualism has led Christians to envision a destiny where immortal souls survive the death of the body and spend eternity either in the bliss of paradise or in the torment of a fiery hell. During the Middle Ages the belief in the afterlife was promoted through literary and artistic representations of hell as a place of absolute terror where the damned writhe and scream forever, and of paradise as a beatific place where the saints bask in eternal glory. Eschatological theories and beliefs will be found in every culture where its thinkers struggle to make sense of their lives and history, and most particularly regarding what happens to them and their world after their lives come to an end. As a consequence, such beliefs or theories must necessarily be highly imaginative because they relate to a period beyond time. The very term ‘afterlife’ captures the frustrating ambiguity of the notion of eschatology for neither our language nor our conceptual skills can deal with an ‘end’ to time. This examination of Judaic eschatological thought is subdivided into seven topical chapters: The idea of an afterlife, the resurrection of the dead, the immortality of the soul, transmigration or reincarnation, modern religious ideas relating to resurrection and immortality, messianism, and divine reward and retribution after death.
