Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Sketch of the Zoroastrian Religion Customs: An Essay Written for the Rahnumai Mazdayasnan Sabha of Bombay The Chairman of the General Committee on the Religious Congresses of the World's Congress Auxiliary in connection with the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 at Chicago, having communicated with Mr. Dadabhai Navroji, M, P., of London, to advise him as to the best means of getting Zoroastrian Religion represented in the Congress, either by inducing some Zoroastrian scholar to visit the Exhibition personally as a Parsi delegate or, failing that, by procuring some essay on the Religion to be submitted to the Congress, Mr. Dadabhai advised and directed him to the Efihnumai Mazdayasnan Sabha, which had great pleasure in asking their Lecturer, Mr. Sheriarji Dadabhai Bharucha to prepare an appropriate paper to be read at the Congress. The Sabha could not have entrusted the task to a better man than Mr. Sheriarji, who, besides being an Athoman by birth, has devoted all his life exclusively to the study of the languages and principles of his Religion. Mr. Sheriarji has endeavoured his best within the short time at his command and has produced a work which the Sabha's Committee expects will be of permanent use not only to strangers to the Religion but to the Zoroastrians themselves. Book Synopsis The Experience of Hinduism by : Eleanor Zelliot
Download or read book The Experience of Hinduism written by Eleanor Zelliot and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1988-02-28 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents multi-faceted images of religious experience in the Marathi-speaking region of India. In addition to Irawati Karve's classic, "On the Road," about her pilgrimage to Pandharpur, there are three essays by Karve that appear in English for the first time. Here is possession by gods and ghosts, an actual sermon by an inspired saint in the traditional bhajan style, and an autobiographical account of the religious nationalism of the militant R.S.S. These are engaging, true-to-life accounts of the lives of individual Hindus. Essays and imaginative literature, a poem, and a short story interplay the ideas, concepts, personalities, practices, rituals, and deities of Hinduism in a surprisingly coherent manner.
